Most prospects want to know who else you do business with and how you got in touch with them. It is important to them that you are not just a cold calling or mass email operation.

They want to know that your service is highly appreciated and that sometimes sales opportunities come your way. Social proof is important.

Early adopters will not make up the majority of your customer base. Most of your customers will need to be convinced by others who have used your products successfully.

They want to know that you’re getting results for big-name brands. Leveraging social proof is all about helping your customer mitigate the perceived risk of adopting your solution.

A great way to minimize perceived risk is to tell them about the successes of other clients. A better way to mitigate your perceived risk is to let them know that your customers are so happy that they recommend you to other companies!

This strategy has two benefits:

• HAS) You’ve reached out to the prospect with a ton of social proof by talking about how big brands get you referral business.
• B) You’ve planted the seed that you’d like to reference them in the future.

Tell your prospect that you want a referral from them once your product starts getting results. It will get them excited for success and prepare them for your referral request in the future.

2: Offer Incentives to Prospects in Exchange for Referrals

Hopefully the company you work for has a well-structured referral program. That makes it easy to get referrals from your clients.

If you don’t have a formal referral process to take advantage of, you can create your own. Most sellers may offer different pricing options and discounts.

We rarely give discounts to customers who are on board right away. These are the customers who should receive the discount. They are usually sold early on and could become super users.

Offer them more incentives to buy, even if you think they would buy without the discount. Offer them a 5% price discount in exchange for a couple of referrals. A 5% discount might not matter in the grand pricing scheme, but it could help create a super user for years to come.

Offer your prospect an additional X% discount if you are willing to provide 2-3 (choose a solid number to make it look like a formal program) referrals who might be interested in using your product.

There’s a good chance that one of those 2-3 referrals will end up closing. You paid 5% of a current offer to get another new offer.

There is no limit to the number of times you can do this. If you close a referral, offer them a bonus so they give you another referral! See how long you can keep the streak going.

3: Ask for referrals when you’re closing

You may not be able to create your own referral program. It’s okay. There are other ways to get clients to give you referrals.

The best time to ask when you are closing a deal:

“Is there anyone else you know who could benefit from SuperProduct™ that I could contact?”

You may think the customer won’t give you a referral because they haven’t used the product yet. That is not always the case.
