Chocolate – Nestlé company history

In this article we are going to briefly review the history of one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world, Nestlé.

It was in the 1860s that Henri Nestlé, a pharmacist, developed a specific food for babies who could not breastfeed. He first used this successfully on a premature baby who could not tolerate his mother’s breast milk. This product saved the boy’s life and people soon began to see its value. Soon Farine Lactée Henri Nestlé was being sold throughout Europe.

In 1905 Nestlé merged with a condensed milk company. In the early 1900s they had factories in the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Spain. With the outbreak of the First World War, there was a great demand for these products. By the end of the war, Nestlé’s production more than doubled.

Unfortunately, after the war, the contracts ran out and the buying public went back to fresh milk. In response to this, Nestlé simplified its operation and reduced its debt. By the 1920s, the company had expanded its operations and chocolate was its number two selling product.

Then World War II broke out and Nestlé immediately felt the effects. Its profits fell from $20 million a year before 1938 to less than $6 million a year in 1939. Despite this, Nestlé began setting up factories in developing countries hoping for a turnaround at the end of the war. Ironically, the war was responsible for Nestlé introducing one of its most popular products, Nescafé instant coffee, which was the number one drink for the United States Army.

The end of World War II, as Nestlé predicted, was the beginning of a great period of growth for the company. Nestlé acquired many other companies during this time. In 1947 they merged with Maggi, Crosse & Blackwell in 1960, Libbys in 1971 and Stouffers in 1973.

In the mid-1970s, Nestlé’s growth in the developing world offset its slowdown in more developed countries like the United States. By the mid-1980s, they had acquired several additional companies, the largest of which was the American company Carnation.

After the mid-1990s, due to the breaking down of trade barriers, Nestlé enjoyed what was probably its highest growth ever. His acquisitions included the giant company Ralston Purina, which sells mainly pet food.

Despite Nestlé’s diversification, they are and always will be known primarily for their ever-popular chocolate bars and drinks, such as the Nestlé Crunch bar, which is now also converted into an ice cream bar, Nestlé Quick, which is a powdered milk chocolate flavored, Nestlé Carnation, another popular chocolate drink, Kit Kat Bar, Smarties, Nestlé Maxibon, Nestlé Extreme and a host of other products, a list that would take days to sift through.

In closing, it should be noted that much of Nestlé’s success was a stroke of good luck. It seems that a man named Daniel Peter figured out exactly how to combine milk and cocoa powder. The result was milk chocolate. Well, it turned out that Peter was a good friend of Henri Nestle’s. Peter founded the company, but it was eventually taken over by Nestlé as was destined to be.

Coaching Tools 101 – The Wheel of Life – 11 new and improved uses for the ultimate coaching tool

The Wheel of Life may be ‘old hat’ to us trainers, but it is a powerful visual training tool with many uses in the world of training. In fact, it may be the best and most flexible training tool in any trainer’s toolbox.

We forget that The Wheel of Life is still new to most of our customers. And even when they’ve encountered it before, it will tell them something new when they use it again, because like most training tools, it can only pick up on how someone is feeling at any given moment.

So, besides the common use of the wheel to see the balance of life, how else can we use The Wheel of Life to help our clients? Here are 11 new and improved uses for The Wheel of Life:

  1. Use The Wheel of Life to help your clients set meaningful goals. Areas with low scores are prime candidates for your clients to set bigger goals. Advice: This is an especially useful tool for business and career coaches/executives: to guide left-brained clients into ‘softer’ areas that improve their entire lives. Which of course will benefit their careers and businesses in the long run.
  2. Use a dig wheel to help your clients understand their lives and problems more deeply. Take one of the segments or categories and ask them to dig deeper by writing 8 areas that make up that segment for them. Advice: E.g. a ‘Finances’ wheel could include saving for a house or wedding, spending less/budgeting, saving for retirement, paying off credit cards, getting a better paying job, etc.
  3. Help your customers see how far they’ve come. Use The Wheel of Life monthly or quarterly with your clients, as a record to see how they are doing AND as a way for them to see how they have improved and grown. The improved scores demonstrate the concrete value of coaching and helping clients see their learning and progress. Advice: It’s a bit like looking back in an old journal and seeing how far you’ve come!
  4. De-stress your Clients! What about The Wheel of Stress from The Wheel of Frustration? Eliminate the usual ‘life balance’ categories and help your client to ‘think free’ through their problems. Ask them to label the top 8 areas that stress or frustrate them the most. Ask them to rate HOW stressful and frustrating each of their areas out of 10 is, and review the results with them. Advice: Ask, which area stresses them out the most? Are there surprises? How could they lower their scores?
  5. Help your customers get excited about life! How about The Wheel of Happiness, fun, or even excitement? Depending on what your customer needs/seeks, ask them to come up with 8 areas or things that are fun or excited/happy. Label the segments of the wheel accordingly and ask your customer for an action or commitment for each segment. What do they notice? How could you bring more of each segment into your lives? Advice: Help them find multiple wins, ie. areas where a stock increases its score in several areas?
  6. For Business Coaches, use the wheel to identify Sales and/or Marketing actions for your clients. Take a blank wheel and add the key areas your customers need to act on. Ask your customers to propose actions for each of you to complete in the next month. Advice: For example, a marketing conference could include the following; online social networks, SEO, article marketing, traditional networking, newsletter, fairs, advertising, seminars.
  7. Priority Management. What are your client’s top priorities? This could be at work, home, or life in general. Ask your client to label each segment and specifically identify their top 3 priorities. Then ask them to rate their satisfaction out of 10 for each area. Advice: What do they notice? Do they have their priorities “clear” or do they need to change their approach? What actions could they take to improve their scores?
  8. Understand what is TRULY important in life. Have your client list or brainstorm their priorities or goals; Asking him to list everything he wants to “Be, Do, and Have” in life is a great way to go. Now ask them to take each priority or goal and run through the ‘balancing’ categories of the Wheel of Life and ask themselves, “Will this improve my satisfaction in this area?” and for each area that is improved, that goal gets one point. Then, review which goals get the highest and lowest scores. What do they notice? What have they learned? This helps people see what will really make a difference in their lives rather than what they think will improve their lives. Advice: Suppose your customer wants to buy a Ferrari. Will it improve your finances? No. Will it improve your relationships with family and friends? Probably not. Will it improve your career? Unlikely. Will it enhance your fun? Yes. And so on until you get a score of maybe 2 out of 8. Now consider being a great dad. It may not improve your finances or career (although you never know), but it will help your family relationships, fun, health, personal growth, etc., which is why you might get a score of 6 out of 8.
  9. Identify skills gaps for promotions/new jobs/careers. Use a blank wheel and ask your client (or you can do it beforehand) to label the top 8 skills you’ll need to get the job or promotion you want. Now ask them to rate, out of 10, where they are at the moment in each of the skills. Finally, assign an action against each of the skill areas where they need to improve their skills. Advice: You could even ask them to identify an action for the areas in which they score high, “What could they do to really excel in that skill?”
  10. Help your clients identify what they are looking for in a relationship. This is called The Relationship Wheel. So, take a blank wheel and ask your client to label the segments with the 8 qualities an ideal partner would have. This MUST be done by the customer! And then ask them to rate how IMPORTANT out of 10 each quality is. This will help them figure out if being attractive or romantic is just as important as being trustworthy, having a good sense of humor, or being a good parent. Advice: You can even use the strategy outlined above in number 8, where you take each personal quality they’ve listed and assign you a point for each area of the Wheel of Life that you improve. What qualities will really make a difference in their lives?
  11. General Planning of Actions. Just use a blank wheel to help your client think of actions. Write the goal at the top of the page and then ask them to write the 8 actions or parts of work that make up their goal. Advice: Have them put a date on each one, and they can use the pie pieces to record the % Complete for each area until it’s complete!

Of course, you’re not limited to 8 segments, it’s just a useful number, and an easy one to split on the wheel! So feel free to use fewer segments or split segments for more.

And whatever we’ve used the wheel for, I like to ask this question when it’s complete: “So if this wheel represented your life/relationship/career/marketing strategy, is it a bumpy ride?”

I hope this has given you some new ideas on how you can work with and use ‘The Wheel of Life’ in your coaching practice. Try it, it’s very good!

17 fun Christmas decoration ideas to add sparkle to your home

It is the season to decorate your home in all the splendor of Christmas. Personally, I love decorating for the holidays… pulling out all those bins of forgotten decorations… discovering new items I’ve bought throughout the year… and falling into a deep nostalgia. Decorating for Christmas is almost as much fun as Christmas Day itself. It truly is a special time of year and making your home special will warm the hearts of your family and friends…and create wonderful memories.

I love decorating for Christmas, Christmas seems to have exploded in my house… but in a good way! 🙂

So… I have listed 17 ideas to decorate your home for the holidays. I hope you find at least one new idea for yourself… and maybe some will inspire you with a whole list of original ideas!

1. Light up your Christmas tree

It’s easy to put lights on your Christmas tree…but take tree lights very seriously at my house. My husband wraps each individual branch and branch with lights. Yes, it’s a bit tedious… but the result is impressive. Hey, you’re going to be looking at that tree all month… take the extra time and really make your tree shine… literally.

2. Decorate the railing of your stairs

This is a given, but it amazes me how few actually do it. Every time you see beautifully decorated homes in magazines, you see this grand staircase draped in garlands and lights. Is awesome. And it can have exactly the same effect in your home. It is easy! Wrap your handrails with garlands. You can go cheap and use the standard green garland on a box… or you can go all out and get a more realistic garland. Regardless of what your budget can handle…do what’s best for you. Now, wrap the garland with white lights. It doesn’t matter what kind of garland you use…because once those lights are on…wow! But don’t stop there! Tie a pretty bow of Christmas ribbon to the bottom and top of the handrails. And if you have enough tape, wrap the tape loosely around the rail. Don’t wrap the ribbon exactly like you wrapped the garland…offset it a bit. Now, you are really decorating!

And if you’re inspired… grab some sparkly Christmas ball decorations and hang them on your garland all the way up the stairs. Bet you didn’t know your house could look so luxurious!

3. Add Christmas bows

I add bows made of all kinds of Christmas ribbons all over my house. On the stair rail, on my wreaths…on the ends of my draped garland. On doorknobs. I attach them to my outdoor house lights. I add a big Christmas bow just below my angel on my Christmas tree. And for my second tree (yes, my second tree) I have a great 2-ribbon tree topper bow.

4. Hang wreaths in windows

It is common to hang wreaths on the front door. But I love hanging wreaths on my windows. I’m not talking about just on the outside of your house. I also mean inside. I don’t hang wreaths on all of my windows…I select a room that needs a little more Christmas spirit and hang one on each window. I also hang a wreath over the fireplace. And another on my book shelves. And guess what… I add ties to all of them.

5. Greet visitors with some fun

All formal decorating stuff is nice… but don’t forget to add some character and fun to your rooms. Especially in your house. Find something that makes you smile and put it where people will see it as soon as they walk into your house. I found this Christmas centerpiece that is made of holly leaves, berries, and 3 stacked gingers. It is adorable! It makes me smile and I put it on a table in my foyer. Now, I enjoy it when I get home… and others can enjoy it when they visit. It’s silly and I love it!

6. Create memories with small decorations

Growing up, I always remembered my mom’s little Christmas baubles. Like snow globes and funny snowmen. I didn’t really follow the tradition when I had my first children. But my mother gave me silly little items every year. And over the years, my children ask about some of these items when we decorate the house. I have a little igloo with snowmen that has a little light that makes a fire. My daughter remembered this from last year and she was so excited when she saw it. It’s the little things… literally… that can be the most special.

7. Decorate your mantelpiece

My mantelpiece varies from year to year. I have draped garlands and lights and hangs stockings. I have displayed a variety of different sized candles dressed in pine cones and garlands. I have shown framed photos of the family. Whatever you decide… just have fun. Experiment. Try different heights of a few different items. Try simple… try messy. Find your style.

8. Add garland

Like crowns, add garlands everywhere! I wrap garlands on the railings… I frame the doors. I hang fruit garlands over my French doors. I place a garland along the top back of my capes. I even wrap my columns in garlands.

10. Add some character to your front yard.

I used to do the “pretty” decorating in my front yard. White lights in the bushes. Garland and white lights around my door. And it IS nice. But now, I try to add a little fun. Not too much… I still don’t want my yard to look like I’m having a garage sale! This year I lined my front drive with light up candy canes. So beautiful! I still have my white lights on everything else… but it’s the candy canes that make me smile. And my kids love them!

11. Place wrapped gifts

Wrap the boxes in glossy paper… tie them with a ribbon… and place them around your house. What fun! I place wrapped gift boxes on my book shelves, some in a blank corner… some under the tree… anywhere you need to add a little holiday cheer. What an easy way to decorate!

12. candles

Ah, the soft flickering of candlelight can really add to the ambiance of a cozy home. I love the look of candles in the windows. Obviously, don’t use real candles for this. I also like to light a few candles around my house. The smell of cinnamon and holly is delicious.

13. Fill glass vases with blueberries and glitter.

Pull out those glass vases that just sit in your closet. Fill them with fake blueberries, clear glass rocks, salt, pine cones, and/or Christmas balls. Layer and be creative. And then leave these full vases outside. This is a professional decorator trick. It’s fast and it looks amazing!

14. Bowl of Ornaments

Take a large bowl and fill it with a few of your extra Christmas balls. Or collect a few unique ones that you personally love…and place them in your bowl. Place this bowl in the center of your coffee table or dining room table.

15. Photos of Christmas memories

Pull out some of those precious keepsakes from Christmases past and place them in some decorative frames. Shiny silver frames… frames painted red. Whatever you want. And place them around your house. You will find that you will begin to remember stories and share these moments with your friends and family.

16. Holiday Hand Towels and Bath Mats

Don’t forget the bathrooms! Add a cute hand towel and a Christmas doily. I have a box of fireplace tissues that I put on the back of the toilet in the hall bathroom. It just adds a little something.

17. Set your dining table

You may not be expecting dinner guests, but it’s always nice to have a table decorated and set. Bring out your favorite Christmas dishes. I have these fun white plates that have reindeer, Christmas trees, and Santas painted on them. I love them! Dress up your table with colorful placemats…place random baubles on the table…place a dramatic centerpiece…and light some votive candles.

As I write this article, I can already think of a few more Christmas decorating ideas. But I have to finish this list at some point. Decorating your home for the holidays can create many wonderful memories that you’ll relive each year you take out those containers. So go ahead! And happy holidays!

Oh…and don’t forget to hang bells on the doors…and mistletoe above the doors…okay, ok, I’ll stop!

It is much easier to lose belly fat with a diet than with exercise

Everyone wants a flat stomach, but what holds most of us back is the amount of work it takes to get one. Who wants to go through those painful exercise routines. Forget painful, who has the time? Well, for those of you who don’t get excited about hitting the gym every day, I have some good news for you. You can lose belly fat on a diet without that strenuous exercise.

To lose weight we need to create a caloric deficit. It’s much easier to create a calorie deficit by watching what we eat rather than trying to burn off our indulgences through exercise. Just 100 calories a day will equal 10 pounds in a year.

100 calories is nothing. We often eat 100 calories without even thinking about it. A slice of bread has 100 calories, two Oreo cookies or a Pop Tart have 100 calories. I’m willing to bet you mindlessly munch on 100+ calorie snacks, too. A Snickers bar has 270 calories. There are over 500 calories in a Big Mac.

To burn 100 calories you would need to run for 10 minutes, walk for 20 minutes, or lift weights for 20 minutes. Exercise is great, but personally I’d rather live without the vending machine than add extra minutes to my workouts.

Cut your daily calorie intake by 100 calories per day and you can lose 10 pounds in a year on that alone. Cut 200 calories a day and you’ve just cut 1400 calories that you don’t have to sweat every week. It is much easier to lose belly fat on a diet than it is to burn it off.

Don’t overdo it and try to starve yourself, but keep track of what you eat every day for a week. I’m willing to bet that just being aware of what goes into your mouth will cut at least 100 calories a day.

Basketball odds to bet: learn how to win consistently today!

Basketball is considered the most popular sport in the world. Not only is it fun, exciting, and fun to play, but it can also be financially rewarding. It is very common to hear about famous basketball players earning six figure salaries and there are many jobs available on basketball teams and basketball courts. However, you don’t need to be all of this just to make money in basketball. Even if you are just a fan watching from the sidelines or TV or listening to the radio, you can still make money by betting on the outcome of the games. By learning how to use basketball odds for betting, you can make money even while watching or listening in the comfort of your own home.

Knowing the basics of sports betting is highly recommended if you want to make good use of basketball odds for betting. This is because it includes a lot of technical terms and definitions that can be confusing and frustrating for anyone just starting to learn how to make use of the potential odds to bet on basketball. Other than that, you should learn about the different types of bets you can place, as well as the different rules in basketball betting. This can help a lot so that you can win the most amount possible or lose the least amount.

Once you know all the basics, you can start betting on any basketball game. A good way to increase basketball betting odds is to monitor the progress of all teams. You don’t visit every team just to do that. Instead, you can always go online and visit the websites of all the basketball teams. These sites are usually updated regularly and contain the latest news and status of the team and players, as well as all game times. If you can do this, there is a significant chance that the odds of betting incorrectly on any basketball game will be greatly reduced.

Apart from the websites of the different basketball leagues and teams, you can also try making use of the odds makers to increase the basketball odds to bet in your favor. These people are the ones who try to predict the outcome of the games based on the performance and state of the different basketball teams. They make use of numbers to indicate the estimated winning or losing percentage of the opposing teams. They can also provide valuable information about the possible outcome of the season. By learning to make use of the opinions of oddsmakers, the basketball odds for successful betting can really increase.

Making good use of basketball betting odds can really help a lot and should not be taken lightly by anyone planning to give it a try. Once you get the hang of it or practice it correctly, it can really make you win consistently even if you’re not playing the game that almost everyone loves.

How do I keep my flag football quarterback from throwing interceptions?

We received a recent question from a fellow youth soccer coach. He coaches the top level players at the 6-8 grade level and is having trouble with his quarterback turning the ball over via interception. The question is copied below as we received it, and our answer will follow below the question.

I’m the coach of a youth flag football team (ages 11-14)… our quarterback has a great arm, but he always finds a way to throw an interception. Are there any drills or tips that would help/prevent him from throwing so many interceptions? Our league ground rules state that the defense can rush our quarterback from 7 yards out, and we play without an offensive line.

Our first question would be, what kind of crime are you committing? All passing offenses need multiple options to be successful. That is the main reason why it is so difficult to have a passing game in youth soccer. You should run a schematic with hot reads (ie if there is a bombardment, the receiver follows a certain path, like a slope) and control receivers as a safety valve in case all the main receivers are covered.

You should have established routes as well as time routes. If the quarterback is throwing too many interceptions and there is no offensive line, then the problem is that the quarterback and receiver are not on the same page. Videotape your games and show both players the reads you want them to make based on how the defense is playing them. Perhaps your offense is not reading the coverage well. Some deep coverage of the man zone underneath can be difficult for young players to read correctly.

Check the tape and I’m sure you’ll be able to identify the problem.

My wife does not give me love, respect or sex, why?

Recently a man told me the following:

“I’m so frustrated! No matter what I do, my wife doesn’t give me love, respect, or sex.

I constantly do nice things for my wife. For example:

o I let her sleep every day

I clean the house non-stop

o I take care of the children (the roles are exchanged between my wife and me)

o I attend to her hands and feet trying to make her feel like a queen

o I try not to disappoint her in any way

o I tell her that she is beautiful several times a day

o I am always complimenting her on how smart she is

o I don’t get angry or insult her or say hurtful things to her

o I am very supportive and help her pay the bills

o I am currently going to college so I can start a new career and better support her and the kids financially.

The list can go on and on. I do all of these things and more, all out of love and because I want to. I do it for love and because I want to make her happy.

I’ve always had this strong belief that if you’re with someone, you should do everything you can to always keep them happy and I guess doing everything she asks is my way of trying to do just that: love and keep her. happy, and that’s my real reason.

But I figured since I do those nice things (because I want to), she should feel the same way, like a 50/50 kind of thing, and that’s what I DON’T get out of her.

You know, no one wants their efforts to go unnoticed and belittled. All I really want is the same love and respect FROM my wife that I GIVE her. Sex is just a bonus I crave — LOL!

So I hope now you can see why I’m so frustrated. After a while, it seems like they’re taking advantage of me and taking me for granted.”

This sad story is one I have heard countless times. And it’s understandable why husbands like this man are so frustrated.

After all, it stands to reason that when a husband is nice to his wife, she should be nice to him, right?

Well, it may be “logical”, but “logic” is NOT what drives a woman’s heart or desires.

Let me tell you the cold, hard truth…a woman can only GIVE her heart and desires…she can only GIVE her love, respect and sexuality…to a real MAN…one who LOOKS UP AND ADMIRED .

And, there are a thousand and more ways a man can think, behave, and operate in such a way as to make his wife NOT look up to him or admire him.

Of course, the husband can do all kinds of good things for his wife on the one hand. But on the other hand, he’s failing to operate in a way that makes his wife look up to him.

Consider yourself. In each of the roles, facets, and aspects of who you are, do you operate in a way that inspires your wife to look up to you and admire you?

Is your way of operating such that your wife can take you seriously? Can she take you as a man who is a serious contender in the game of life?

If someone privately asked your wife to name a few men she considers REAL MEN, would your name be on her list?

By way of example, many young husbands have considered themselves funny and entertaining, and in the meantime were completely ignorant of the fact that he was taking his wife away from himself. While he is doing all kinds of good things for his wife and while he is entertaining (thinks), HE is creating a reaction and a response in his wife in such a way that she will not return the love, respect, or support. sex.

The kind of man a woman can admire enough to give her heart and desire to is one who is never a fool or a fool. Sure, he knows how to have fun, be fun, and create fun, and at the same time, he’s adult enough…he’s mature enough…to have big, serious, meaningful things in his life. He is GUIDING her wife to a place of significance and importance…not leaving her all the way while he sits around clowning around.

Now this is just an example. Like I said, there are a thousand more examples that could be given of how men inadvertently reject their wife.

However, there is good news. When a wife is not interested in giving her husband love, respect, or sex, it simply means that the husband needs to learn some important lessons about masculinity and masculinity.

And, if he learns them early… before his wife gets tired of his rejecting her and finds another man… he can completely change his wife’s negative attitude toward him so that his wife WANTS to share his love. , respect and sex with him.

Games – American Heritage Games

In the early and mid 1960s, Milton Bradley came out with some interesting games, all marketed under the American Heritage game label. All of these were war based games and were very popular at the time. Unfortunately, they were left in obscurity and are now some of the rarest games out there, if you can even find one. Collectors are getting a mint for some of these.

The series began in 1961 with Civil War Edition. This game was a scaled down Civil War battle game. Each side had only 22 pieces consisting of 10 infantry, 10 cavalry, and 2 artillery. To combat an enemy piece, you had to line up your piece adjacent to it in some way, either side to side or facing the piece. Furthermore, in order to defeat the piece, you had to have superior battle strength. Infantry and Artillery had the highest strength of 2 and Calvary had a strength of only 1. You could combine your pieces in any way but to attack with Artillery you had to have a Calvary piece with it. To remove a piece you jump on it, except Artillery pieces don’t jump. The game was won by removing all the pieces on the other side. However, his opponent might give up if he felt there was no way for him to win.

The next game in the series was the 1962 edition of Broadside. This was a game that was likely based on the old wars between Great Britain and Spain during the days of the pirates, although no actual description of a timeline is given. The object of the game is to position your frigates in such a way that they fire on your opponents’ ships and shoot down one of their masts. There are also land cannons that can attack enemy ships, so getting too close to land can be very dangerous. The game itself isn’t very complicated and honestly not that interesting either, but it does contain some great miniatures you can play with and the board is very colourful. Not one of Milton Bradley’s best efforts.

In 1963 the American Heritage series continued with Dogfight. This was a WWI air battle game between the American and German air forces. The game is a very light version of WWI air combat and is not for really serious gamers. Each side receives 6 planes divided into 2 squadrons of 3 planes each. You have to try to maneuver your planes so that you can have a clear shot on an enemy plane without getting shot at yourself. For each plane you shoot down you get a token. These tokens are used to obtain cards. The player with the most cards at the end of the game is the winner.

The last game in the series was Hit The Beach. This game came out in 1965 and was a WWII edition of the landing of the marines on the Japanese beach. In this game, both players are American and the goal is to be the first to reach the Japanese HQ. The Japanese defense forces are obstacles for both players in this game. In this game, each player has 6 pieces consisting of 2 Marines, 2 Infantry, 1 Naval Landing Support Ship, and 1 Strategic Air Support Aircraft. If while moving your pieces you land directly on an opponent’s piece, you send that piece back to the start. Ultimately, this is how you become the first to reach the Japanese HQ. This was probably the most interesting and exciting of all the American Heritage games.

Daily Fantasy Hockey: A Whole New Game

While the NHL may take time to change, the world of fantasy hockey has been rapidly evolving. Just a few years ago, it seemed like their only option was a steakhouse-based league, which turned into head-to-heads, auction draws, etc. Recently, I started to get hooked on a new way to play fantasy hockey: Daily Leagues. While it’s not a replacement for the grind, planning, trash talk, and ultimate reward of a season-long league, it offers a great alternative with immediate benefit.

Here’s how it tends to work: You go head-to-head with an opponent, or a room of opponents, and draw up a salary-based roster for one night’s action. At the end of the day, the stats are added up and the winner takes all. That’s all. Instant gratification.

Several sites are popping up that offer Daily Fantasy games. Some are cap based, while others have an automated draft system which I don’t really like. (I don’t like having a computer make random decisions for me.) Fanduel, DraftZone, and FantasySportsLive are some of the more popular ones that have emerged in the last year or so.

Most of these sites offer a few different options for hockey, along with the NFL, NBA, and MLB; not that I care… It’s all hockey to me). Perhaps the best part of sites like Fanduel is that you can win money every night or play for free. When you sign up for a game, you choose what level you want to play and who you want to play against.

daily strategy

As daily fantasy hockey continues to grow in popularity, fantasy players will need to change their thinking a bit when it comes to strategy. With this format, you no longer need to worry about the details, like whether or not Marty Turco will lose his starting job in February. All that matters is that you know who starts tonight and who is likely to heat up.

The first strategy you need to master is to identify the value of the players. With a salary-based budget, it’s critical to identify players who are undervalued so you can free up cap space to spend on a guy like Malkin or Stamkos. In this format, defenders have little relative value, so it’s best to spend the absolute minimum possible at this position. To start the season, guys like John Carlsson and PK Subban were dirt cheap. Its price is starting to rise, so keep an eye out for new, cheaper options popping up. On the front end, some of the Flyer front end will deliver a lot of value for little cost. Guys like Leino, Giroux and Van Riemsdyk are currently underrated.

The lineups for most sites play with 1 goalie and 2 each in LW, RW, C, and D. When setting up your lineup, start in the goalie position. Remember, it is only for 1 night, so it is essential that you identify who starts. Several websites offer information on starting goalkeepers that is quite reliable. For the best information, go to that team’s local sources, as they will often post it on a blogger site, Twitter, or even on the team’s home page. If you can find value in this position, do so. Often times, NHL teams will start a backup against a weaker opponent. Backups tend to be lower in cost, so you can tell if you play nice. For example, in Fanduel, a top goalie like Miller or Luongo can cost 8K of your 55K cap. You can get an initial backup on a good rig for 3 or 4K, which obviously leaves room to add better options on offense.

Next, identify the 2 cheapest defensemen who have any hope of getting you points. In general, defensemen produce half as many points as forwards, so you’re wasting your money putting a mid to high-tier defenseman on your roster. One thing to watch out for on defense is penalty minutes. While D points are hard to predict, penalty minutes are more predictable.

After you fill out your crease and blue line, it’s time to spend your money where it matters most, on offense. Start from the bottom up and identify one or two players that you can tolerate at a lower price. Next, add a pair of spiked strikers to the mix. Finally, play the last spots with what you have left. Once you’ve completed your list, check how much cap space you have left. Take a look at your cheapest options one by one and see how much better you do with what’s left.

The future of daily fantasy sports

While it will never completely replace the traditional full-season fantasy leagues, daily leagues are growing in popularity and offer a completely different approach to the game. If you like the idea of playing for money, I recommend starting in one of the free leagues for a couple of games until you get used to it. You’ll find yourself looking at the out of town marker much more closely once you’re in the daily game.
