Are terrorists using arson to attack us?

Who is causing these terrible fires in California (summer 2016)? Occam’s razor would suggest that they are mentally troubled arsonists and a series of copycats with the same ‘love of fire’ or need to project themselves and cause harm to us all. However, what if it was an act of terrorism? After all, these terrible wildfires terrify us all. Every time we turn on the TV and watch people evacuate their homes in fear, wondering if they will still be there when they return, it makes us all think about our own vulnerabilities. What if international terrorists were starting these fires?

There was an interesting article in the UPI news updates titled; “New Fire Breaks Out at SoCal Wildfire Scene; 2 Roads Closed; Residents Flee Danger Zone – Authorities say the Blue Cut Fire started Tuesday morning and burned about 2,000 acres in about a hour”, by Doug G. Ware and Shawn Price posted on August 16, 2016 which read:

“A new fire tore its way across the pockmarked Southern California landscape Tuesday, shutting down parts of two major freeways and forcing mandatory evacuations in an area already extensively blackened by wildfires this year,” and “This fire is still out of control.” .”

Firefighters on television said the fire was unusually “explosive” and fast-growing. Hmm? And yes?

Are there arson terrorists using the dispersion of particle compounds as accelerants? The reason I’m asking is these current fires in Southern California are moving really fast and explosive, it’s not as hot, nor are the winds as strong as Santa Ana wind conditions. These fires are in areas bad for transportation, rail, power lines, gas lines, and highways, like cutting through southern CA. Something terrorists could do.

This type of arson weapon is thermobaric based and uses a large forest fire to help disperse a cloud of fine explosive particles or place those particles on the hillside. I hope not, but remember terrorists are not stupid and have read our reports on how to protect CA or how to deal with a “Red Dawn Scenario” in southern CA, there was a Popular Science article on this and the contingency plan of the Department of Defense. .

Of course, our DHS (Department of Homeland Security) is well aware of such challenges and does not take anything lightly – these arson investigators are taking all of this seriously as well. Protecting our civilization and our society from international terrorism is a truly difficult challenge. Please consider all this and think about it.

Prophetic Word to the United States of America and the West

I am the great one who died on a cross to save humanity from sin. I died to give man not only salvation but Power over sin and death. I am grieved in my heart to see the dominance that sin has over so many of My people.

This year I am calling My people to a walk that denies itself. I am calling my people to give. Not only to plant money in the Kingdom, but to give me time. I call My people to seek Me in the morning and throughout the day and again at night. I am calling on My people to deny themselves time in front of their computers and televisions and spend that time in communion with myself and with the Father.

Time is nearing the climax of all things. Time is getting shorter. This is not the time to invest in stocks and bonds. This is the time to invest in things that are in heaven. This is the time of plenty so that people can plant in good soil and promote My kingdom.

It is so difficult for My people to trust Me with finances. So few of My people give Me what is due Me. Lots of people spend more on entertainment each week than they do on My Kingdom. I cry real tears as people who might have known me die without the Gospel.

I am the God of freedom. I am the Lord of many people’s lives. These people who treat Me as Lord of their life, are given to Me, with their time. With his character, with his love for others and with his money.

I am looking for teachers, I am looking for preachers who will write My truth and share it with the world. I look for prophets who speak My word with faith and with boldness. I seek apostles to bring My Church back to a zeal that they had in the days of the Early Church.

Do you trust my reader?

Do you think I’ll talk to you if you listen?

Do you want to serve me with all your heart and with all your gifts?

Do you know less than 5% of the people in My Body, the church actually know and walk in their spiritual gifts that I have given them? Do you know that although my churches in the West think they are rich, they are poor and lukewarm?

Wake up my people!

learn to walk by faith

Learn to live with 90% of your income.

Learn to give to the poor and to give to those people who ask you for money.

Learn to obey me and turn the other cheek.

learn to forgive

Practice walking in My presence.

Begin to pray in faith, not for things that do not last, but for things that will make My Kingdom prosper.

Start planting in the third world. Sow the shepherds and apostles and prophets in the East. Send your money to the poorest nations in the world.

Start denying yourself and take up your cross. You know it’s true when I said that those who try to save their life will lose it. It is also true when I said that those who lose their lives for Me will save their lives.

I want my people to be known as self-sacrificing people who love others.

I want My people to give. Not because of the notion that they will return. I want you to sow in the third world and among the poor and underprivileged in your own cities and do it out of love for Me.

There is a real treasure in heaven. The people who live a life of self-sacrifice on earth, the people who carry the cross of Christ and suffer for Me on earth truly reap greater rewards in heaven.

The Christian life should be marked by love and self-denial, not by a life of prosperity that some people preach and make popular with people with itchy ears.

I come quickly and I will judge. Before the Great Day of the Lord there will be much suffering on earth, but as a just judge I will protect those who have been serving Me.

Economically difficult times are ahead for the world. You will not always have prosperity. A dark time is coming and in those times people who live by faith will be strengthened.

The world is dark now. My light is not as strong and My people are sick and go to doctors and live independent lives, not lives that really need my support.

In the East they do not have money for doctors and medicines and sometimes the prayer of faith is all they have to recover and My anointing heals them. In the West, however, you have a pill for everything and you will look for a painkiller before asking me to take away your headache.

I am a God who knows your heart. I know those who honor Me with their lips and whose hearts are far from Me. When the times of judgment fall on the earth, very soon the tares and the wheat will separate. I will take the tares and throw them into the fire.

I know all the true doctrine in the world. I am aware of every truth in every church and every false doctrine. I can tell you that a lot of error is being preached and that false teachers are alive and making a lot of money in the ministry today all over the world.

These false teachers have million dollar homes and they have My anointing to heal and they can cast out demons, but their hearts have strayed from Me and their God is their belly and their way of life.

I can save millions of people through a teacher whose heart has turned away from Me, isn’t that My right? Doesn’t My Word still have the power to save? Shouldn’t My anointing still have the power to heal the sick and cast out demons and do all kinds of signs and wonders?

Of course. I could give names. I could tell you men of God here and now that if you continue in your unrepentant lifestyle, you will not inherit eternal life. They will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

This is the people who will tell me on that day. “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy and cast out demons and do many signs and wonders in your name?” And I will tell them, depart from Me, you who do iniquity.

Don’t you see people? When you are sinning and you don’t repent of your sin, how can I forgive you? If some false teacher has taught you to sin and made your lifestyle of idolatry of money and wealth acceptable to you and you continue in that way with money as your teacher, both you and your teacher will go to hell.

Let me be frank here and repeat myself.

You can only serve one master. You cannot serve money and God.

Do you think it is easy for the rich to inherit eternal life?

How many camels have you seen go through the eye of a needle?

My apostles wondered how a rich man could get into heaven. I told them it was possible with God.

But a rich man who was in love with God and not with his money would be giving me too much of his money. He would be giving more than 20% of his weekly income.

You see when I become important in your life and you really have my heart for your neighbor, you want to use your money for My kingdom.

You won’t be sending your money to a prosperity preacher who already has millions of dollars’ worth of homes and fancy cars. You would be sending a hundred dollars to a pastor in India so he can buy a bicycle and preach to more people in his week. You will not be sending your money to a Christian TV station that only Christians watch, you will be supporting an evangelist in Africa who is saving millions of Africans.

Reinhardt Bonkke is quoted as saying, “I’d rather be a millionaire in souls than in money.” Now that’s a guy who won’t waste his money on his material wealth. Why do I insist so much on money?

Because you can only have one Master!

If your Master is Me, you will do what I tell you. I said that whoever wants to follow me, he must deny himself and take up his cross every day.

Do you deny yourself something because of the gospel?

Really?

Even you people who faithfully entitle 10% of your income are really denying yourself as much as you could?

The world needs to be saved. I have people in every country working faithfully for Me. Mateo meets an apostle who needs to build more than a hundred churches. He already has congregations of up to a hundred people for churches but he has no money to build them. He is in India. A man I raised up who has planted 300 churches in the poor villages of India.

I have hundreds of men like him in India. Hundreds of people who need money like him. Not money to live, but money to do my job. Money that will not be wasted on salaries but will be used to build houses of worship.

Some people don’t consider that I have emotions. Some in the West would think that I am a happy Jesus sitting here in heaven with all the poverty and sickness in the world and all the people going to hell every day. Some people cannot imagine that My Father and I cry for the people of the world. As I intercede for certain people, I cry in front of My Father.

If I told you to look for one thing this year, I would tell you to look for my presence. Seek to walk in the Spirit and know my permanent presence. Life in the world is going to become more and more difficult. More and more false teachers rise up in this hour and the world and the churches sing peace, peace, when there is no peace.

I implore you to give to the poor. I implore you to reach out to the brokenhearted. I’ve said it once, but I’ll say it again. When you have a party and invite your friends for dinner, go find some poor bum who can’t pay you back and bring him to your party and you will be rewarded in heaven.

You can live in My peace on earth. You can live in my will. You can live on 80% of your income. You can make a difference in the world. You can discover your spiritual gift this year and walk in it. You can make the world a better place. You can afford to support a pastor and buy him a bike. You can support a third world church. You can do anything in My name.

I’d rather you be an atheist and dead against Me than be a lukewarm Christian who’s not hot for Me. I’d rather you don’t even know My name than reject a beggar who can see My light on your face and bring my name into dispute. I would rather the church have fewer Word teachers and more prayer warriors.

Im begging you. Give me your time. Give me your obedience. Give my people in the East, My money. Because if I am your God, you should serve me with all your heart, mind, and strength.

This year I will be raising up many people who are called to the full time ministry. Many of these have not gone to college and are only trained by My Holy Spirit. These people will have gems of knowledge and wisdom, secrets that I gave them. Secrets like the one I gave you about who are the people who will say Lord. Lord to me on Judgment Day.

Be at peace.

I love Jesus

Leyland Cypress Vs Thuja Green Giant for Privacy Screens

Leyland Cypress and Thuja Green Giant are the most popular privacy screen trees because they are the two fastest growing evergreens, are inexpensive compared to other evergreens, and also do not shed as many needles as pines do. The fast growing attribute translates to a less expensive purchase price. You’ll likely pay less for a 12-foot Leyland cypress or Thuja green giant than you would for a Norway spruce since they don’t need to be cared for as long. Both varieties can grow three feet per year if properly fertilized.

One of the advantages of Thuja Green Giant trees is deer resistance. While deer don’t eat Thuja Green Giant, they don’t really like Leyland Cypress either. Everywhere we grow Leylands we also grow Green Giants, deer are very plentiful and never eat any of them. There are forests and fields nearby, it is urban deer with no other food that eat these trees. They usually only damage smaller trees anyway, 6ft tall and smaller. Another advantage of Thuja Green Giant over Leyland Cypress is that Green Giants are cold hardy through hardiness zone 5, which includes mainland New York, Maine, northern CT, Mass, etc. Leylands is safe through hardiness zone 6, all of Long Island, southern Mass, CT, etc.

There are many websites available where you can enter your zip code and find your hardiness zone. If you see Leylands growing in your area, that’s obviously the answer that they’re doing well in your area. One piece of advice is that if you are at the northern end of the growing range of any evergreen tree, it is most important that you plant in the spring because the first winter you should find them partially established or rooted. We recommend if you are in Northern Virginia, not to plant Leyland cypress trees after October 15. Almost every year we send a load or two after that date to Long Island and they have good success, but they don’t get planted until November and you can also expect some wind on Leyland cypress trees planted in late fall. Usually this isn’t a big problem, the following spring I like to trim back the outer 2″ if that’s what has browned, apply slow release fertilizer around April 1st, and they’ll put out new growth and be fine. Winter burn is not vegetation that froze and turned brown, it is because the tree was unable to send up enough moisture to support the vegetation during the winter when the ground was frozen, leaving the outer edge of the vegetation brown .

I disagree with the opinion that some have that Thuja Green Giant is much less susceptible to insects and disease. Where I have Leylands and Green Giants growing next to each other, I see that Bagworms are attracted to both trees. It is true that Leyland cypress can develop a disease called Seiridium Canker, which does not seem to attack Thuja Green Giant, whenever I have heard of Seiridium Canker it only attacked extremely stressed Leyland cypress trees, for example by planting close together and not placing them at the recommended height according to the space. Since Bagworms can be attacked by both varieties, and Leyland Cypress diseases attack trees under extreme stress conditions, my opinion is that if Leyland Cypress is planted correctly, with normal post planting care, they are both trees. privacy screens are excellent if you are in zone 6, where both thrive.

WDW History 101 – "How to buy 27,000 acres of land and no one notices"

Thinking of walking from the Magic Kingdom to Epcot? Think again!

People, especially those who haven’t been to Walt Disney World in many years, always tell me how huge WDW really is. In reality, most people don’t realize how much land WDW actually covers. In fact, it’s about 80 times the size of the entire nation of Monaco, twice the size of Manhattan, and the same size as San Francisco, California! So when you say WDW is huge, you’re not kidding!

The Walt Disney World Resort is made up of 47 square miles of land… or about 30,000 acres. Only about 1100 acres of that land is dedicated to the 4 theme parks. In fact, with only 7,100 developed acres, there’s plenty of room for expansion!

But how (and why) did Disney buy all that land?

In the early 1950s, Anaheim, the home of Disneyland, was a sleepy little town, surrounded by nothing but acres and acres of orange groves. Walt Disney originally wanted his new 8-acre theme park to be built near his Burbank studios, but he soon realized that such a small space wouldn’t cut it. So, he bought more than 160 acres of orange and walnut groves in Anaheim near the junction of the Santa Ana Freeway and Harbor Boulevard, and built his “Magic Kingdom” within its borders (while moving 15 existing homes in the process). Today, Disneyland encompasses less than 300 acres, which includes Disney’s California Adventure and additional hotel properties. Relatively speaking, all of Disneyland could fit inside Epcot.

Unfortunately, Walt Disney did not buy enough land around Disneyland, and soon after the park opened it was surrounded by tacky hotels, tourist gift shops, and restaurants. His dream of a fully contained theme park for families was now tainted with views of billboards and fast food restaurants. Walt promised that if he ever built another theme park, he wouldn’t make the same mistake twice. He would be sure that they could control the surroundings, which would include campsites and first-class facilities for recreation and lodging.

In the early 1960s, Walt and a team of Imagineers, including his brother Roy and General Joe Potter (can you find his name anywhere in Walt Disney World?) embarked on a super-secret effort, known simply as “Project X” (later known as “Project Florida”) to scour the nation for a new location for a second theme park. First of all, they were looking for a lot of land… cheap! Second, they wanted it to be close to a major city, with good weather and excellent roads and infrastructure. Reportedly, when Walt’s plane crossed the intersection of I-4 and Route 192 in Florida, he knew that he had found his place.

But how is Walt Disney going to buy thousands of acres of land without the landlords holding out for exorbitant prices? he doesn’t Something like. Walt Disney created dozens of “dummy” corporations, with names like “MT Lott” (get it? Empty Lot?), the “Latin American Managers and Development Corporation,” and the “Reedy Creek Ranch Corporation” to buy up parcels ostensibly worthless. of land ranging from swamps to cattle pastures. By May 1965, there had been major land purchases in Osceola and Orange counties (just southwest of Orlando), though no one realized (or suspected at first) that Disney had anything to do with it. One of the first purchases included 8,500 acres owned by Florida State Senator Irlo Bronson.

In late June of that same year, the Orlando Sentinel reported in an article that more than 27,000 acres had recently changed hands. Speculation began that large corporations like Ford, McDonnell-Douglas, Hughes Aircraft, and Boeing (since the Kennedy Space Center was located nearby), as, yes, even Walt Disney. However, in October, Orlando Sentinel reporter Emily Bavar, confirming her suspicions after several negative responses from Disney employees, broke the story that it was Walt Disney who had secretly been behind the purchases of all these lands. . Of course, once it was revealed that Disney was behind the purchases, land prices went up over 1000%! That is partly why Walt bought his first acre of land in Florida for Walt Disney World for $80.00 and his last for $80,000.00!

Disney quickly scheduled a press conference and confirmed the story. With the governor of the state of Florida and his brother Roy at his side, Walt described the $000 million project that would become Walt Disney World. In exchange for providing such a boost to the area’s economy, the creation of thousands of jobs, and improvements to the environment and infrastructure of central Florida, Disney received permission to establish its own home rule, known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District. This quasi-government gave Disney the ability to create its own building codes, do its own zoning and planning of roads and bridges, and create its own residential community, among other advantages.

When Walt Disney purchased the 47 square miles that would become the Walt Disney World Resort as we know it today, it was nothing more than a desolate swamp, scrub forests, and groves of trees. To transform this area into the world’s number one vacation destination, vast amounts of Earth had to be moved. Also, since much of central Florida is essentially “floating” on a body of water, it presented a daunting challenge. Disney had to transform this land, while balancing the needs of the environment and the ecology of the area. If any part of the water supply were to be damaged or removed, it would have caused a massive ecological imbalance in the region.

The first thing Disney did was set aside a 7,500-acre Conservation Area in 1970, which would never be built on. This would preserve the cypress trees and provide land for the natural inhabitants of the area. Second, they developed an engineering marvel by creating a system of more than 55 miles of canals and levees to control water levels. Disney Imagineer John Hench designed this network of canals to blend in with the natural landscape, rather than being built in straight lines. The mechanism that controls the water levels is fully automated and requires no monitoring and little maintenance. Pretty impressive, considering the property is roughly twice the size of Manhattan!

Currently, the two municipalities of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista are home to Walt Disney World. These two cities are run by Disney employees who live on the property in a small “backstage” group of houses. Although the permanent residential population of these cities is very small (2003 population 20), it is home to millions of families who, for a brief period, call Bay Lake “home.”

Over the years, Disney purchased an additional 3,000 acres, bringing the total size of the Walt Disney World Resort to more than 30,000 acres. Less than a year after the formal public announcement that it was, in fact, the Disney Company that had purchased all of this land near the intersections of major highways US 192 and Interstate 4, he declared, “Here in Florida, we have something special. that I never enjoyed at Disneyland… the blessing of size. There’s enough land here to accommodate all the ideas and plans we can imagine.” With only about 1/4 of the entire property being developed, it seems he was right.

Boutique hotels on the rise

Traveling has always been one of the most important parts of our lives and with this in mind, the hotel industry has changed the whole concept of a hotel very quickly in recent years. Now hotels are no longer a place where you go because you don’t have immediate accommodation in that city, but these hotels have become more than just a place to stay. These hotels now provide many other integrated services and luxuries like restaurants, swimming pools, gyms, spas and many others.

Over the past decade, the rise of boutique hotels has made a huge impression on the hospitality industry and is still doing so. These boutique hotels now operate in every city big or small, be it New York, London, San Francisco or anywhere in the world. This concept of boutique hotels has basically been around since the 1980s. Initially, these boutique hotels were also known as “designer” or “lifestyle” hotels. The Morgan Hotel in New York was the first to earn this “boutique hotel” label. Nowadays, everyone tries to call their hotel a boutique hotel, but generally, a boutique hotel is one that is comparatively smaller and built for the purpose of serving its personal customers rather than others. The definition of a boutique hotel according to most travel and tour agents and such websites is, it is a hotel that has no more than 50 rooms and the goal of this hotel is to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The explosion in the number of boutique hotels has led to confusion as more and more in-house hotel owners are opening their own chain of boutique hotels. The most famous are the Starwood and resort hotels.

After the huge popularity of the New York Morgan Hotel, many boutique hotels have sprung up around the world, especially in or around cities that are hotspots in terms of tourism. Let’s take London as an example. Until some time ago, it was very difficult to find a boutique hotel there, but now you see boutique hotels on every street, and moreover, the bigger hotels are also becoming a boutique hotel. These large boutique hotels are gaining more popularity there as rents are high and small boutique hotels are not operating often. In the last five years, many boutique hotels have gained great popularity in London and some of them are Guest Houses in Notting Hill, Baglioni Hotel and Soho Hotel in Soho.

In our second example, Paris, each type of boutique hotel can promise you great success. This is probably the reason why there are such a wide variety and number of boutique hotels to choose from. One of the oldest boutique hotels in Paris is called Montalembert and is located on the Left Bank. The hotels that have been induced as a boutique hotel recently are the Hotel De Sers located on Avenue Pierre and the Hotel Sezz located very close to the Eiffel Tower.

The interesting fact about boutique hotels is that North American boutique hotels are slightly larger than worldwide boutique hotels and this is because rents are higher there. But still boutique hotels are very famous in America.

It is estimated that as the tourism sector grows, the hotel industry, especially the boutique hotel industry, will also grow and also the fact that large hoteliers have started their expression of interest in boutique hotels, will help this industry to flourish. for many years.

Vanuatu has many things to do that make it a vacation paradise in the South Pacific

Vanuatu is a beautiful collection of lush green islands located in the Pacific off the coast of Australia and New Zealand. Bordering the islands are white sand beaches and crystal clear waters that contain the most diverse marine life in the Pacific. Of all the things to see and do in Vanuatu, there is none more exciting than the Yasa Volcano tour on the southern island of Tanna. This is the only place in the world where you are allowed to stand on the edge of an active volcano. At night, the sight of the fireballs shot from the volcano is incredible. you could be forgiven for thinking you were on another planet.

The nightlife in Port Vila, one of the three main islands of the Vanuatu archipelago, is very lively, especially on Melanesian party nights. On Melanesian festival nights, traditional dance and good food are the centers of the party. Local string bands play music that will have you in a blissful trance as kava, a local drink, fills your stomach. The kava is not intoxicating, but don’t take more than 4 shells (50 vatu) if you’re not used to it, and allow 15 minutes between each.

There is also a lot to do during the day. Due to its marine diversity and crystal clear waters, Vanuatu offers one of the best fishing experiences you will ever have. The Easter challenge fishing competition takes place on Easter, so if you’re ever there at that time, make sure you enter as it’s a lot of fun. The island also offers many other fun and relaxing activities, such as deep-sea diving to view shipwrecks, snorkeling the coral reefs, swimming with dolphins, and horseback riding along the beautiful white sand beaches.

If you don’t like the sea, you can take several tours across the island by bus, helicopter, buggy or by your own means; You can even stop at a waterfall and enjoy a nice swim in the cool, pristine river water or sunbathe in the flowing water below the waterfall itself. The resorts in Vanuatu also have several beautiful golf courses for those of us who fancy a good swing.

The months of June to September are when the people of the island really come alive, as it is the festival season. If you happen to be there at this time of year, you definitely don’t want to miss the Rom Dance, which is a two-day community festival that follows an age-old traditional dance called the Rom. The Rom is a mysterious performance that happens hidden behind a cloak and fueled by rhythmic music played by a Tam-Tam, the largest foot instrument in the world. Other festivals worth attending include the Nagol or land diving festival from April to June, the Fanla Arts Festival, the Pankumo Circumcision Festival (the ancestral rite of passage from boys to men ) in August and the Maewo Special Cultural Festival in September.

Vanuatu is a beautiful island that offers you a luxury resort getaway fused with local traditions. A trip here would be like no other I’ve had or will take again, unless I return.

Hello from Calgary – a delicious dinner at Il Giardino

After taking a lovely and much-needed break at the historic Twin Gables Bed and Breakfast, we headed out to explore the immediate neighborhood, the restaurant area on 4th Street. We were going for a walk, but considering that I had been really sick with an unbelievable chest cold for the past few days, venturing out into the cold night air had me a little leery. Henry from Twin Gables was very kind to offer to drive us a few blocks to a restaurant called Il Giardino, one of the places that had been highly recommended for this area by Tourism Calgary.

We entered a Mediterranean-looking restaurant that was packed with people. We sat at a cozy table and had the opportunity to spend some time with the owner, Mike Ciccaglione, and his restaurant manager, Dorothy, to learn more about this establishment. Everywhere I go I try to get the human stories, and boy was I in for an interesting one here. Little did I realize that I had connected with one of Calgary’s most successful entrepreneurs, a true immigrant success story.

Mike was born in the Molise region of Italy and left Italy at the age of 16 to study business administration and hotel and restaurant management in Switzerland. He arrived in Canada in 1962, after which he worked in a variety of hotels and restaurants in Calgary and Banff. He also studied English as a second language. In 1967 he opened his first restaurant called the Prairie Dog Inn, which initially specialized in Mexican food.

As if that wasn’t enough, Mike opened the Mexican Village chain of fast food restaurants in various strip malls and in 1980 he opened the “Pied Pickle” chain.

Logically, he decided to expand his business to include the supply and distribution of tortillas and other Mexican foods: El Molino food manufacturing was born. This company manufactures Mexican food products, as well as Italian pizza and pasta dishes, and distributes its products to warehouses in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Montreal.

In 1998 Mike opened “Il Giardino” (the ultimate in Italian food and fun), a restaurant where all the dishes were homemade, it had always been his big dream.

When we walked into this restaurant, I had no idea that we would meet such a successful Canadian businessman. At the same time, you would never know it: Mike walks around in casual clothes, laughs and smiles a lot, and always keeps his eyes open to check on the guests’ enjoyment of him. During our conversation, he got up several times to greet or say goodbye to guests, and Dorothy referred to him as a “big flirt.” It’s clearly obvious that, even at 65 years of age, Mike loves what he makes of him and Dorothy told us that he makes the rounds daily at his various Calgary businesses. Mike is one of those people who loves his work and always has a twinkle in his eye.

Dorothy has an interesting story: she is originally from Montreal and her husband, an engineer in the oil industry, hails from England. Before Calgary, they lived in Montreal, St. John’s/Newfoundland, as well as Jakarta, where they ended up as refugees in Singapore for a month during President Suharto’s coup. They have now settled into a quieter life in Calgary.

Mike attributes his success to a strong commitment to quality ingredients and preparation, crediting much of his fortune to the strong support of his wife Lucy, daughter Judy, and son Michael Jr. and hopes that one day their children will become position. He also recognizes the importance of his employees as a critical success factor. He told us that he feels it is very important to reward his employees and that many of the employees at Il Giardino Restaurant have been there for over 10 years. A young couple, the night manager and hostess, have 15 years of service (5 years at Il Giardino and 10 years at Pied Pickel) between them and Dorothy confirmed that people really enjoy working here. Mike says “You’re nobody until people make you somebody”, which is why he treats his employees well and appreciates his winning team.

The construction of Il Giardino is a story in itself: Mike designed the restaurant and one of his old friends, Walter Petrin, did all the masonry work, while his other great friend Vic Finot was the general contractor. Every Friday, he and these two special friends come together to solve the world’s problems. Oddly enough, the next day the problems start again.

Outside of work, Mike loves spending time with friends, some of whom he has known for 40 years. His family is very supportive and his wife spends a lot of her time doing charity work. Mike also supports the United Way and various fundraisers for breast cancer and Calgary Children’s Hospital.

He still returns to Italy from time to time, although he says he has seen almost everything in his home country. So now he is thinking of traveling to places like Asia, Africa and Latin America as long as it is safe and reasonably clean. Mike loves soccer and even used to own a local soccer team called El Molinos Dinos. Another of Mike’s great passions is his Ferrari and he said that from time to time he puts it up for sale just to see the interest from potential buyers. But when it comes down to it, he really has no intention of selling it.

But that’s not all: Mike is also a movie star! He has had roles in “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” as well as “Cool Runnings.” It seems like Mike is always up to something, and when you listen to his list of efforts, it seems incredible that one person could do all of this.

Mike embodies hospitality and while we were there he insisted that we get a real taste of what his kitchen is capable of. For starters we tried Il Giardino’s soups – I tried a Stracchiatelle Egg Drop soup while my husband ordered the “Brodo con Polpettine e Pasta” (chicken broth with small meatballs and pasta). I then got to try Il Giardino’s famous calamari (extremely tasty and tender) while Nigel munched on his Bruschetta bread. We also received a sampler plate of appetizers – Antipasto Italiano (ham with melon).

That wasn’t all: we also tried Il Giardino’s homemade Gnocchi della Nonna which, by the way, is made in-house by Mike’s 70-year-old sister. Then, we couldn’t believe it, the main course arrived: a tasting plate of three of Il Giardino’s specialties: Pollo ai Funghi (chicken breast in white wine sauce topped with mushrooms), Piccata al Limone (veal with lemon and white wine sauce) and Agnello al Rosmarino (lamb in rosemary, mint and red wine sauce). I’m usually not a big meat eater but these dishes were terrific, the meat was tender, the sauces very flavorful without being overpowering. Mike capped off a fabulous meal with a tasting of the most famous Italian dessert: tira misu.

Without exaggeration, our dining experience at Il Giardino ranks as one of the best restaurant experiences of my life, the food was delicious. I love Italian food, and the people at Il Giardino certainly know how to prepare Italian delights. We had to bring a doggy bag to our bed and breakfast, there was no way we were going to eat all this delicious food. There is no doubt that Il Giardino serves excellent freshly made food. And more so, it was a pleasure to meet the creator behind this welcoming neighborhood institution.
