Stubborn Yorkie? Tips for training a yorkie

Let’s face it, if you have a yorkie, you’ve faced their stubborn many times over and over again. The Yorkshire Terrier can get quite challenging when you try to work with him in training. I recently discovered a few things that I feel helped me on my way to getting my yorkie to listen and obey my every command. Here are some tips and strategies that I have found will help others as well.

– Try not to scold, punish, yell or hit your terrier. I recently gave up all aggressive training tactics and now it seems like mine is not that difficult to train. In fact, he seems to react better now that I no longer do those things to him.

– Yorkshire Terriers are a completely different breed of dog from the others. I found that other popular dog training methods no longer seem to stick with it, they actually seem to backfire in many examples I have tried. I am currently researching this further to confirm.

– When training your yorkie commands, you should seek to master one command at a time and not confuse it. Only use the word, for example, if you are trying to train your dog to sit. Say just sit one minute and then say sit the next minute. Saying sit and then sit alone confuses him even more. Also try to master one command before moving on to the next, this also confuses them.

– It is an appropriate way to treat your dog. Only use treats when your yorkie is doing exactly what you want him to do. Not half of what you’re asking your yorkie for. If you tell your yorkie to sit when he’s on the floor and go to the couch to sit down, refrain from giving him the treat.

It is in the instinct of a Yorkshire Terrier to obey you. These are just a few helpful tips that me and my yorkie have had success with.
