While the final score may have been 40-17, Northern Illinois dominated Fresno State as the Huskies scored on 7 straight possessions and never punted in the game.

Fresno State finished the year with an 8-5 mark; Northern Illinois at 11-3.

A pair of rookie quarterbacks, Brigham Young’s Jake Heaps and Troy’s Corey Robinson, shone brightly as they joined Northern Illinois in leading their teams to victory the same day in two other bowl games.

Jake Heaps, a true freshman and one of college football’s top QB recruits, helped BYU topple UTEP (Texas-El Paso), 52-24, in the New Mexico Bowl. Last year, Heaps led Skyline High School to its third straight Washington State 4A championship. He passed for 9,196 yards and 114 touchdowns in his prep career.

Heaps, who shared time at quarterback with Riley Nelson before he was injured, initially struggled as a starter, but his finishing couldn’t have been better.

The BYU Cougars went 1-4 to open the season and to get to a bowl game, let alone win one, seemed unlikely but, with everything going in Heaps’ favor, they finished 5-2 to become bowl-eligible with 6-6.

Jake Heaps completed 7 of his first 9 passes, with the 2 incompletions being dropped passes that should have been caught by receivers. Late in games, Heaps was 25-for-34 (73%) for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns; Cody Hoffman caught 3 of them for 31, 29 and 3 yards.

The 4 TD passes gave Heaps 15 per year, breaking Ty Detmer’s freshman record of 22 years. Detmer played 14 years in the NFL for 6 different teams.

Heaps, who became the first freshman to start for BYU in the Cougars’ 29 bowl game appearances, was named the New Mexico Bowl Offensive Player of the Game. Not bad for a 6-foot-2, 205-pound true freshman. He is tough too. Heaps played through a broken rib he received in BYU’s last game 17-16 loss at Utah.

Mike Price and his UTEP Miners had the opposite experience this season: They started the season 5-1 but finished 1-6. UTEP reached a bowl game for the first time since 2005, but fell to 0-5 in bowl games since beating Mississippi 14-7 in the 1967 Sun Bowl.

Corey Robinson, a redshirt freshman, learned his lessons well. It had to be hard for Robinson to see his first year after he threw for 5,872 yards and a national record 91 touchdowns during his senior year at Lone Oak High School in Paducah (KY). With work and other daily obligations, communication may be the first thing to go missing. Try to establish a daily routine. The best time is usually at the end of the day, when you can both talk about how it went. Even just a few minutes together every day to connect and communicate with each other can produce amazing results.

2. Another nice thing can be to surprise them with a call or text about how much you miss or love them.. An occasional unexpected voicemail, email, or text can go a long way to show them that you’re thinking of them throughout the day.

1. Greeting – Seat: Make sure all guests are greeted as soon as they enter the restaurant. You can even add more flair by opening the door and welcoming them as guests. Seat your guests as quickly as possible. Customers hate standing in the doorway when there are plenty of open tables in sight.
2. Say-Sell: Inform guests about the menu to sell the menu. This is a key factor for all service personnel. Waiters and waitresses must be informed immediately of any changes to the menu and if there are any special promotions. They must know the menu completely. They should be able to answer any questions from guests. They should also know what they personally like on the menu and what are the popular items on the menu. They should sell the menu. Plant the thought in the guest’s mind by suggesting a menu item. If the guest says they don’t like that item, she should ask if they like a certain type of food: spicy or mild, fried or grilled, etc. Your questions stimulate the thoughts in the guest’s mind and create the feeling that the server sincerely wants to please that guest, which should always be the case.
3. Ring-Bring: Ring in the food immediately. Each server needs to be trained on how to place orders or place orders in the kitchen. Refill drinks when the glass is half full. Don’t wait until you see an empty glass or the guest to ask for a refill. The server must be proactive and reload before being prompted. They should also check during the meal and remove empty plates or glasses.
5. Say – Sell Desserts: Before the guests finish eating the main dish, the server should suggest a dessert. Plant the idea in the guest’s mind by saying, “Save room for one of our delicious desserts.” Servers should not simply ask if the guest wants dessert. The server should say something like, “We have these delicious moist chocolate cakes baked at a local bakery. It’s my favorite dessert. Wouldn’t you love to try it?” If the guest says no, he can also ask about the guest’s favorite dessert. If the guest says that he is too full for dessert, the server can suggest a to-go box to have dessert later. If desserts are ordered, they must be brought immediately. If a dessert order is not placed, the server must ensure that the guest’s check is ready.
6. Check-back – Check-down: Within two bites or within two minutes, the server must recheck on the dessert with the check already counted. If the guests are happy with the dessert or did not order dessert, then the waiter can leave the bill. If you have server verification pads, place them upright. This serves two purposes: it’s easy for the guest to see the check, and it’s also easy for the server to tell if the guest has the payment ready when the checkbook is no longer upright. Make sure the server has provided to-go boxes, if requested, or suggest them if there’s a lot of food left over. The server should bring those to-go boxes immediately.
7. Receive-Reboot: The server should receive the payment again. If it’s a credit card, they should process it right away and return it to the guest for signature. The server should also invite the diner back to the restaurant and thank them for visiting. Then, once the guests have left the table, the server must reset the table within two minutes so that the next guests can be seated.

Your staff can easily learn these steps. Different restaurants may vary in their style of service, but these steps can be used or adapted for any restaurant. Consistent implementation of these steps will create the right impression on your guests and they will want to return.

Meeting in the alley before the shift

Management is ultimately responsible for driving sales at your restaurant. They must properly motivate their staff and communicate effectively.

Fifteen minutes before any peak period, management must hold a meeting in the alley to keep employees informed. Always make sure the alley rally is upbeat and positive, as negative feedback will only bring the team down and ultimately affect guest service.

If the past 10 years are used to predict the Letran Squires’ chances of winning the championship in this year’s NCAA Junior Tournament, the odds seem far-fetched.

The last time a Letran team took home the NCAA Junior Division basketball championship, Gloria Arroyo was a newly installed Philippine president.

Since the Squires’ last championship in 2001, the NCAA Juniors basketball landscape has been dominated by perennial champion San Sebastian Staglets and the San Beda Red Cubs.

Despite that, Squires forward Iván Villanueva believes Letrán is one of the top contenders for the championship in the upcoming NCAA Youth Basketball Tournament.

“Our chances of winning the Junior Crown are high this year,” said Villanueva, the wide-bodied senior Lateran who is currently averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists in the FilOil Flying V Preseason Tournament.

As of this writing, the Squires have just handed the Staglets a 57-51 loss and are atop the standings in Group C with five wins and no losses.

Villanueva, however, is quick to point out the caveats: “In order for us to do that, we have four things to do: One, we have to play as a team and share the basketball. Two, we need to play tough defense. Three, our basketball players bank must be productive and, ultimately, we must all be on the same page.

However, he does not speak alone.

The 6-1 high school senior, a natural forward who occasionally plays center for the Squires, backs up his call for teamwork with action.

His 5.3 assist average ranks second in the FilOil tournament and he ranks 12th among high school players in steals with two per game.

He is also ranked as the third best performing player in preseason with a Player Efficiency Rating of 22.5, just behind teammate Bong Quinto and Mapua center Jeric Diego.

However, Villanueva, a member of last season’s NCAA Juniors Mythical team, believes that his teammate Rey Nambatac, LSGH’s Mario Bonleon, San Beda’s Arvin Tolentino and FEU’s Jeremy Pingoy, the reigning UAAP Juniors MVP, are currently the best high school players.

Villanueva, who hopes to join the Letran Knights in the Senior Division after graduation, counts the LSGH Red Cubs and Greenies as tough obstacles to winning the NCAA Juniors championship.

He is not alone.

His teammates Kenneth Alas, Bong Quinto and Nambatac, among others, are expected to help him buck the trend of the past decade and deliver a championship to the Squires in his final high school season.

Nambatac is currently the leader in assists in the FilOil tournament at 7.5 per game, while Quinto is the Squires’ leading scorer (10th overall) at 17.0 per game.

Alas is not far behind with 13.7 points per game.

Whether the Squires will go far this season remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, Villanueva and the rest of the Squires couldn’t care less about the odds.

I’ve always used a Uniden race scanner to keep up with NASCAR events, and I’ve never been disappointed with one. Other than that, the controls are very intuitive and you won’t have much trouble navigating through it.

You have the option of running this device with AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries or with an AC/DC power source. It really is a great Uniden race scanner and it even has the NASCAR logo on its front panel which makes me like it more. It even has a belt clip and wrist strap, so wherever you want to store it, it’s always safe.

Scan and audio output

This Uniden racing scanner has many features and many more channels. It has 1600 typical channels and a maximum of 2500. How could you get bored of this? There are ten service searches that make it easy to find your frequencies, whether you’re looking for frequencies for public safety, news, ham radio, marine, rail, air, CB radio, FRS/GMRS, racing, and other searches. You can find the specific frequency you want to listen to and search certain categories faster and more efficiently. You can even set priority channels that you can easily scan if you need to know if there’s activity on certain frequencies.

As for race car fans like me, there are the pre-programmed race frequencies that all you have to do is search. There are specially pre-programmed frequencies for NASCAR Nextel, Busch, Craftsman, Indy, ARCA and Champ series races. There’s also the Quick Race Scheduling feature that allows you to easily enter race-specific information. The Quick Car Select feature allows you to listen to a specific car exclusively with the push of a button. The scanner also has hot key functions, much like speed dials that allow you to instantly set the frequency for a specific car, race or system with the touch of a button.

The audio output of this device is 320 mW through the speakers, and you can also use headphones that output 30 mW audio through 32 ohm headphones or 6 mW through 64 ohm headphones. You will definitely find this scanner to be great at producing sound so you will have the best time while tuning into your favorite racing channels. Other features

The display backlight has a special feature at night called Backlight-On-Squelch, which is a registered trademark of Uniden. The light only turns on when there is activity on the frequency you’re tuned to so you’re alerted and can also save power. The attenuator eliminates interference from other signal sources at your location. You can even set your scanner’s delay from 0 to 5 seconds so you can shorten or lengthen the response wait time before the device continues scanning through other channels. You can also block frequencies you don’t want to scan or seek, and you can block up to 200 channels, saving you time during scans and searches. There is a channel alert feature that you can use to receive alerts whenever there is activity on the frequency that you specify. Different channels, race channels, groups and other frequencies can even be named using the text tagging feature, which allows you to enter names for important frequencies of up to 16 characters. Key lock, low battery alert and other custom Uniden features are also added on this model.

If you’re a fan of race cars and want a Uniden race scanner, there’s no better model for you than the Uniden SC230 scanner with pre-programmed NASCAR/Busch frequencies. It’s really cool and you just have to love it. I even love it better than the previous model I had, and that was a Uniden as well. So if you are looking for a good suggestion for the best running scanner, then this is the model that I would definitely recommend.
