Unable to manage their lives, they give up and expect others to support them. This does not have to happen and if they had invested more in their own skills and abilities when they were younger, they could escape such trauma.

The best advice for young people is to invest wisely for old age. You only get that chance to do it. If at the age of 50 you are hospitalized with a heart attack or have all your teeth extracted, it is too late to regret it.

Will flattery get you everywhere, or went nowhere?

It is everywhere. We see it when people try to be nice to each other and we experience it when someone tries to sell us something. It is flattery. If you’re like me, you may have grown up thinking of it as a good thing, which captured the gist of the saying, “Well, flattery will get you nowhere,” or was it “everywhere”? We may have jokingly commented on it, but subconsciously we saw it and knew it wasn’t right. The point is that we often don’t see the problem with that; we don’t see it for ‘what’ it really is.

Flattery (or in various ways obsequiousness) is negligible because it occurs to upset. This is “excessive self-interest praise.” Or put another way; is the act of giving excessive compliments, usually for the purpose of ingratiating themselves with the subject.[1] It generally connotes insincerity. It is a disappointment to get what the sycophant wants.

Dale Carnegie once said, “Flattery is telling the other person exactly what you think of yourself.” And the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates said: “Flattery is like friendship in appearance, but not in fruit.” It is hollow, false and harmful.

The opposite of flattery is communicating honestly, without fail. It is communication motivated only by real need, and praise is only given when warranted. I wouldn’t deliver eulogies for any other reason, and definitely not for personal gain. Being obsequious is not just the transmission of soft or sweet words; it is really the broad intent of selfishness and lack of character that drives it.

Vanity (a form of the deadly sin, pride) is the reason we fall into flattery, sometimes want believing the ‘excessive compliments’ we receive, unconsciously pretending that they are true. In these moments, the truth doesn’t matter so much, after all, lying makes us feel very good, and if a person can say it, well, it could be true enough for them to believe it too, then why not others? Do we see any negation here?

Vanity is a trap, pure and simple. Pride comes before destruction as the old proverb puts it. People who accept compliments when they are given show their soft spot for them and are the most susceptible to them in the future. The person who behaves foolishly enough to flatter will find vain people constantly clinging to them. Birds of the same plumage stick together, as the popular saying goes.

Flattery is deceitful and a prelude to deception. One of the most important Christian prophecies.[2] about the end times he mentions that ‘flattery will corrupt’ those who are corruptible. This is not a good place to be. Not falling into the trap but standing firm is wise.

We must be careful with false praise. There is probably more happening to you than you think. Take a moment to think about those who are trying to earn your esteem; wanting to get into your good books. If they are trying to you, be careful; be on your guard as they lie to get something from you or others that they can’t, or don’t bother to get, legitimately. Sweetness is a cover for someone’s true intent.

flattery (another word for that) is a favorite behavior of the ‘proverbial fool.’ They treat others how they want to be treated. They can’t think or speak the truth, so the best thing that comes out of their mouths is a ‘nice lie’. Pleasant lies, however, have the nature of being wrong and, in truth, are no more pleasant than a terrible lie.

What can we learn from people who flatter us? Or perhaps we recognize within ourselves the propensity for this type of behavior? The most likely places you might find yourself engaging in this behavior are at work or in social scenes where you might feel the need to brown-nose. No matter what your gut tells you, it’s never a good idea to engage in this behavior.

  • Finally, make sure it’s fair and appropriate. Whenever you feel drawn to compliment someone, perhaps a superior at work or in a club you belong to, stop and have the courage to hold back and not give ‘excessive praise’. The nice person you’re complimenting will see it all in any case, so make it genuine.

The horse’s confusion would turn to astonishment and it would probably turn away.

    No horse resists simply because it wants to stop. There is no reason for a horse to resist the first time; several repetitions of the cause, followed by a further act, become a habit, and the habit remains when the cause has long since ceased to exist.

    Resistance is a confused, inactive and almost insensitive mental condition that occurs when the horse is faced with two conflicting problems. For example, if a strong-willed horse wants to go to the stable and you jerk back to lead him in another direction, these conflicts can confuse him. Since he can only think of one thing at a time, he gets confused, angry, and stops. If the first swing or two of the whip doesn’t draw his attention to something else, the others will only block his mind and make him even more numb to his surroundings.

    The solution may surprise you, as may much of the advice Professor Beery gives in his series of books on horsemanship. Some is common sense, but some expert advice makes you wonder how it would ever work, but it works.

    Contrary to popular belief, most people are motivated enough to start exercising and eating better in hopes of losing weight. All these efforts are carried out in the hope of seeing the numbers fall in the balance.

    But what if the numbers don’t change?

    They then become disappointed and feel that their efforts are in vain. Some people make the monumental mistake of weighing themselves daily hoping to see weight loss.

    By doing this, they are getting on an emotional roller coaster ride that wreaks havoc on their mental game. On a day when they see a drop in numbers, they are ecstatic. On a day when the numbers go up a bit, they hate their lives and feel like quitting.

    Don’t trust the scale
    The truth of the matter is that a scale NEVER gives the whole picture. She may have lost a pound today and the next day find it back. What you think is a pound of fat could just be the body retaining water that day.

    Your body weight fluctuates all the time due to a variety of factors. Ideally, you should only weigh yourself once a week, and even then, you should take your numbers with a grain of salt.

    This is a very popular plugin to help ease your WoW auction experience; however, I recommend Auctionator over this plugin as it seems easier to use. All you have to do is Alt+click an item when you are in the auction house and it will automatically list that item and calculate the price for you and beat your competition. Very useful indeed!

    This plugin is great for customizing the bars and user interface. This mod also makes the key bindings very easy to configure. I highly recommend using this mod over the standard WoW UI.

    Fiction Book Review: Christmas With Tucker by Greg Kincaid – Hallmark Hall of Fame Movie-Inspired

    You know you’re in for an emotional read with any Hallmark-inspired story. Greg Kincaid continues the tradition with his new book, Christmas with Tuckerdriven by sales success, A Dog Named Christmaswhich became a 2009 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, capturing more than 12 million American viewers.

    George McCray, in his sixties, awaits his mother’s Christmas visit at his dairy farm in Crossing Trails, Kansas. He now suffers from memory loss. To make it easier to remember him, he selected key McCray family memorabilia, including a dog named Tucker’s collar, his grandfather’s tin mug, and the last puzzle his father, John, gave his mother.     Those items come to life, as George recounts in the winter of 1962, as he awaits the arrival of his mother. It was then that, at the age of thirteen, George made the transition from a boy to a young man.

    Neighbor Frank Thorne asks the McCray family to look after his unnamed dog while he serves time for drunken disorderly conduct at the local jail. He learns how Tucker earns his name while he stays with the McCrays.

    George is initially reluctant to befriend the canine, whom he regularly sees from afar before boarding his school bus each morning; tied to a circular chain. It’s not long before the two become inseparable, sharing a warm bed together during the bitter cold Kansas nights. Tucker is loyally there for George, as he often contemplates the loss of his father and the unfairness of life.

    Central America, simpler times prevail. Grandma Cora is quietly working at the puzzle table. She builds challenging puzzles that, until her death, her son John provided. Grandpa Bo drinks every day from the tin cup that has been in the McCray family for generations. He also makes a leather necklace; showing “Tucker McCray”, once, through a turn of events, George gains ownership of the Irish setter.

    Experience the realities of life on the farm. George gets up every day at 4:30 am to help Grandpa Bo milk the cows before he goes to school. It is a generational task that he inherited after the untimely death of his father.

    Feel also the cattle’s affinity for walking on frozen pond water, which often results in death when the ice breaks up and they cannot escape. Kincaid describes George’s harrowing attempt to save the animals, as he endured near frostbite and bleeding bare feet.

    Cherokee County, Kansas experiences one of its worst winter storms days before Christmas. With roads blocked by snow, many residents are left to fend for themselves. Grandpa Bo decides it’s time to teach George how to operate the gigantic machine, called a maintainer (today’s grader), to help clear the roads. “My grandfather was giving me a new rule book for adults so I could get rid of the childish primer that had let me down so much that year. I learned to be suspicious of rules rooted in rights and my needs, and instead to respect the rules based on truth and concern for others”.

    The Christmas spirit alludes to George, given his father’s death and ambivalent feelings about moving back to Minnesota to live with his mother: “Christmas, I thought it wasn’t going to be a good one this year. How could it be when you had thirteen years old and I knew, I just knew you weren’t going to get what you wanted?”
