Fire safety: a must for every home

And the newest addition to fire extinguishers suitable for home use is the wet chemical, for types A and F.

On the other hand, protecting your kitchen is also your main task. A large percentage of fires start in this area. First of all, do not leave open fire cooking unattended. Avoid wearing long-sleeved shirts or shirts made from materials that can easily catch fire. Avoid placing pot holders, dishcloths, or towels near hot surfaces. Always unplug electrical appliances and stoves immediately after use. And keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.

Answer:

Over the years, every home and every investor I know, buying at a foreclosure auction is one of the worst ways to buy. There are several reasons, including the ones you mentioned:

  • You cannot enter the house to assess what needs to be done because the bank is not yet the owner.
  • You have to work with a bank (the worst) and the rules are constantly changing and never in your favor.
  • Don’t buy anything that has a tenant if you can help it. When a mortgage is foreclosed, homeowners are often furious and want to get it out of the bank, which is why they often destroy the property. Ultimately, that doesn’t hurt the bank, just the buyer. We bought one where the repossessed owners had poured sand down all the drains. There is no way to know in advance.
  • Altered bid periods
  • Most repossessed properties are retailed at auction.
  • By the time they get to the auction, the good guys are chosen.
  • There is a very real reason why banks don’t want to lend you to buy these …

So my advice is to attend as many local investor meetings as you can to find properties to buy better than these auctions. If a house is decently priced in a decent area, we find that end-use buyers bid it retail, anyway. And, once your offer is approved, there is a 10-day “altered offer” period in which anyone else can come in and bid more.

There is nothing good about foreclosure auctions. How to do it? Whose. It’s much better to let the mortgage foreclose and then buy from the listed real estate agent once you can review it.

In the second part of our NFL Week 2 preview, we will see four NFL games. I’ll review the following games: Texans at Colts, Saints at Packers, Giants at Eagles, and Raiders at Ravens. The Giants at Eagles will be the showdown of the week out of this group. We’ll see.

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts

Are Texans fans wishing they had Reggie Bush already? The Texans’ offense was stifled when they played the Eagles. Ten points and no rushing attacks won’t do the job in the NFL. The Colts are coming off a great victory in New York against the Giants. It was the Manning Bowl. Now, they get a cupcake in Houston. For the Colts, it’s time to go 9-0 against the Texans.

Choose: Colts Why? The Colts are 8-0 against the Texans and beat them by an average of 15 points per game.

New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers

If it weren’t for Reggie Bush, this game would have about 6 people watching it, all fans. The Packers were eliminated last week and they looked like one of the worst teams in the league. This is no surprise. The Saints looked better against the Browns, but they still have work to do. Neither team is going to the playoffs this season, but it’s worth watching, because Reggie Bush will again get about 20 touches. Last season, the Packers destroyed the Saints, but this Saints team has some key new players.

Choose: Santos Why? Despite his horrible record in Green Bay, I think the addition of Drew Brees and Reggie Bush will help get the job done.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles

The New York giants are in a must-win situation. They are 0-1 after their loss to the Colts and play in what many consider the most difficult division in the NFC. If they go down 0-2, they may not be able to recover. His schedule is brutal. The Eagles will have their first real test this week. Sure, they beat up Texans, but who doesn’t these days? The Giants have won three straight games in Philadelphia, but this game could be different.

Choose: Giants Why? I think both teams will be in the playoffs, but the Giants have too many weapons.

Oakland Raiders at Baltimore Ravens

To say the Raiders looked disgusting in their opener Monday night against the Chargers would be an understatement. They are one of the worst teams in the league. It’s hard to imagine them putting up a good fight in Baltimore. The Ravens have their defense working again. They shut down Tampa Bay and shouldn’t have a problem going 2-0.

Who is Don Prudhomme?

Drag racing star Don Prudhomme has always been a cipher. The man known as the Serpent seemed distant, always focused on his race car and chasing points. He had great respect for the man, but didn’t know much about him other than his win / loss stats.

All that changed after reading this book. This is not your typical broker biography. Instead, it feels like someone turned on a tape recorder and asked Snake to describe everything he can remember from his racing career. The result is an honest exploration of one of the biggest stars in drag racing; and how it evolved. Everything is here: the good, the bad and many things that I never knew before.

Prudhomme doesn’t hesitate to admit when he made mistakes, whether it’s stealing a transmission from a junkyard or failing to follow the advice of others.

Friends made, friends lost

He’s not afraid to talk about the friends he made and the friends he lost in the course of chasing championship points. There are times when sincere regret shines through in his words. There are many things that I would change if I could.

Which is not to say that Prudhomme is not justifiably proud of what he accomplished. It takes the reader on a dizzying journey through drag racing history, from his initial careers as a club dragster; become a hired driver; to eventually control his own equipment. We see him hug funny cars; half at first, then going all in to dominate the class.

Prudhomme explains his return to top fuel and his period as a team owner. I found it fascinating to see how the Serpent went from humble dyslexic child to world champion. I still cannot say that I know Don Prudhomme personally, but he is no longer a mysterious man. The man behind the legend has been revealed.

More than a coffee table book

This looks like a coffee table book, but it doesn’t read like one. If you skip over and just read little excerpts here and there, you will eventually be frustrated, because the book is designed to be read as a complete story from beginning to end. If you start in the middle, you will find yourself at a loss, as Prudhomme often refers to the points discussed earlier in the book.

If you expect a large number of luxurious full-page photos, you will be disappointed. Photos are plentiful, but most appear to be small images reproduced from Snake’s personal scrapbook. Some were taken by professionals, but most are simple snapshots. However, that is not bad. He hadn’t seen most of these private images, and the amateur photographs add to the intimacy of the stories.

Beyond drag racing

Prudhomme is quite humble in the book, and is quick to point out the many people who encouraged him along the way. While the book deals with Prudhomme’s career, it talks about many other racing legends that he was associated with or faced off with in competition. The Snake talks about Tommy Ivo, Roland Leong, Keith Black, Ed Pink, Chris Karamesines, Kenny Bernstein, Raymond Beadle, and many other drag racing celebrities. There are several short memorabilia written by high-profile runners recounting their memories of Prudhomme.

Prudhomme has also found friends in many other forms of motorsports. The Snake had the opportunity to interact with Formula 1 drivers Niki Lauda and Jacky Stewart. He tells of his meeting with Enzo Ferrari and how the eldest of the Ferraris invited Prudhomme to one of Lauda’s test sessions. Prudhomme also had friendly encounters with racing luminaries such as AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Carol Shelby, Dan Gurney and Cale Yarborough. Former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace contributed the forward to the book.

Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen

No biography of Prudhomme would be complete without recounting her friendship with Tom “the Mongoose” McEwen. This could be my only criticism of the book. Prudhomme’s career was so intertwined with McEwen’s that I would have thought there would be more Mongoose anecdotes. Prudhomme gives McEwen all the credit for developing the Wildlife racing program, as well as the sponsorship of Hot Wheels.

Prudhomme also sheds light on the infamous 25th annual US Nationals in which he faced McEwen in the final. Still, he would have enjoyed more details of his relationship with McEwen.

Although most of the book examines Prudhomme’s racing activities, it would not be complete without describing her personal life. We watch the Serpent overcome a troubled childhood and learn how his wife and daughter helped him stay healthy and strong.

Elana Scherr is credited along with Prudhomme as the author. Scherr is a contributing editor for Car and Driver and is a freelance automotive writer. She has competed in NHRA sports classes, so she is well prepared to help Prudhomme tell her story. It is difficult to know which words are from Scherr and which from Prudhomme, but the writing is authentic and reliable.

If you want to relive the golden age of drag racing, this book belongs on your shelf. I read it in a couple of days and I intend to read it again. Bring to life a sport and a way of life that no longer exists. If you only read one racing book this year, make sure it’s this one.

During September and October 2008, I was an active user of Experteer.com premium subscription and this is my honest opinion and review about their services.

The web / Usability … OK

In general, I would say that I am satisfied with the usability of the site. Filling out the forms and entering your profile data is easy and intuitive. The advanced search criteria and additional filtering capabilities are really great. The web allows you to refine your search results by salary, kilometers from your home city, country, and a scoring system. It doesn’t have as many features and possibilities as Monster, but I’d say it’s fine.

Exposure to headhunters … Really?
