The ancient Egyptians created a sophisticated water plumbing system around 4000 B.C. They used baked clay and straw for their pipes before upgrading to copper. The Pharaohs even included bathrooms and other plumbing features in their tombs for the afterlife.

When Did Plumbing Start?

The Romans continued to improve upon the ancient plumbing systems with complex aqueducts and tile wastewater disposal. The water channels were designed to carry 300 gallons of water to bathhouses, amphitheatres, and private residences. The Romans also inscribed their pipes to prevent water theft. Sadly, as the Roman Empire fell both water supply and sanitation declined.

In the early 1800s growing cities such as New York were struggling with a dirty sewage system that resulted in cholera and other disease outbreaks. The city engineers finally decided to change things and put an end to the typhoid, dysentery, and cholera epidemics that ravaged the city.

They began by building the first sewer system that spanned a city. They also elevated the streets, raising them up to 8 feet in some places, and putting in sewer lines under the roadways.

Another great accomplishment was bringing running water to homes through a system called the “fire main.” It was an underground pipe that delivered water to homes and businesses, and it ran in the same direction as the sewage. This was a major improvement over the previous plumbing system, where sewage and water were mixed together on their way to the public sewer system.

Today, we are still improving the plumbing system. We no longer use toxic chemicals to treat our sewage and we’ve made significant progress in conserving our water resources. We’ve implemented regulations like limiting potable water usage for lawn irrigation, avoiding watering the grass during the heat of day, and turning off fountains that aren’t functional.
