Things to do in Freeport, Grand Bahama

Only in Bahamas

The Bahamas is a very beautiful country made up of 700 islands, rocks and cays. Each island is unique and has its own special style. The population size on the islands ranges from around 200,000 in the capital of New Providence to around 7,000 on smaller islands such as Exuma and Abaco.

The capital of New Providence, the second city of Grand Bahama, and many of the family islands are equipped with basic electricity, water, internet, and cable services. Many also have well-paved roads that make it easy to access by transport or on foot. The country stands out for its cleanliness, but most importantly, its people. One of the most rewarding assets that truly makes the Bahamas unique is the courteous attitude and genuine nature of its citizens.

It has been observed that various international celebrities flock to the various islands of the Bahamas and declare it as a place where one can relax and not be hassled by fans, media or paparazzi. While the capital, New Providence, offers a unique yet modern experience, “outside/family islands” are becoming popular by providing a more authentic feel.

If you plan to visit with relaxation in mind, here are some things to do when you make your trip. Make sure you rent a car for at least one day. Many of the familiar islands are still in their natural pristine state and are not overpopulated with corporations, large companies, chemical plants and the like. As a result, you won’t have much traffic. Depending on which island you choose to go to, you may be able to get by with renting a cart like on the island of Bimini. Many of the islands are very safe, but of course crime exists everywhere so use common sense and good judgment when venturing out.

Take in the scenery, mingle with the locals, and get a chance to really experience island life. It may seem strange that many locals live near the beach, but very few frequent it. Find out what a typical day includes for natives having a good conversation with people.

Eat! Be sure to hit the local restaurants for some real Bahamian food. You can venture off the beaten path, especially if you’re visiting Freeport, Grand Bahama, and try any of the following: peas and rice, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, split conch, steamed conch, Mere. and much more! For desserts, you must try the Bahamian Guava Cake, Rum Cake, Coconut Cake, and Pineapple Cake! For your drinks, try the local goombay punch, junkanoo punch, and for adult beverages, Kalik and Sands beer.

Listen to music from the Bahamas! Stop by any of the local record stores and ask for local artists like KB (Kirkland Bodie), Bahamen, Phill Stubbs, etc.

Try some of the Bahamian vernacular and infuse yourself with the culture. For example, in the mornings, when someone passes by, Bahamians often say “morning” to say good morning to passersby. It is not necessary to know the person. Try it and have fun!
