High adventure at Three Camel Lodge

Who would have imagined that Mongolia would have one of the best eco-adventure shelters in the world? In fact, this is the case with Three Camel Lodge, where comfort and ecotourism come together in one of the top ten adventure lodges in the world.

Situated on the edge of the Gobi Desert in the Gobi Gurvansaickhan National Park, Three Camel Lodge is the ideal starting point to delve into the diverse terrain of Mongolia. Nestled in the foothills of the Gobi-Attai Mountains, this 50-acre outpost serves as a perfect base for desert exploration. The vast and fascinating landscape of the Gobi Desert, with its red rock cliffs, lush valleys, and towering sand dunes, is best explored on foot, horseback, camel, and kayak with excellent expedition options on offer.

Desert wildlife: hares, hedgehogs, and numerous species of birds roam the camp grounds. Ancient petroglyphs depicting antelopes, sheep, mountain goats, and wolves are within easy walking distance. Camel trekking through sand dunes and forests to explore the diverse ecosystems of the Gobi are one of many adventures that provide the opportunity to see local wildlife. Horseback riding through the vast desert plains of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, where brown bears and numerous birds roam under an endless blue sky, will lead to the legendary Gunjin Buddhist Temple.

Multi-activity expeditions include kayaking on Lake Hovsgol and then continuing along ancient tea trade routes on a double-humped camel. ATV tours, horseback riding and mountain biking to remote canyons, mountain springs and verdant valleys are an integral part of the myriad of adventures on offer, while overnight tent expeditions are ideal for experiencing the unique nature of Gobi. Closer to the camp, the bright red rocks of the Flaming Cliffs contain the mysteries of ancient dinosaur fossils to be excavated. And for those who want to try the Gobi, practical cooking classes are offered.

Built with the help of the local community in accordance with environmental and sustainable development standards, the lodge uses its natural elements, the sun and the wind, for its renewable energy. Handcrafted by local artisans, the thirty gers of lattice wood, canvas and felt, traditional tents of Mongolian nomadic herders, provide a peaceful break in the silence of the desert. Gers’ simple exteriors blend into the extraordinary landscaping with south-facing doors, built according to local tradition, providing unobstructed views of the desert. Simple exteriors reveal charming and comfortable interiors, outfitted with hand-painted furniture, wood-burning stoves, spacious beds with plush cashmere blankets, and felt slippers and bathrobes.

Designed in traditional style after a single nail-less Mongolian temple, the Dino, the camp’s main lodge, buzzes with energy and activity. Guests enjoy meals made from fresh, locally grown organic ingredients of traditional Mongolian food. In the evening, music and dance shows are offered in the light of the lit fireplace. In utter silence and darkness, the star-studded sky seems to have no end.

The hostel setting offers an authentic taste of Mongolian culture, where nomadic herdsmen often stop to visit and feast on guests. The Three Camel Lodge combines adventure, sophistication, and traditional Mongolian hospitality to create the ultimate adventure travel experience with the stunning setting of the Gobi Desert.
