Earlier this week I received an email from a senior at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum, Idaho, who was enrolling at the University of Idaho to major in journalism next fall semester. She is writing a research paper titled “Why Your Future Career Choice Is Right for You?”

He listed 25 questions like “What made you choose your profession?”, “How many years of school did you go through?”, “Who was your inspiration?”, etc. Question number eight was a common question I received. , “What are your recommendations for someone considering this profession?”

My answer? Apply for the internship.

This is how most producers, photographers, reporters and presenters get their first job. The absolute best way to start your journey into the world of broadcast journalism is by working as an intern.

It’s your first honest way to take a look inside a working newsroom and understand how the television business works. Many of the things you learn on the job are not necessarily the things you learn in the classroom. Not everyone who works in television news graduated with a degree in

The good news is that most TV stations in the country offer internships. The bad news is that most, if not all, are unpaid. But I promise you that the lessons you learn and the people you meet will be invaluable in the future. And here’s a little fact, sure it’s about what you know, but sometimes, it’s more about WHO you know when it comes to landing your first paying position.

In addition to not getting paid, you will be doing jobs that nobody else wants to do. Plan to answer phones, listen to scanners, record videotapes, and transcribe verbatim interviews reporters conducted earlier in the day—things that don’t involve sitting at the anchor’s desk or holding a microphone.

To get started, simply call or walk into your local TV news station and fill out an application. Don’t call the newsroom and ask for the lead anchor’s News Director. You can call the newsroom and ask if they accept applications and if they can point you to the right person to talk to. If you’re willing to move, you have over a thousand TV stations to choose from. There are more than 200 television markets in the country, each broken down by households.

For example, the number one market in the country is New York. New York has an estimated 7.5 million television households, which is just over six and a half percent of the country. Moving down the list after New York are Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Washington DC, and rounding out the top 10 is Houston, Texas.

The size of the market depends on how many households with televisions there are in that specific city. Spokane, Washington, is the 75th market with about 419,000 television households. To give you some perspective, the smallest market in the United States is Glendive, Montana at 210. It has fewer than 4,000 television households. Number 209 is North Platte, Nebraska, with just over 15,000.

In most cases, each city has at least three television news affiliates; ABC, CBS and NBC. You will also find FOX and CW. Unless you live in New York, you won’t find CNN, MSNBC, or Fox News.

Another requirement to apply for an internship is to be enrolled in the university. I had three internships during college and for each internship I earned college credit, between 3 and 6 credits.

So, if you want to be the next Peter Jennings or your hometown’s assigned general reporter, the best way to start is to get an internship and see firsthand what goes on in a real-life newsroom.

In Phase 1, your consultant will interpret information obtained from site searches and other publicly available information, such as geological and hydrological maps. They will also conduct a site tour to gain an understanding of the area on the ground. From this information, they will develop a Conceptual Site Model (CSM) and complete a Qualitative Risk Assessment (QRA) in accordance with UK guidance. If the QRA demonstrates low risks, no action is required. If the QRA indicates medium or high risks, then a Phase 2 contamination assessment is required.

The Phase 2 evaluation involves physical sampling of the soil to confirm the level of contaminants. These results are compared to the UK soil and groundwater thresholds (Generic Assessment Criteria or GAC) to determine whether and to what extent the soil is contaminated and poses a risk. If the site is contaminated, remediation will be required. This is Phase 3.

Your consultant will agree to a Phase 3 remediation scheme with the Local Authority and will be able to monitor and report on the progress of the scheme. They can also manage the entire process on your behalf.

Guidance documents relevant to housing are DEFRA & Environment Agency (2004) Model of Procedures for the Management of Soil Contamination and NHBC and CEIH (2008) Guide for Safe Housing Development on Land Affected by Contamination.

It’s amazing how young children can find an old movie they might have forgotten about, decide they like it, and play it over and over again.

My five-year-old has done just that with Eddie Murphy’s Daddy’s Daycare. What’s really interesting is that when I first saw this movie, I saw it through the eyes of a childless man. OH BUT NOT THIS TIME.

Now every time I watch this movie with my son, which is at least twice a week as of the time I write this. I pick up on the underlying messages of the film that really motivate me as a father and an entrepreneur.

Eddie Murphy’s character in this film had a very important and slow career in product development. She routinely answered her cell phone call and the endless chimes of email. Most men who have worked in the corporate world can relate to this.

Charlie has to instantly come to terms with the reality that his employer had the power to discontinue the job in which he had found his identity. And it didn’t matter how much he invested emotionally. It didn’t matter what his financial obligations were. And it didn’t even matter that he had brought success to the company in the past. What’s next?

What really matters

Charlie no longer took up all of his time with meetings, presentations, emails, and phone calls. So what does he do now? Well, isn’t it obvious from the title? returned to be Dad. She even read to her son at night and even fell asleep in bed with him. (And the crowd goes AWWWW!)

With a mix of lots of poop humor, dress up games, sugar rush and sugar crashes and of course NAP TIME. Well, because of Charlie’s decision to start this business from home, he and his son have spent a lot more time together.

Charlie went from being an absent Father due to his career, to being a present and committed Father due to a business decision. Which brings me to the next and very valuable point.

Since this is a family comedy, a lot of hilarity ensues, along with challenges from two very inexperienced men who run a daycare center, while competing with the big private academy in town.

Throughout their journey they face surprise searches, sabotage and Charlie is even faced with the very difficult choice of going back to his old job.

Sidebar: To me this represents the struggle that many men go through every day, when they leave their home and their children.

But something amazing happens when he briefly decides to return to the corporate world and leave his innovative daycare for parents. While he was in the boardroom, the same man who fired him not long ago asked him to give a presentation.

THAT he finally hits him over the head. Realizing that the quality time she has been able to spend with his son is priceless, she abruptly excused herself and quickly went to find her son from the feared Academy she had been competing against. and did the BOLD statement that daycare for parents it was here to stay.

As I watch this movie over and over again. Simultaneously I observe my son. I look at which parts of the movie make him laugh and realize I’m laughing at the same parts. And guess what… Me too when I was his age. Watching my son learn and grow highlights my own attributes that I am responsible for developing or correcting within him.

My son has such an amazing influence on how I do my career and how I’ve come to understand the value of time. I am so thankful that it was tough enough to endure my days of being an absentee parent due to career choices. However, caring enough to forget my absence the moment I got home. (She pauses to catch her breath and not cry.)

I hope this post motivates another Father to decide that the ones he is most important to are also worth more of his time than anything else.

There were a plethora of exciting NFL games over the weekend. We had the classic Brady vs. Manning matchup that lived up to the hype, big hits with the Eagles and Giants meeting, and Brett Favre playing in his last significant game against his old Packers team. As great as these games were, no NFL game was more revealing of the kind of league we have than the Raiders/Steelers game. I know, the game was a 35-3 dominance where the Steelers were in control of every facet of the game. I realize they made one of the best running attacks in the league non-existent. I understand that without all the Steelers penalties, the score would have been even more lopsided. On an emotion scale, this game couldn’t possibly capture the attention of a hermit crab. However, this game optimizes the NFL in every way. I’ll explain.

The NFL, more than any other sports league, is a coaching league and it was most evident with this Steelers/Raiders game. Let’s rewind two weeks. The Raiders had just posted an overtime win against the division rival Kansas City Chiefs. At (5-4), the Raiders already had as many wins as they had all of last year. Everyone was proclaiming that the “Mystic Raider” had returned. Then they get a bye week and get an extra week to prepare for the Steelers. Meanwhile, the Steelers are coming off an emotionally draining Sunday Night Football loss to the New England Patriots. Raiders coach Tom Cable has an extra week to prepare and not only does coach Mike Tomlin’s team win, but at no time during the 60 minutes was it even a game.

It all comes down to preparation. Mike Tomlin is 13-6 after one loss. He knows how to win after his team just suffered a loss. They all jumped on the Raiders bandwagon last week. I did not buy the hype. Why? Because his main office is not stable. You want to see a stable environment, watch the New England Patriots. Coach Belichick and owner Robert Craft have been about as stable an organization as it gets. Belichick is 15-4 after a bye week. Andy Reid is a perfect 12-0 after a bye week. Coincidence? The NFL is a league of coaches.

Mike Tomlin is one of the top five coaches in the league because what defines you as a leader is how you respond in a crisis. Tomlin responds after the meltdown with a 13-6 record. The numbers don’t lie. Andy Reid and Bill Belichick are money when they have two weeks to prepare. Look at the two coaches who have been fired in recent weeks. The Cowboys’ first coach, Wade, “made of cookie dough” Phillips. Today, Brad “can’t control the wardrobe” Childress was also sent packing. Phillips this season was (2-5) after a loss, while Childress was (1-3). The NFL has a lot of parody and adversity, it’s the nature of the game. If one of a company’s best salespeople for ten years starts having big dips consistently, a good company will ditch him or her for a newer model.

The Washington Redskins are a prime example of what not to do. Owner Daniel Snyder spends $100 million on a fat, undisciplined defensive lineman who doesn’t even want to play his style of defense. The NFL is not an all-star league and it is not a sexy league. He pays Kobe Bryant $100 million because he brings championships and fans to the seats. It is a league of faces. A player can do that in the NBA, but the NFL is different. It takes everyone fulfilling their roles and a lot of training to win consistently. So, I just don’t buy the Raiders and Sunday against the Steelers just reaffirmed my feelings. It’s not that the Raiders lost, but how they lost. They are known for their running game and they had two weeks to prepare. But when they faced an Elite trainer in Mike Tomlin, they couldn’t run the ball for their lives.

The NFL is a league of coaches. Baseball and basketball is a league of players. Joe Girardi replaces Joe Torre and wins a title. He won thanks to the players they got in the offseason: CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Mark Teixeira. He now helped, but the players put the team over the hump. Captains in baseball aren’t nearly as important as coaches in the NFL. God has built a natural safety valve in the earth for expansion and contraction. This safety valve is called an earthquake. The number, magnitude, and location are important in understanding the scriptures that deal with the last days. The first scripture we will deal with is Matthew 24:7.

This recipe is easy to follow and can be flavored in many different ways to customize the frosting to the flavor of your cake. You can substitute other flavored powdered creamers and substitute whipped cream for other flavored liquid creamers. There are also several different flavor concentrate options on the market that can be used in place of the vanilla extract in this recipe.

White Buttercream Frosting

• 8 cups of powdered sugar

• 3/4 cup powdered coffee creamer

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 2 cups unsalted butter, softened

• 1-1/2 cups Crisco Shorting

• 3/4 – 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• 3 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract

• 1/4 cup Creme Bouquet flavor (or flavor of your choice)

1. In a KitchenAid or other heavy-duty mixer, combine all dry ingredients. Blend for 2 minutes.

2. Add the heavy whipping cream slowly, then the vanilla extract and Creme Bouquet flavors (or other flavoring). Gently add the softened butter and Crisco shortening. The mixture will be extremely thick at this point. You may want to cover your mixer with a towel.

3. Increase the speed of the mixture to beat it a bit more, then decrease the speed. Add more heavy whipping cream a little at a time, then beat well for seven to ten minutes until desired consistency is reached.

variations:

Buttercream Buttercream Butterstotch – omit the flavor of the bouquet of cream. Melt and chill one 11 oz. packet of caramel chips then add step two after the butter and shortening. Continue with the rest of the instructions.

eggnog cream – Omit the Nata Bouquet Flavor and substitute the Liquid Whipping Cream for the Rompehuevos and continue with the Rest of the Instructions.
