The importance of good lighting in the kitchen

Since the kitchen is one of the busiest rooms in many homes, good kitchen lighting is important to its overall design and feel.

The practice of implementing good lighting design is a popular and profitable project that many homeowners choose to undertake to give their kitchens an extra personal touch and make it stand out from the crowd.

There are several places, many of which some never consider, to add lighting. Have you ever thought about kitchen cabinet lighting or kitchen lighting above the sink? These are just two places where additional lighting should go to accentuate your appliances and other kitchen accessories.

Through the right design decisions, you can enhance the look of your kitchen and create a positive environment that you, your family and guests will greatly appreciate.

However, in order to do that, it is important to know what the different types of kitchen lighting are and how they are typically implemented in a kitchen design.

The four types of lighting to consider before beginning a kitchen remodeling project are task lighting, ambient lighting, accent lighting, and accent lighting. Each of these types of lighting serves a different purpose than the others, so becoming familiar with each would be to your advantage while you are in the planning stages of your project.

Ambient lighting is usually the most prevalent type of lighting. Its low intensity creates a soft sheen that makes it safe to work with in most kitchen areas. Many people associate ambient lighting with setting the mood in a room not only in kitchens, but also in places like restaurants and bars. The right amount of ambient light can make a room feel cozy and homey.

Task lighting is a type of kitchen lighting that provides a higher intensity glow. This is why task lighting is often limited to places like the sink and cabinets, where being able to see is important. To get the most out of this type of lighting, consider placing it not only over your sink, but also over other heavy-use kitchen items like cutting boards and stovetops.

Accent lighting is designed to show things off. If you have an expensive new refrigerator or another item in your kitchen, like rare crockery, that you want people to notice, then this is the type of lighting to use for that. It doesn’t make your kitchen work areas more functional, but its aesthetic value has made it popular with homeowners doing kitchen renovations.

Finally, there is the decorative lighting. This type of kitchen lighting allows you to make the space truly yours. Whatever your lighting design, it’s important to remember the old adage “less is more” with accent lighting. Going overboard with accent lighting can make for a bold and eye-catching look, while a minimalist approach can bring understated refinement to the room.

Ask an expert: interior design

Over many years as an interior designer, what would be the top 3 changes in consumer preferences during that time?

One thing that immediately comes to mind is the switch from stain cabinets to paint cabinets. White kitchens are back! Customers are leaning more towards lighter and brighter shades than the red/orange shades of the last decade. Flooring has changed quite a bit with more customers opting for LVP (Luxury Vinyl Sheet) throughout their home. LVP has come this far and is now super durable, easy to maintain and looks amazingly real. Third, quartz countertops are becoming the standard. I rarely specify granite anymore. Quartz is so easy to maintain compared to granite and the colors and patterns that are now available mimic everything from natural marble to exotic granites.

What are some future ideas and predictions? Any new trends that may take place in 2018/19 and beyond?

Natural woods are very popular right now: hand-scraped wide-plank barn flooring, as well as openly distressed furniture. What is also starting to emerge in design is more of a traditional style again. Details throughout and the use of rich jewel tones are all the rage right now along with warm metal tones (yes, bronze is back but in an updated way!).

What are some of the challenges to face in helping clients realize their dream renovation?

Many clients are afraid to trust their style intuition. They often fight between their hearts and their brains for what they want. They often try to force themselves to change the color palettes or styles of their latest home and sometimes push themselves out of their comfort zone. I always tell clients to listen to their instincts. Their home is their sanctuary and they need to feel comfortable, relaxed and love being home.

Are there certain types of renovations that tend to add the most value to a home’s selling price?

Kitchens, bathrooms and basic developments are always the spaces that are used the most, therefore, they increase the value of your home. Those rooms are the ones that potential home buyers predominantly look for because they know those are the areas where they will be spending the most time.

How do you get ideas or inspiration to help guide you as you consider renovation options?

I often suggest that clients send me photos of houses, rooms, styles, products that they find on home decor sites. Customers often don’t know what their style is, so if they can show me pictures of things they like, I can usually understand them better. Visiting show houses is also a great way to find inspiration and new ideas.

Creativity leads to family enrichment

CREATIVE ENRICHMENT FOR FAMILIES

I found much enrichment in reading stories to my daughter every night until she was twelve years old. To this day we share those rich experiences. Many years ago we sat on the sofa and I drew pictures for my daughter. She told me how she wanted the figure to look and I, to the best of my ability, drew that figure. It was just a fun game at the time, but it was that kind of creative play that honed my daughter’s creative talents in the future and brought us closer together as two who had interacted creatively. But what I’ve learned is that giving your kids personal time is better than prioritizing any video game they might play, better than any late report you might have to put together, better than huddled around the TV, better than just about anything. And here’s why…

When you interact with your children through reading, writing, painting, drawing, etc. you are joining them. Personal dialogues, day by day, father/son: “… He took the ball from me, he called me a rat, do your homework, don’t mess up the kitchen, feed the dog, clean your feet”… .. it just isn’t part of the interactive creative dialogue. Father and son are on the same level. Everyone shares creative moments: your kids enjoy listening to you read to them, they enjoy drawing pictures with them and telling stories about the pictures, they all have fun writing about the day they welcomed their cute kitty, who has now grown into a big, pompous family cat .

FORGET THE FATHER/SON DIALOGUE

You are away from the petty mess of parents scolding children and children reacting negatively. Reading, writing, and doing art projects together puts everyone on the same page. If you maintain the same level of play with all the participants and forget about the father and son roles that you normally play, you will have fun!

Okay, but there’s still soccer, football, ballet, and when in the world can you find time for creative play? Take time for creative interaction. Yes, it is important that your child’s team win the next game and you should be there to cheer them on. But taking a little time, even twenty minutes, to read, write, and draw together will help you win his heart as a trustworthy, loving parent who is willing to get to know him on his level and share a creative process with him.

THE MESSAGE IS THE MENTAL MASSAGE

Life goes on, children grow up fast. Taking those twenty minutes for yourself once or twice a week will change the texture of your lives. Yes, it will be hard to keep them away from their video game and texting friends. But soon her message will be clear: “I just want to spend some time with you.” No lectures, no scolding, no insults, just time spent together on a little project to find out what you’re both made of without the roles of father and son to play. One night, try this. Turn off the TV. Turn off video games. Sit down with the children and make up a story. A small and simple story. And then everyone draws it. Pass the drawings and talk about the drawing, no criticism, no disparagement, just talk.

OK, everyone’s yawning, I know. But that will happen if you repeat it next week and the week after. You’re going to start having a good time. It can be a bit scary at first. It’s not a video game or television. It’s just you and the kids. Don’t worry. Soon, you will discover some things about yourselves, familiar things that soccer and ballet can’t solve. Like who you are as interrelated human beings, what do you think of each other and how, without competition or bad words from anyone, you can look at each other and admire each other for who you are.

THAT NICE CREATIVE FEELING

Do you remember how you wanted to paint an oil painting? Do you remember the drawing class you took in community college and you loved it? Recall the creative things you’ve done, like finding the right knobs for your kitchen cabinets, installing low-voltage lighting around your driveway to dramatically illuminate trees and bushes, or making that goofy birthday card for your kid, because he just couldn’t. t find one that was correct? You got a warm glow from those projects, didn’t you? Good.

CREATIVE TIME FOR YOURSELF

Take some creative time for yourself. Okay, currently your private time is between 10:30 and 11:00 at night, when you can read a few pages of that novel you’ve renewed three times at the local library and then collapse. Take advantage of YOUR OWN twenty creative minutes once or twice a week. Decide what you will do during those twenty minutes. Draw, paint, write? Connect to your creative mind, not for the boss, but for yourself. Remember favorite places and images from childhood. Write or draw on them. Enhance your life with color through pastels or acrylic or oil paints. Discover the magic of media and artistic skills. Sit down with a sketch pad and draw the plants in your house. Make a cake from a picture of your neighbor at your last New Year’s Eve party (it was sooo much fun, wasn’t it?)

It will take a month or so. After these creative times, you will feel the ripple effect. It’s a good feeling caused by instructing your conscious and subconscious to be creative and delve into the parts of your brain that give you a healthy and well-balanced (even wise!) sense of being. Then increase those minutes. Try twenty to thirty minutes a day. The ripple effect will be more like a positive tidal wave of good feelings, tapping into the powers of your mind that have been dormant for too long.

Buying Goatees and Sweaters

Selecting new knobs and pulls is a fun task that requires many different considerations. First it is important to understand the differences between the different types of knobs and handles. Knobs are small round balls that stick to the drawer or cabinet. Pulls can include knobs or handles, which are longer and thinner. Both knobs and handles serve the same function, which is to open cabinets and drawers. The most common places where knobs and pulls are needed include the kitchen, bathroom, and some cabinets with drawers and cupboards. Selecting the right kind of hardware for your space is certainly an important job that requires answering a lot of questions, but at the end of the process, you’ll have cabinets and drawers that look completely different than they did before.

Style

One of the first things to consider when thinking about knobs and pulls is the type of style you want to invoke. The hardware should certainly match the cabinets and drawers, but it should also be highly functional. Some pieces are more difficult to grip than others, so it’s important to try out several types of knobs and handles before making a decision on which one you like best.

Color is also an important part of the style, and there are many different colors available. Metal hardware usually comes in silver or yellow, depending on the type of metal that is selected. However, glass and plastic handles and knobs can be very colorful.

material

We’ve already talked about the different types of materials that are available for knobs and pulls, but it’s important to realize that there are advantages and disadvantages to different materials. Metal is without a doubt the most popular material right now because it lasts forever, but glass is becoming more popular due to the wide selection of colors available. Some of the very high-quality glass hardware products are capable of taking a fair bit of abuse, although chipping is still a real problem with some glass pieces. Just remember that metal is the most durable, closely followed by glass. Plastic tends to break very easily, so it’s best to avoid cheap plastic knobs.

Cabinet and drawer sizes

Another important aspect to take into account are the sizes of the cabinets and drawers. Just as every kitchen has different sizes of doors and drawer fronts that need knobs and pulls, there are also many different sizes of pulls available. Start by thinking about the face size of each item that needs hardware. In the case of handles or flat handles, it may be possible to use the same piece for the entire room. However, sometimes it may be necessary to choose a hardware line that offers more than one size. This will ensure that you can size each of the hardware pieces appropriately. Remember that a very small drawer with a huge knob is going to look pretty weird, so you may need the smaller size for a smaller drawer. Just use your judgment of what looks good when selecting the best sweaters.

Another part of the size is the weight of the drawers and chests of drawers. Hardware is made for different weights, and sometimes you may find a piece that doesn’t work with very heavy cabinet doors or drawers that are difficult to pull out. Sometimes it is possible to purchase a higher quality screw than the ones that come with the hardware. This will help prevent the screw from breaking.

Face transplants in the news

More akin to science fiction than scientific reality, several people have received face transplants in recent years. Now relegated to only the most horrific accidents, like most medical miracles, as techniques are perfected this type of operation will eventually become much more common. Once that happens, it’s only a matter of time until the procedure becomes available as an elective surgery for those who aren’t happy with their existing faces, or perhaps just want a new look. After all, who wants to spend their whole life with the same old face? Wouldn’t it be nice to face you again for your 25th high school reunion? And then again for 30?

Fortunately, great strides have also been made in face transplants for your kitchen (and other) cabinets. As materials and techniques have been perfected, kitchen remodeling can now be done cheaply and optionally, and when done correctly, it can be indistinguishable from a new kitchen, beautifying all those unsightly places that have embarrassed you for years.

In the not too distant past, a few brave practitioners risked their reputations using early reshaping techniques. You can choose from a catalog of about three different styles and colors for the siding, and most of them were flimsy laminate doors that had no detail. To make matters worse, the material was bonded to the face of the cabinets with contact cement, a terribly toxic and highly flammable adhesive that had a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. Not very tempting!

So scientists at Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (3M) went to work and created a new adhesive that is non-toxic, non-flammable, has no odor, and gets stronger as it ages. There is nothing better than that! So someone (not sure exactly who) developed a material called Rigid-Thermofoil, also known as RTF. This new wonder product is a vinyl-like material that is fused with a furniture grade composition board. Using computer-controlled heat and pressure to create the finished product, it’s flexible, much stronger than the old laminates of yesteryear, and can be formed into different shaped doors, allowing manufacturers to create hundreds of exciting styles. But they didn’t stop there. New photographic techniques were developed to duplicate the beauty of real wood. This year, they even launched an RTF product that looks like stainless steel, creating a very attractive contemporary look for your cabinets.

In 1951, Raymond Lowey, the famous industrial designer (and one of my personal heroes) wrote a book called Never leave well enough alone. Apparently, manufacturers who make wood doors for cladding recently discovered this book because they decided to introduce replacement doors in new shapes and species of wood. You are no longer relegated to just oak, maple and cherry. Now you can clad with eco-friendly bamboo, walnut, mahogany and sapele to name just a few. Then the guys at 3M got together with the fabricators that made veneers and it was a marriage made in heaven.

So if some unforeseen disaster has caused all of your cabinets to deteriorate, now is a good time to investigate repair. As the procedure has become more popular, the cost associated with the process has dropped considerably, as has people who undergo refacing after it has also become more routine.

Modern science has made giant strides in reshaping people and kitchens. To quote the Wicked Witch of the West, as her face deteriorated, “What a world, what a world”! (Unfortunately, her face, along with the rest of her, has melted to the point that a transplant would not be recommended.) But she could have had a beautiful kitchen.
