Fifth wheel or bumper drive?

For many RV’ers, this question is a hot topic. For others, it is not even on the horizon. It all depends on the type of RV you are in and what you would like to move to.

For example, I’ve been towing travel trailers for several years. What will my next motorhome be? I’m thinking of getting a fifth wheel toy transporter. Why? I want the toy transporter for the flexibility in the ways that I can use it. I want the fifth wheel version due to floor plans not available on the bumper handles. But, it’s just me. This article is about what you want.

By the way, the descriptive terms you will hear can be confusing. A fifth wheel is a fifth wheel. That’s what people call it. On the other hand, there is no standardized term for the others. You will hear people refer to them as “travel trailers”, “bumper pullers”, “trailer types” or some other terms. For the sake of this article, I’ll use the term “bumper pull” because it better describes the hitch location.

Now that we understand the terms, let’s look at the basic differences between the two. The most obvious difference is where the trailer connects to the tow vehicle. The bumper pull hitch is, of course, located on or near the rear bumper of the tow vehicle. The fifth wheel hitch is located in the truck bed on the rear axle.

The first thing that becomes clear is that you will not be using a car to tow a fifth wheel trailer. The location of that hitch requires a truck. The bumper pull trailer can be towed by car or truck.

There is another factor about fifth wheel towing that requires a truck to be used as a towing vehicle. The fifth wheel frame design is such that it tends to be heavier than required for a bumper trailer. That extra weight needs the strength that only a truck can provide.

So why do people choose one over the other? One reason is the size of the unit. The longer a trailer is, the more likely it is designed as a fifth wheel. The smaller it is, the more likely it is to be a bumper puller design.

The main problem here is the stability of the trailer when towing. The pivot point (hitch) of a bumper towing trailer is a few feet behind the axle of the tow vehicle. This can cause the trailer to exert a lever on the truck. Longer units need a good anti-sway hitch to keep the truck and trailer under control if they hit you with side winds.

The pivot point of the fifth wheel hitch is on the axle of the truck. There is no way the trailer can exert influence on the truck if a gust of wind hits it. That is the main reason why longer trailers tend to be fifth wheel drives.

Another factor in choosing is cost. Fifth wheel drives tend to be more expensive than a bumper pull trailer of the same size. This is why most of the smaller and less expensive units are bumpers. They are lighter and less expensive to produce.

There is a big difference in the amount of living space you get for every foot of trailer space on the road or in the campground. A bumper towing trailer that is 30 feet long will give you about 25 to 26 feet of living space. The remainder of the length is the tongue sticking out in front of the trailer. As for the overall length of the truck and trailer, that full 30 feet adds to the length of the truck.

A fifth wheel uses length more efficiently. In most cases, a 30 foot fifth wheel will give you approximately 30 feet of living space. Because the hitch is on the rear axle of the truck, the amount of trailer hanging behind the truck will be more like 24-25 feet. The combined length of the truck and trailer will be 8-10 feet shorter for the same amount of living space.

Most fifth wheel trailers require at least a 3/4 ton truck as a towing vehicle. Most bumper pullers can be safely handled with a 1/2-ton truck. The main reason for this is the amount of weight that is placed on the hitch.

Most bumper towing trailers are designed to place approximately 10% of the total weight on the hitch ball. Putting that much weight on a hitch 3 to 4 feet behind the axle works like a lever to lift the front of the truck. A good weight offset hitch becomes extremely important as trailer size moves toward medium or large sizes.

The fifth wheel trailer is designed to place approximately 15% of the total weight on the hitch pin that is on the axle of the truck. That amount of weight, alone, requires a heavier truck.

So where does that leave you? If you already have a 3/4 ton or larger pickup, your options are wide open. It depends on which floor plan and price range work best for you.

If, on the other hand, you have a small car or truck, you’re pretty much limited to a smaller bumper pull trailer. Most cars and small trucks are limited to trailers weighing 3,500 pounds or less. Light trailers won’t offer many amenities. At the same time, they offer an inexpensive entry point into the wonderful world of motorhome travel.

It all comes down to where you are and where you want to be in the grand scheme of things. The tow vehicle will determine the size and style of trailer it can safely pull. If you want to pull something bigger, you will need to upgrade your tow vehicle.

The other main factor is, of course, your budget. It’s true that you can save a lot of money on your vacation trips by traveling light with a tent or even a pop-up trailer. Because hotel and restaurant costs can add up pretty quickly, camping can be a real bargain.

However, there comes a point where you are no longer camping to save money. You’re camping because you really enjoy the RV lifestyle. Let’s face it, a brand new 3/4-ton truck with a matching fifth-wheel trailer can easily approach $ 80,000 – $ 100,000. You can’t camp enough to save so much money!

So, as far as the fifth wheel vs. Flip the bumper, the bottom line is this: how much are you willing to spend? Most bumper traction units are at the low end to the midpoint of the scale. Most fifth wheel drives will start from the midpoint and work their way up to the upper end of that same scale.

Where are you and where do you want to be?

KIA Motors shows off its family-size hybrid SUV! KIA has come a long way!

While all the major automakers like Mercedes and Volkswagen are busy launching and introducing their concept SUVs, South Korean company Kia also developed and launched its own concept SUV at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. Kia Motors is known to be the South Korea’s second largest automaker after Hyundai. The company unveiled its Kia Cross GT Concept SUV, which was undoubtedly one of the most stylish cars to be revealed during the entire Auto Show. As well as being stylish, the concept is also quite practical, as it features a plug-in hybrid transmission, ensuring a safe position for the car in the future, should it go into production.

Now, one of the most important points to make here is that, unlike most of the hybrid electric SUVs that are appearing recently, the Kia Cross GT concept is a full-size family SUV. Yes, it also has a third row of seats! This means that the Cross GT will take a place above the Kia Sorento, the company’s popular midsize crossover SUV. Consequently, the concept is longer by 8.4 inches and wider by 4.9 inches. The SUV will face competition from other SUVs in the same category that includes names like Chevrolet Traverse and Honda Pilot.

Coming to the amazing hybridization principles that the concept uses, we must say that the vehicle has a pretty brutal engine. Well, we couldn’t find a better adjective for the growling 3800cc V6 under the hood of the SUV. The engine is perfectly capable of producing 333 horsepower and 291 lb of torque. – feet However, this is when the electrical hybridization system is not incorporated. Bring in the hybrid plug and experience the 400 horsepower burst of power the combination brings you! And if you thought this was enough, then the fact that this crazy combination is further paired with a crazy eight-speed automatic transmission system will just take your breath away. We would also like to mention that if you run out of gas and need to refill your tank, then you’d better find a service station within a 20 mile radius as that’s all the vehicle can get if it runs solely with electricity. .

The Cross GT Concept not only aims to better protect the environment through the use of a plug-in hybrid unit, it also does so by making extensive use of eco-friendly material for the interiors. Now this does not mean that interiors are lacking in class! Enter the cockpit and find all the luxurious innovations that the company has carried out with environmentally friendly materials!

Did we say something about the exteriors? Not? Well, take a look for yourself and then reflect on the fact that what a great job the South Korean company has done! With the beautiful grille and eye-catching LED headlights, the vehicle looks spectacular! Furthermore, the rear appearance of the concept is equally impressive. We also liked the air vents that are mounted on the sides of the vehicle. But the only thing that made us live with the concept is the multi-panel skylight on the roof, which incorporates glass panels in unique shapes. We hope to see the beast on the streets soon!

Tesla Model X: simply stunning and sublime

Quality and performance have remained the best part of Tesla throughout the years. The latest edition is the ‘Model X’ which is considered the most capable, fastest and safest sport utility vehicle. Being an uncompromising vehicle, it has a lot of cool features and quite a bit of smart ones. The expected price is set at $ 75,000 respectively.

Description

1. Design and safety:

Model X is designed in such a way that safety remained the top priority. The presence of a floor-mounted battery keeps the gravitational force to a minimum, reducing the likelihood of a rollover. The structure of the battery is such that it strengthens the vehicle against any intrusion from side impact. Since there is no gasoline engine, the large front trunk works as a great shock absorbing feature.

The Model X is a smart car in the sense that it continuously scans the nearby road through radar, sonar systems, and the camera. This allows the driver to obtain information in real time to avoid collisions. If the speed is high enough, the vehicle is capable enough to apply the brakes automatically in an emergency.

Outside contamination, bacteria and pollen are constantly filtered through a medical grade HEPA filter before air is circulated inside the cabin. There are three modes to adjust the filter level including a ‘bioweapons defense’, ‘recirculate indoor air’ and ‘circulate outdoor air’ respectively. This creates a clean, positive pressure that protects the occupants inside.

2. Hawk wings:

Falcon Wing doors are special and never seen before. They provide easy access to the second and third row seats even if the car is parked in a tight space. With just one foot of clearance on each side, Falcon Wing doors articulate smoothly. This allows passengers to enter the cabin from the front and rear. Interestingly, the top and side opening is so large that even parents can buckle children inside without straining, bending over, or even hitting the child’s head on the ceiling.

3. Seating capacity:

The Model X has a capacity for seven people in the three rows. Every seat is equally good, but those in the second row are remarkable. Each second-row seat is mounted on a single post and reclines independently, helping to maximize legroom, comfort, and storage space under the seat. In addition, the third row is also easily accessible.

When not in use, the third row seats can be folded flat. While the second row seats can be tilted forward, allowing more cargo space.

4. Engine:

Two versions of the Model X will be available to consumers. One is the P90D Signature and the other is the sportier P90D Founder. Engine specifications include a 259 hp electric motor that powers the front wheels and a 503 hp rear motor that drives the rear wheels to account for the all-wheel drive transmission.

The Signature version of the P90D has a top speed of 155 miles per hour and a range of 250 miles. In just 3.2 seconds, it can accelerate to 60 miles per hour respectively.

5. Fuel economy:

The Tesla Model X will prove to be fuel efficient as it is expected to perform well within the city and on the highway. Fuel consumption in the city is 88 miles per gallon, while on the highway it is 90 miles per gallon.

Therefore, anyone who owns a Tesla will find this version to be truly remarkable.

What are electric cars all about?

An electric car is a car powered by one or more electric motors using electrical energy that is stored in batteries, which then projects the energy through electric motors to the vehicle’s drive train.

The first electric cars appeared in the 1880s, electric cars were popular in the 20th century and early 19th century until common combustion engines were made for mass production and gasoline was cheaper to use than electric .

During the 1970s and 1980s there was an energy crisis that brought the electric vehicle to a halt.

Fast forward to 2008 when there was a renaissance in electric vehicle manufacturing due to advances in battery technology power, technology management, and also concerns about rising oil prices and not to mention the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Since 2008, many governments, local authorities, and countries have provided tax breaks, tax benefits, and government grants to help the electric vehicle market grow and reduce the aforementioned in an effort to reduce greenhouse gases and CO2 emissions.

Benefits of electric cars

There are many benefits to electric cars, a significant drop in air pollution due to the fact that there are no pollutants in the exhaust pipe is of great importance. Greenhouse gases and other similar emissions are greatly reduced, as in the case of the BMW I range, where BMW builds these cars with as many eco-friendly components as possible and their factory units are powered by solar energy, which reduces fossil energy and its carbon footprint to half of that very early in the production stage.

The other benefits of electric cars in 2014 is that we now have a new kid on the block in Tesla engines, these pure electric cars have a range of up to 300 miles per charge. Tesla is granting patents on its technology to other giants in the motor industry to try to push forward and achieve greater range for all new electric cars.

Other benefits are FREE road tax and a £ 5000 government grant for a new electric car. Also, if you live in the UK and travel an average of 720 miles per week this will only cost you, as of November 2014, £ 27, now that should be a benefit.

Plug-in Electric (Hybrid) Cars

During the 21st century, the greatest demand is for the plug-in electric car, as these vehicles have better range and are more practical for the average business person who has to travel more than 100 miles per day. Furthermore, due to the more well-known autonomy anxiety, the production of plug-in electric cars has been boosted since the beginning of 2008.

However, as of 2010 a new dawn had appeared with cars such as the Chevrolet Volt, Vauxhall Ampera, Mitsubishi Outlander in 2014 and the BMW i3 range extender in 2013. These cars have taken the form of electric car and generally They had a small capacity motor that works like a generator to keep the batteries recharged, ultimately giving you a longer range.

Another benefit of plug-in electric cars is that it can now hit 290 mpg, which as we know from pump prices, in November 2014 a gallon of gas would cost £ 6.00 on average. As we can see, this is a great reason to buy a plug-in hybrid car.

Charging of pure and plug-in electric cars

This is very easy today with the ability to charge from your own home also with superchargers in the UK and other charging facilities in the UK. By 2020, the European Union has said that the UK should have a minimum of 60,000 electric vehicle charging points, keeping in mind that there are only six years to go before you are in good hands to charge your car at any time, no matter where. . lives in the UK in 2014.

So the locations can be;

A home charger that sits discreetly on one of your exterior walls, in a shed, or in your garage.

From a charging station along the UK road network, to supermarkets, to Tesla supercharger stations, from fire stations, from other government locations to car parks, airports and anywhere else one might fit.

These chargers are dependent on the power unit, a charge can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours to fully charge your car, however the average time to charge a pure electric car today drops to 4 hours in many cases. If you travel less than 100 miles a day and sleep four to eight hours a night, you can have a fully charged car without having to go back to a gas station and waste time at the pump.

With a plug-in hybrid it is very similar, however you can obviously travel much more than 100 miles per day, in fact you could travel up to 1000 since these vehicles do not depend on being plugged into a power unit.

From zero to sixty in less than four seconds in an electric car

I bet you had to read that headline twice! I know, I couldn’t believe it myself. One of the biggest obstacles to buying an electric car for me has always been performance. Now we finally have someone with a vision to revolutionize the industry who is doing what no one else has done to date – introducing an electric car that performs like a sports car.

Martin Eberhard’s development of this cutting-edge vehicle is being funded by high-profile internet billionaires like the founders of Google and Paypal. This should tell you right away that this car is serious business.

The new battery-powered car will be one of the fastest production cars available on the planet that will hold its own with those from Ferrari and Lamborghinis costing five times what the new roadster will sell for. The company name is Tesla Motors, in honor of the Serbian inventor of the first alternating current motor.

The Tesla roadster gets its power from nearly 7,000 lithium-ion batteries, rechargeable, of course. There is nothing special about the batteries either, they are exactly the same batteries that we use in our laptops. In addition to going from 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds, the vehicle has a top speed of more than 130 mph and a range before recharging of 250 miles. The first model to be built will be a two-seater roadster, but they already have plans for a sedan as well. So how much does this car cost to run? You won’t believe it, less than two cents a mile! Say goodbye to high gas prices because this car uses ZERO gas.

Eberhard’s electrical engineering expertise is what has provided it with the knowledge to build the first high-performance electric car. He says he was inspired to create the car by reading about other auto industry revolutionaries, John DeLorean and Preston Tucker.

Rather than trying to invent a new battery source, he decided to go with lithium-ion batteries because he was involved in the computer industry and he knows that large computer companies will continue to work to make the lightest, longest-lasting batteries that he can get. of the computer industry and its use to power their cars.

Tesla Motors has gone from being a concept to a car that will be made in less than three years. The first cars are being built in a factory in England and will be available in the summer of 2007. The price of the first cars is expected to be around $ 80,000. Considering the price of gasoline, it will soon be considered a bargain.

Chicago Live: 2013 High-End Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Convertible

Ford Motor Company recently unveiled the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show and this has caught a lot of attention from the event audience as this model promises to provide almost all the features found in the Mustang coupe.

The 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500 convertible is powered by a supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 engine. This engine, which is capable of producing up to 650 horsepower, is also the same as that used in the Shelby GT500 coupe. Because of this, the Shelby GT500 coupe and convertible currently holds the crown as the most powerful Mustang ever produced by Ford.

Most of the auto experts who were present at the Chicago Auto Show when the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible was unveiled were quite surprised by the maximum power the vehicle is capable of producing. These auto experts expected the convertible to only produce a limited amount of horsepower, as it is equipped with a drop top. Most of them think that excessive horsepower could ruin the vehicle’s ability to take off and remove the roof while underway, but their guesses are ruined by what they’ve seen in the new Shelby GT500 convertible.

The remarkable features seen on the topless Shelby GT500 simply demonstrate that Ford’s vehicle engineers and developers were able to find a way to enable the convertible to handle the potential challenges that the supercharged V-8 engine could pose against the mechanism of its the ceiling. Obviously, Ford has used many modern components to deal with this condition and the results were evidently impressive.

But aside from the improvements made to the vehicle’s roof, Ford has also done a great job improving the overall performance of the supercharged V-8 that was used in the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible. The company successfully bored an additional 0.4 liters in the car. 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine that was used in the previous version of the GT500 and this allowed the 2013 model to produce more horsepower than its predecessor. In addition to this, the latest version engine uses the updated cylinder heads, new piston jets and the newer TVS supercharger.

Finally, the outward appearance of the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible has also impressed almost all observers who were able to take a closer look at the vehicle. Its blunt nose, newly installed LED taillights, and new headlight set made the GT500 convertible look more modern and sporty.

Make the most of your vehicle’s towing potential

When you have a truck with towing potential it seems like you are calling every time someone is moving, when someone’s kids need a trailer for camping and of course you wish you could use it to pull your own trailer, boat, caravan , etc. But are you really using your vehicle’s hitch to its full potential?

Determining the towing capacity of your vehicle

Surprisingly, perhaps for some, there is more to trailer accessory choice than one might believe. So if you plan to invest in a trailer hitch, take some time to determine what type you need and why it will benefit you. After all, with multiple kinds of hitches, as well as those designed for specific types of vehicle designs, knowing what kind of trailer and hitches to buy can save you time and money. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Class 1 – This is designed to tow items weighing between 2,000 LBs GTW (Gross Trailer Weight) and 200 LBs TW (Trailer Tongue Weight). It is suitable for subcompact and compact cars, mid-size cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans, and full-size cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and pickup trucks.

2. Class 2 – Designed for 3500 LB GTW to 300 LB TW and can be used with midsize cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans, and large cars, trucks, SUVs and pickup trucks.

3. Class 3 – This type of trailer hitch will work for items weighing between 5,000 LB GTW and 500 LB TW and is best used with mid-size pickup trucks, SUVs, and mini vans, and large cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and pickup trucks.

4. Class 4 – Designed for use in vehicles weighing between 9,000 LB GTW and 900 LB TW and should only be used with full-size cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and pickup trucks.

As a final point, not with regard to accessories and trailer hitches, it is recommended that when choosing a trailer hitch, it should match the towing capacity of your vehicle. While you may not need the additional capacity at the time of purchase, you never know when you will need a hitch that is equipped to handle the additional weight.

If “buying a trailer attachment or hitch” is on your To Do List, be sure to make an informed decision rather than a uniform decision. Talk to a local auto parts dealer or dealer, as well as others who have already made the same purchase, and learn about your options. Then get ready to have fun and work with ease. Before you know it, you’ll be ready for all kinds of towing adventures.

Aston Martin Rapide – The four-door supercar

Aside from its stunning styling and looks, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about about the Aston Martin Rapide. You could say that it is a competitor to the Porsche Panamera and Maserati Quattroporte, however the Rapide is priced much, much higher than its two rivals with a price tag of over two hundred thousand dollars. The Aston Martin CEO has called the Rapide the world’s first four-door supercar, a pretty big claim considering it’s not as fast as the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

The Rapide shares its six-liter, four hundred and seventy-horsepower V12 engine and six-speed automatic gearbox with the DB9, and can achieve a 0-60 time of around five seconds. The Rapide’s weight distribution, low center of gravity, and immensely rigid chassis combine to form a true four-door sports car.

In reality, the Rapide is more of a Grand Tourer to drive than a thoroughbred sports car, and the steering feels correspondingly light. However, unlike high-end luxury sedans such as the BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class, there are none of the meandering side-to-side movements you may experience when cornering. On Rapide, the suspension can be tightened even more for a very firm ride. Activate sport mode and you can increase throttle response and the six-speed transmission keeps revs even higher, making acceleration sharper.

The Rapide is the kind of car you can drive in all day, as long as you are in one of the front seats. Despite being a four-door, the rear seats are quite comfortable, although to be fair, they can accommodate an adult passenger in relative comfort. The interior is drowned in leather and everything inside the interior that looks like metal is metal – no cheap plastic trim to sneak in here. Most of the dash is in common with the Aston Martin DBS and, in addition to the rear passenger space, there is a surprising amount of trunk space, almost on par with an everyday sedan.

It is difficult to know exactly where the Aston Martin will fit in the market. Considerably more expensive than its main rivals, but without the performance gain to match the higher price, the Rapide is more likely to rely on exclusivity as its main draw for potential buyers: a limited production of around just three thousand means that prices and convenience will remain high for years to come.
