Are you in a tailspin with the choice of chicken breeds?

Choosing Chicken Breeds

When you buy your chicken, you’ll want to look for something that is lovely, healthy, and also alert.

Not the chicken that’s curled up in the corner.

They need to be scratching at things and appear quite alert, attentive and engaged.

If you are a first time chicken owner, I am going to go over a list with you of all the different chickens that I would recommend when choosing chicken breeds.

If you are looking to have chickens for the first time or even if not, you just want to add some really good breeds to your flock to mix it up.

I would recommend Black Stars, your black sex links your Reds production.

And I also love golden comments or cinnamon queens.

If you are getting chickens again for the first time or want to mix up the flock, you should add Buff Orpingtons to your mix.

Buff Orpington

When it comes to choosing chicken breeds, I don’t know of anyone who has chickens they don’t love or have liked or recommend Buff Orpington chickens.

They are a great dual purpose bird, they are very soft endless egg layers, although they seem to get brooding.

You are just a wonderful gentle breed, I really highly recommend it.

There are different types of Orpingtons, they are a great bird in my opinion for all these things I find desirable, especially foraging.

Since they love to go out and get fresh vegetables and pick up the grass, I would definitely tell them to think about Orpington as well.

The Black Austral or Black Australorp

They are known to be some of the best egg laying chickens and the cheetah the leghorns.

What I have found so far is that they are very gentle, just great chicks that stay together, and they are gentle with all other breeds of chickens as well…

They love to forage for food so they are not afraid to do their thing because you will definitely want to consider a bird if it is going to forage for you.

That means it’ll be less on your grocery bill, which is potentially good for your pocketbook.

Black Australorp Blends

When choosing chicken breeds these mixes are fantastic so you will definitely want to consider the black Australorp again, that is another breed you will find fantastic for dual purpose.

They are supposed to have really beautiful big brown eggs highly recommended by all farmers.

Slow-cooked chicken

Of all the eggs, they take on a beautiful deep terracotta color and are mottled.

They are also very good collectors and have a very good personality.

Although it’s fair to know…

They are quite docile, but are a little standoffish at times and want them to do their thing, but they are very friendly.

They do very well in the cold, they are a cold hardy breed.

The simmering pit is something every farm should have if they could.

Easter eggs

They are probably the number one bird right now in terms of people getting them, wanting them, and adding them to their home.

They are quite readily available, they are the new up and coming bird that everyone enjoys.

A lot of people really want to have the Americana too.

Easter Eggers can be a bit fickle at times when they like their space, that’s okay.

They give a plethora of color of eggs…

You name the color, you get it all.

Easter Egger’s mix of barred rock..

They’re fantastic, so if you get a chance to add a couple of Easter eggs, you’ll find that variety in your egg color is a lot of fun.

And you are really going to enjoy owning this breed too.

leghorn chickens

Some people don’t like horns on their legs, I don’t know why…

However, they are prized for their heavy, heavy egg-laying.

OK, this is not a meat bird, this is their heavy heavy egg coat, they tend to be a little fickle.

Once the hens have gotten to be about a year old they have become very calm and bore well.

They get along great with all other chickens too.

For the size of the bird and the amount of feed they have to have, they give an egg of a very competitive size.

And of course they are white, so it is very nice to have white eggs.

Your different dual-purpose birds give you Brown.

And then your Easter Eggers and special breeds that give you different colored eggs.

I know you are going to be able to find Leghorn chicken in your area.

Again, the Leghorn and black SAR Australorp are your top coats and just great to have in your herd.

Last but not least on our list here will definitely be the.

barred rock chickens

It should be easy for you to find lattice rocks.

And you will not be disappointed with these beautiful birds.

They are great egg layers, they get along very well with cold and heat, no problem at all…

And they get along very well with all the other chickens.

So I am definitely going to recommend the bard rock dual purpose bird to you, you are going to enjoy mixing them with the rest of your flock.

Therefore, choosing chicken breeds can be fun and a bit confusing.

But here are some suggestions.

Of course, there are many lovely breeds of chickens, it all depends on where you live and what birds you can get your hands on.
