If you are going to weld pipes and you are going to assemble, which one will be the best? Gas? Diesel? Propane?

A gas welder is the best option if money is your biggest consideration. A used welder (Makes a lot of sense in my opinion if you find a garage queen. This article is not about brands, but in my opinion I would go with Lincoln or Miller for three reasons.

Reason one:

Made in the USA. Yes, the Chinese are starting to do some good things, but they are NOT there yet when it comes to welders.

Parts availability. Just about every weld shop in every city will have parts for what lives in the bed of your truck.

copper windings. Copper and aluminum are used to conduct and generate electricity. Copper is superior. Because? I don’t really know, but I do know this: A 1980 Lincoln Pipeliner with copper windings will weld so smoothly you’ll think it’s ice cream.

What fuel will you choose?

Gas is everywhere and easy to come by. Is it clean. It’s not a big deal if you spill a little. However, gas has a problem: it is not as efficient as diesel. Cars are a good example. A diesel-powered VW Beetle will get up to 54 MPG on the highway. Exactly the same because gasoline will top out around 35 MPG. THAT my friend can mean a lot of money if we are talking about feeding a welder who is sitting in North Dakota working 12 or more hour days.

Let’s do some math.

Let’s say an older diesel Pipeliner uses a gallon per hour in average use. At $4.00 a gallon, that’s $48 a day. The same gasoline powered welder would probably use about 1.5 gallons per hour under the same conditions. 1.5 X 12 = 18 gallons at $3.75 = $67.50. The difference is about $20 a day. Let’s say you run it 300 days a year, so 300 X $20 = $6,000. And let’s say you’re going to use this welder for four years, so there’s a difference of $24,000.

What about the propane?

Propane is pretty cheap, and where you’ll be welding, it’s probably $2.00 a gallon. A gasoline engine running on propane will burn more fuel because gas has more BTUs than propane (and diesel has more BTUs than gasoline). Let’s say we are going to use 20 gallons of propane X $2.00 = $40 per day in fuel cost. OK, that’s a little less cost than diesel. Normally a diesel welder would be more expensive than a gas welder, but by the time you have a propane kit and tank, you’re pretty much in a dead heat.

Propane has another advantage: it burns super clean. You can stretch out your oil changes. All things being equal, I still think I’d go with diesel. Because?

Propane can have a bad habit of not being easy to get when you need it. It also always means moving the truck to another location to feed the welder. On the other hand, your truck will probably be diesel, so, one stop and you can unload the truck and welder.

WARNING:

Take your time if you are buying a used welder. Find that sweet queen of the garage that still has the paint on it. You’ll be glad you waited. If you decide to use propane, do your best to find a welder that is already set up for propane. Welders have to move to another trade for various reasons, and companies go under. Browse auctions and complete off-the-shelf kits. Consider all your options.

The liquid diet: how alcohol can destroy a diet

We have discussed in the past the importance of discovering the hidden fats and calories in the foods we eat. I showed how a salad, sandwich, or any other common type of meal can quickly double in fat and calories when the wrong ingredients are included. However, there are some things that some of us cannot live without. By this I mean our daily glass of wine, after-work beer, or fancy mixed drink with dinner. It seems that the allure of a cool cocktail (or two) awaits us at every walk of our lives. For the tea taster the problem is non-existent. But for the rest of us, drinking can quickly become a bulk-breaking addition to the diet.

The problem with alcoholic beverages is threefold:

First of all, alcohol stacks up and nearly doubles the caloric content of any kind of juice, soda, or mixer.

The average one ounce shot of hard liquor contains around 70-75 calories with some darker spirits like bourbon and brandy slightly more. Add a shot of liquor to a few ounces of tonic or cola and the calorie count is in the hundreds. And those exotic piña coladas or margaritas can be even higher than that. By any measure, one drink won’t ruin any diet, however, one drink is rarely a common thing…

Second, one drink usually leads to two.

The taste of a drink is fresh and satisfying. The second one is even better, and so on. Rarely in a social setting where alcohol is consumed does one stick to just one cocktail. Alcohol lowers our inhibitions, which sometimes leads to more alcohol, and therefore more calories. And after one more drink, it almost always ends in the worst case scenario…

Third, alcohol almost always leads to overeating and eating.

Alcohol and its effects usually set the stage for binge eating. With just two drinks, his body is looking for a heavier, more satisfying type of food—and you guessed it, even more calories. Almost anyone’s caloric cycle under the influence of a few drinks can turn out to be a hidden dietary disaster. It is almost certain that the binge will occur.

The fat mentality regarding drinking can lead us in many wrong directions. The best remedy for anyone who enjoys alcohol is to educate yourself on the caloric content of what you are consuming: most wines contain between 90 and 100 calories per glass. Most full-bodied beers contain between 140 and 200 calories per 12-ounce glass, while light beers contain between 100 and 110 calories per glass. And again, most clear liquors are around 70 calories per ounce, so pair them with diet soda or club soda for the “best option” of alcoholic beverages. The other best alternatives would be wines or light beer. Stay away from harmful mixed drinks and full-bodied beers.

Another important thing to keep in mind when it comes to drinking is to pay attention to how often you do it. The casual daily glass of wine or the few beers here and there add up. Establish a schedule to control the frequency with which you consume alcoholic beverages. Give yourself a night or two a week to have a drink if you so desire, so you don’t overindulge in these diet-busting pleasures.

Lastly, and sometimes most importantly, prepare for what you’re going to eat after you’ve had a few cocktails. However, make preparations beforehand. Have a healthy and light snack ready to consume after a night of cocktails. This way, you’ll steer clear of the more tempting after-drink options. In short, a night of drinking loads your body with a good amount of unnecessary calories. Do your best to dodge the heavier cocktails at the bar and the heavier food afterwards.

Tips for Managing Wet Hair with Telogen Effluvium (TE)

Many of the emails I receive from people struggling with telogen effluvium ask questions about the best way to deal with wet hair loss. When we get out of the shower or finish washing and conditioning our hair, that is when we would style it or style it if it was healthy and not falling out. But, when you have ET, combing through wet hair can mean you lose tons of it.

But, if you don’t comb it, it can dry out in a very unflattering way. Which means it can be unmanageable, volatile, or lacking in decent style. I recently heard someone say “My hair is quite long and I’ve had telogen effluvium for about four months. After washing my hair very carefully, I’m not sure what to do. Because every time I comb my hair or brush it wet, I find it falls out a lot more. This makes me not want to handle or touch my hair. But if I just let it dry, I have unruly strands that go everywhere. How can I style my hair when it’s wet? If it falls out a lot more every once I touch it? When I wait for it to dry, it’s too unmanageable.” I will try to address these concerns in the following article.

I came up with a regimen that worked pretty well for me when I had CTE (chronic telogen effluvium) and I’ll share it with you now. When your hair is falling out, it’s very important that you don’t pull or handle it too much. As you probably already know, just touching your hair will make it more likely to fall out. And, from a psychological point of view, it is important to avoid this as much as possible.

In my case, I would gently dry my hair as best I could. I would avoid combing or brushing my hair until it is completely dry (and would only do so when necessary). I would add spray conditioner to make it easier to manage. (Take care this is a light conditioner so your hair doesn’t look greasy.) Then I would very gently run my hands along the length of my hair shaft to get it set up nicely. Then I would put that same hair in a towel and put it on top of my head to dry. The act of collecting the hair in the towel would add volume. And getting him together first would help prevent him from going wild and flying. I would let my hair towel dry as long as possible. On a good day, I might just let my hair dry completely before removing it. If that wasn’t possible, I would towel dry my hair and then remove it once it was dry.

Now, once I got my hair out of the towel, it wouldn’t look so bad and any hairs that would have fallen out would catch up in the towel, saving me the hassle of removing worn hair from my clothes. Of course, there would be some flyaway hair, so I would smooth it out with my hands, fingers, or if necessary, a wide-tooth comb. This type of comb is very important because it does not pull as much. When my hair fell out a lot, I had to avoid curling irons or rollers because they only made more hair fall out. But this towel method allowed me some volume and style. And if I wanted wavy hair, I would gently twist the hair I’ve gathered up (sort of like a ponytail) and gently twist it before putting it on the towel. This would create some loose waves.

The important thing is not to pull wet hair. This isn’t a good idea when your scalp and hair are healthy and not falling out, but it’s a horrible idea when it is or when you have ET. Watching your hair fall out is bad enough, but accidentally pulling more of it can be almost unbearable. That’s why it’s important to treat your hair very gently, but handle it in a way that it looks good once it’s dry, so it doesn’t take a lot of work to get a nice look or hairstyle.

If they can’t tell where you’re going after a minute or two into your pitch, they’ll tune out.

Let’s take a closer look at the four basic types of speech:

speech to persuade: Every day we are constantly exposed to attempts to persuade us to do one thing and not do another. TV ads, political ads, salespeople, spouses and family members, bosses and co-workers all try to convince us to follow their particular proposition. Because of this, audiences tend to be a bit secretive about your attempts to persuade them. People have become cautious.

Your main purpose in a persuasive speech is to influence the thinking or behavior of your audience. For your audience to be willing to listen to you, they need to like you, respect you, and trust you. They need to be able to relate to you in some way and you have to give them a reason why they should listen to what you have to say.

speech to inform: This is probably the most common type of speech you will give and the most common you will hear others give. Your purpose is to teach your audience something new or expand their existing knowledge. It may mean exposing them to a topic or idea they know nothing about, showing them how to use equipment, or helping them learn a new skill. You could be explaining a new management system at work. Informational speeches cover many areas. Remember to use some humor in these speeches and try to keep it light. Informational speeches can be boring to the listener if the speaker is not careful. Think of a teacher or professor you had who was boring. Don’t do that to your audience!

speech to inspire: The purpose of an inspirational speech is to ask your audience to improve themselves in one of several ways, personally, emotionally, professionally, or spiritually. The inspirational speaker relies more on emotional appeal than logical appeal. You are trying to connect with the feelings of the individual listener. You explain why and how the situation is changing or why their current emotions, fears, or goals may be inappropriate or counterproductive. Inspirational speakers motivate the audience and challenge them to do more at a higher level and spell out the benefits they can expect if they do so.

speech to entertain: Conventions, dinners and seminars often include entertaining speakers on their agenda. Everyone likes to laugh and that is the job of an entertainer. Ideally, the entertaining speaker will also make a serious point in an understated humorous way. You don’t have to be naturally funny to give an entertaining speech, your job is to provide interesting diversion. Entertaining speakers typically do this by telling stories. Know who your audience is and match your stories to that group. A young audience will not be interested in what you have to say if you are talking about events and people from before they were born.

You have to be a showman when you’re giving an entertaining speech. If it’s supposed to be funny, then your attitude should be fun and light-hearted. Their main goal is to make sure the audience is having fun.

Warning: Make sure you know the details about the audience before agreeing to give an entertaining speech. These are often after-dinner speeches and people have been drinking for an hour or so. If you don’t have significant speaking experience and very tough skin, this can be a harrowing experience. I know! Even many professional speakers reject engagements that the audience has been drinking on.
