Casio CTK 496 is truly a rare find, with 100 preset songs that can teach you how to play the instrument with ease. It’s a compact replacement for bulky pianos or organs and is sure to become a part of your entertainment. It allows a polyphony of 12 tones, which makes it a more versatile instrument, since it can play up to 12 keys at the same time.

Compared to other electronic keyboards, the Casio CTK 496 keyboard has 61 keys: a very rare feature for such an affordable price. Its 61 keys are full size and therefore would not be a problem for those just starting to learn the instrument.

For me, I was captivated by the simplicity of this product and the very realistic piano sound effect it is capable of producing. Other than this, I found its sound quality to be comparable to other products of its ilk, although it may not sound quite the same as a $4000 keyboard.

The only problem I found with this product is that it does not have touch sensitivity, however this does not make it any less effective for creating good quality sounds. I think I might be exaggerating, since I have quite a bit of experience with musical instruments. Since this is so, I would suggest this particularly for beginners, although I still think even advanced keyboardists would find the Casio CTK 496 worth every penny.

The Casio CTK 496 keyboard can also be battery operated and surprisingly lasts long even on just 6 AA batteries. Since this unit is lightweight and easy to use, I think you may enjoy using this instrument as much as I do.

The tech media is starting to talk about the arrival of designer domain names from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (“ICANN”), which oversees the development and administration of Internet domain names under its contract with the US Department of Commerce Because these changes may raise significant concerns for our business customers, we’ve outlined some of the relevant topics below.

For several years, ICANN has been promulgating rules and soliciting feedback on the use of custom top-level domains (“TLDs”) (read “brand-specific” .[brand] gold .[industry]) to expand Internet real estate beyond .com and its lesser-used alternatives by December 2009. A guide for applicants has approved its second draft. ICANN solicited feedback from domain name stakeholders, including government, the technology community, existing domain name registrars (the database operators that market and lease the names), trademark owners ( i.e. companies) and the legal groups that represent them, such as the International Trademark Association. (“INTA”).

As of the end of January 2009, ICANN received over 1,000 comments, many of them highly critical of ICANN for moving too fast to bring this paradigm shift to market and for what some perceive as an exorbitant cost. Custom domain names of this variety start at approximately $300,000 in ICANN charges and setup fees, compared to the $35 annual fee for the typical .com, assuming it’s available.

For example, these custom names would allow an airline to buy .delta or Smith & Wesson to buy .gun, but is there a business advantage to this? Will this scheme produce an additional crop of suffixes that companies must defensively register as is often done with .net and .org? Plain counterfeits like .kom and .bizz are already prohibited under ICANN rules, but what process or authority will decide whether to assign .delta to the airline trademark owner or its faucet manufacturer counterpart; .austin to the city or auto manufacturer; .mayo to the clinic, county or condiment manufacturer? can .[your religion] be registered in the name of a non-member or fall into the hands of a group with opposing views? Religious leaders have already begun commenting. Do legitimate business applicants lose out to cyber speculators who then hold auctions among themselves? Does purchasing a custom domain name represent a “deal”, leading to marketers being first in line to purchase your .[brand] gold .[industry] as a back door to expand market share? Should risk-shy managers in this weak economy say “no deal” to an untested change that depletes already limited funds?

Part of ICANN’s risk analysis should include the effect a move to unrestricted domain names will have on the current list of 14 simple ASCII gTLD suffixes (of which .com, .org and .net account for 91% of all gTLD registries) and approximately 230 two-letter country code ccTLDs. Trademark owners have criticized ICANN’s process thus far for failing to provide safeguards or “rights protection mechanisms” to protect trademarks from malicious or fraudulent registration. In the past, for example, there have been dawn periods that allowed trademark holders the first opportunity to obtain domain names incorporating their trademarks. Many also question whether the considerable expense is justified, other than to help ICANN recoup its $13 million in additional expenses for Internet administration. Questions also remain about the effect this myriad of unique domain names would have on search engines. Security experts say keeping an eye on malware and phishing will be more difficult in various domains. There are conflicting studies available on the internet that come to opposite conclusions on whether new domains will be more or less susceptible to attack. More importantly, trademark owners will not only have to watch out for someone trying to register their trademark as a top-level domain, but also as a second-level domain linked to it, like delta.airline or macys.shopping .

As with all things online, we’re cautiously optimistic that the market will eventually settle the debate about whether new domains are worth the risk and expense. Based on most feedback, it appears to be too soon for business leaders to decide whether custom domain names are a deal, where the benefits outweigh the costs, or no deal, where exorbitant up-front costs and unanswered questions outweigh potential market benefits.

These large flies hover and buzz around cattle preparing to lay their eggs and start a new cycle for the fly. Horses in particular are favorites and the flies aggressively lay several hundred eggs along the leg and chest hairs of the horse’s coat. The buzz heralds the approach of the fly and subsequent contact of the fly with the horse’s skin, often driving horses mad. Jumping, shaking, and running to evade these buzzing invaders is often fruitless as the flies will persist until they can lay their eggs.

In order to propagate, flies need their eggs to be ingested by the animal, and sometimes human, host where they grow and develop. Safely contained in the host’s stomach, the eggs attach to the stomach wall and remain for 10 months. Here they are fed by the host and nurtured until they hatch into larvae which pass through the intestinal tract via the dung.

The resulting infested dung provides the next stage in the Bot Fly’s life cycle with the larvae now pupating. This stage takes about two months to complete, and like a butterfly, the Bot Fly emerges to complete the next step in the long life cycle.

The adult fly, resembling a furry brown bumblebee, flies off in search of a suitable host for the next generation… once mating is complete and the eggs are ugly, the fly dies and the cycle is complete.

It’s amazing how life evolves to perpetuate itself, but doing so can harm the host. The damage is usually minimal and more studies are needed to effectively assess the long-term effects, but mild damage to the stomach wall occurs. Necropsies reveal a pitted area in the stomach wall where the Bot eggs attached themselves. The stomach usually heals on its own, but in severe infestations it can cause colic, stomach ulcers, and even death if the stomach ruptures. Infested horses often look unsightly as feeding insects drain nutrients and blood from the horse’s system. The horse’s immune system is weaker when infested and has a greater difficulty with disease and winter hardiness.

So how do you prevent the Bot fly from infesting your horse? It can only be done by breaking the cycle.

In the past, horsemen and women used toxic deworming agents to kill the eggs from the stomach and special combs or knives to scrape the eggs from the horses’ bodies.

A more eco-friendly, earth (and animal) friendly product is now used. Diatomaceous earth is an easier, all-natural way to break the Bot Fly cycle. Diatomaceous earth, often called DE, is bad for Bots but good for Horses. Feeding DE to your horse daily will kill the eggs, larvae and pupae in the resulting manure and will also improve your horse’s health.

Diatomaceous earth is the skeletal remains of a microscopic creature. These creatures, called diatoms, were tiny algae from millions of years ago and left vast skeletal deposits on ancient sea floors. Today it is mined and used in many ways for a greener world.

DE works on Bot Flies in several ways. It first kills the eggs and larvae in the stomach by dehydration and then removes them from the system. Once passed, the DE will kill any pupae that hatch in the dung, as well as the eggs and larvae of any other flies. The use of DE will reduce the Bot Fly population in addition to the common housefly and deer populations.

The ED then supplies additional minerals to the horse’s system. DE is itself a mineral (silicon dioxide for bone and hair growth), but it also includes 13 other minerals, all of which are essential for overall good health. Trace minerals are calcium, magnesium, titanium dioxide, gallium, vanadium, strontium, sodium, boron, iron, potassium, manganese, copper, and zirconium. This supply of minerals stimulates the horse’s immune system and promotes good overall health.

DE also cleans the system. Dead eggs and larvae are removed from the horse’s digestive system with DE, and in addition, it also purges any grit or other waste not removed. DE will also kill other internal parasites and worms and remove them as well. A horse with clean intestines is a healthy and happy horse.

Horses should be fed ½ cup to 1 cup of DE per day. This will depend on the size of the horse, but adjust accordingly. A good rule of thumb is to feed 2% DE by animal body weight. Always start small and work up to the maximum. This avoids a great mortality of parasites that could cause anguish to the animal. Start gently and over 7-10 days gradually build up to full amount.

A WORD OF CAUTIONnot all EDs are the same. Food Grade DE is the ONLY safe for use on animals. Commercial or “pool” grade DE is indeed dangerous for use on people or livestock. USE ONLY FOOD GRADE DIATOMACOUS EARTH.

DE can be fed during fly and vermin season or it can be fed year-round. It is gentle on the horse’s system and the mineral benefits make it a stable staple. Once you start using DE, you’ll never miss this particular bumblebee impostor or his waltz again…in fact, the silence that diatomaceous earth creates may be the only music you want to hear.

The dark side of the Force rules the war in the marketing empire. They employ mindless clones to convey their messages. Only a few thinking Jedi stand in his way.

Because most of the marketing messages you read hit you over the head with their features (company name, product or service), or hide those features in expensive graphics. Or their messages are so bland and sterile: You’re fighting to keep your head from hitting your desk and saliva dripping down your chin.

Do they have it backwards?

No, not the other way around. They have it all wrong. Period.

Most marketing pieces start with company features, support it with more features, and close with even more features.

The consumer keeps scratching their heads wondering when they will talk about what they care about, what they want and what they get.
