Rediscovering brown rice

Rice is a staple food for more than 1.5 billion people. For many, a meal would not be complete without rice. There are more than 120,000 known varieties of rice. Although white rice is the most common and preferred, there is a lot to be said for brown rice. This healthy grain has been around since day one, it really caught on during the 1960s and 1970s when the more health-conscious, organic diet began to take root.

I’ve always been told that brown rice is better for you because of the vitamins in the husk. I tried this healthy wholesome grain when I was in my early 20s (circa late 70s, early 80s). I did not like the texture or the taste, I found, for me, that it was an acquired taste (like whole wheat bread).

But now, brown rice is making a comeback. Japan, a big consumer of white rice, is creating some interesting recipes using brown rice. Since writing about dishes served with rice and hearing about its return, I decided to re-explore this healthy grain.

My first positive experience with brown rice was at a high end Chinese restaurant that offered brown or white rice. I saw a bowl pass by on a tray and thought it was fried rice. Our waiter told us it was brown rice. He told me that his version is really good and he recommended it. Feeling adventurous, I thought I’d give it another try. The texture was wonderful! It was nothing like my first experience. I began to wonder if it was time to re-explore this not-so-new grain and the wonderful recipes that use it.

Brown rice is really just rice without the hull that contains the bran. This retains more of the vitamins and fiber. This gives it a more nutty and chewy texture. Like white rice, brown rice has several varieties. There are more than 40 different varieties, including short, medium, and long grain. There are also different levels of adherence. It has a higher nutritional value than white rice. It is full of fiber, oils, minerals, and antioxidants compared to white rice. Due to the outer shell, the cooking process takes longer than white rice (approximately 45-60 minutes).

There has been a lot of research on growing brown rice. There are several organic farms in California that specialize in growing this wonderful grain. These are small farms in contrast to white rice farms. Brown rice takes longer to grow and harvest. In the past, producers did not take this difference into account, hence the experience we had during the first introduction. Brown rice farmers are allowing their rice to mature longer. Giving the beans the opportunity to acquire their most subtle and rich flavor and texture. Changes in removing or husking the inedible husks help retain the fibrous layers of bran that surround the grain. Due to the new crop and gentle milling process, this produces a better tasting bean. Japan has also explored and created new milling techniques and cooking processes to provide a better tasting bean.

The cooking process makes a big difference in the texture and flavor. In Japan, several restaurants are creating new cooking techniques and revamping recipes to accommodate the texture and flavor of brown rice. Cooking this grain well can be tricky. The goal is to smooth out the texture of each grain or rice. This makes the cooking process longer. Of course, you have to be careful that it does not come out musky. Most packaged brown rice does not provide the best cooking method. The most recommended method is to boil the rice and then allow it to simmer until all the liquid is absorbed (approximately 40 minutes). This does not provide the best texture or flavor. The best cooking method is a combination of boiling and steaming. Below is the perfect brown rice.

1 cup brown rice (short, medium, or long grain) Kosher salt to taste 12 cups water

Rinse the rice 3-4 times under cold water and drain through a strainer. Bring the 12 cups of water to a boil in a large pot with a tight-fitting lid. Add the rice and continue to simmer uncovered for 30 minutes. Pour the rice into a strainer over the sink. Let drain for approximately 10 seconds. Return the rice to the pot with the heat off. Cover the pot with the lid and let it steam for about 10 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and season with salt if desired.

With its return, it is no longer a substitute for white rice. With the new husking and grinding techniques and the cooking process, this bean stands on its own. Claiming their own recipes that demonstrate their wonderful texture and flavor. Brown rice is not a side dish that simply takes on the flavor of food like white rice does. He is the star of his own recipes and plays a very different role. Good brown rice stands up to the boldest, meatiest flavors. It holds up well in soups, hearty stews, and aromatic stews. It can be fried in butter or oil like a delicious fritter.

I think back to the brown rice I had in the early days and compare it to today’s new and improved version. There is simply no comparison. I am inspired to create dishes using this wonderful grain and exploring new flavors and textures. When I do, I’ll post them on my blog and share my experience with you. I invite you to join me in rediscovering this wonderful grain called “brown rice.”

An “iPhoneic” journey

It’s not just Adam and Eve who fell under the spell of the Apple; there are thousands of Apple fans who simply swoon at the sight of the bitten apple on the back of the phone. The Apple iPhone is a religion for those crazy about these phones. These phones aren’t just called smartphones, they’re just iPhones and simply can’t be clubbed with the other phones under the umbrella called “smartphones”! Apple’s iPhones are as popular (or perhaps more so) than their creator, Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs was looking for a good mobile phone or tablet that could work with iOS, but found that there weren’t many models up to the task. So Apple came up with its own mobile device – the iPhone. It was first introduced to the world by its creator in January 2007. The iPhone 3G was withdrawn from the market in just one year. This phone was designed to only support AT&T voice/data plans, which reduced performance and increased calling costs.

Apple iPhone 3G was released in 2009 with many enhanced features. This model offered 16/32 GB data storage capacity and came with a USB port for connecting to a computing device. The next version of this model, the iPhone 4G, entered the market in January 2010. This phone had extensive updates both under and on the hood. A new video calling feature, “FaceTime”, was introduced in this model, which allowed users to make video calls. Another upgrade on this model is the option of 720p HD movie recording and editing. The other versions of this model are iPhone 4S and iPhone CDMA.

Just when you think nothing can get better with the Apple iPhone, the company introduced the iPhone 5. Introduced in September 2012, this model underwent cosmetic and hardware changes. Built on the Apple A6 (Swift) processor and iOS 8.4 operating system, it took mobile computing to a whole new level. Thinner and taller than its previous iterations, the iPhone 5 got a visual upgrade. The extra length allowed users to add an extra layer of icons. The size of the dock connector has also been reduced from 30-pin to 8-pin, and the phone came with a smaller adapter and cable. All these feature changes made it more convenient for users to charge and use the device. In addition, this version features the Apple-designed A6 system-on-a-chip, which speeds up processing and reduces power waste. The updated versions of iPhone 5 are iPhone 5s and 5c.

Apple didn’t rest on its laurels, but it did come back with the iPhone 6 in September 2014. The iPhone received a complete makeover in this model. Although it still had the aluminum back found on the iPhone 5, the phone got taller and wider. The position of the power button has been changed to make it easier to handle the larger phone, and the edges have been rounded to give it a classic finish. Going back over a decade, Apple has just released a handful of iPhones. It is a brand that believes that quality and performance trumps the numbers games any day as it remains the world’s leading mobile phone manufacturer.

Can I Buy Carbon Credits?

Buy Carbon Credits

The answer is yes – but it isn’t as simple as you might think. The market for carbon offsets has grown significantly over the past few years, driven largely by corporate net-zero goals and interest in meeting climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement. Essentially, these tradable tokens represent the emissions that an owner of a carbon credit has committed to offset by investing in sustainable projects or practices.

They can come from a wide range of carbon.credit projects, but typically rely on agricultural and forestry practices to avoid or reduce greenhouse gases, such as methane. They can also include other ‘co-benefits’ such as improving welfare for the local population, reducing economic inequality or improving water quality.

These ‘co-benefits’ are an essential part of the carbon credit ecosystem, and they are a key indicator that the project has a proven track record and is therefore of high value in the market place. There are a number of ways to invest in carbon credits, including through the voluntary market (known as the compliance market), the exchanges, and through fossil free funds and ETFs.

Can I Buy Carbon Credits?

The voluntary market comprises both end buyers – businesses, governments, and individuals that have made an emissions-reduction commitment through an emission trading scheme, and sellers. It is based on the principle of supply and demand.

In the voluntary market, there are three major categories of carbon credits: those that meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals; those that are traded under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM); and those that are produced and sold through industrial or ‘non-traditional’ carbon-reducing projects, such as forest-restoration or renewable energy.

These credits can trade in the same way as other financial instruments, via auctions on the exchanges. Some exchanges have standardized products, such as forward delivery or ‘backdated’ credits that are easy to verify and ensure the quality of the underlying project.

However, other exchanges offer a wider variety of products that allow a greater degree of flexibility, particularly for end buyers. They often have a greater amount of information about the projects behind them, which can help buyers determine whether they are buying dubious climate benefits or not.

There are also a growing number of exchanges and registries that publish’verified’ carbon credits, which can be verified through rigorous analysis to ensure that the emissions they are offsetting are truly offset, not simply moved around. Verified carbon credits are more likely to attract investment, while unverified ones can be viewed as greenwashing.

The market for carbon offsets is dominated by renewable energy projects, but there are many other ways to mitigate your own greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil Free Funds, for example, helps investors find ETFs that don’t include companies with investments in oil and fossil fuels.

Some companies are aiming to be completely carbon neutral by the end of 2020, which can require them to purchase carbon credits. These can either be bought from the voluntary market or through the compliance market, where they are capped by the government and must be purchased within the limit of their UKA allowances every two weeks.

Communication Manners: Good and Bad Ways to Behave

One of the basic principles of modern life is the maintenance of good relations between people and the desire to avoid conflicts. In turn, you can earn respect and attention only by being courteous and self-disciplined. Therefore, nothing can be more valued by the people around us than courtesy and compassion. But in life, we are often faced with rudeness, harshness and disrespect for a person. The reason here is that we underestimate the culture of human behavior and its manners.

Manners constitute a way of behaving, the external way of behaving, treating people, used in speech, expression, tone, intonation, body language, gestures, and even facial expressions.

In a society, good manners are considered modesty and self-discipline, the ability to control oneself and carefully and tactfully communicate with other people. Bad manners are considered the habit of speaking loudly, without shame in terms of familiar gestures and behaviors, carelessness in dress, impoliteness, manifested in frank malevolence towards others, in contempt for the interests and needs of others, to blatantly impose on others. will and desires of people, in the inability to control anger with the intention of insulting the dignity of people around him, tactlessness, foul language, use of derogatory nicknames.

Manners are related to the culture of human behavior and are regulated by etiquette. The label implies sympathy and respect for all people, regardless of their position and social status. It includes courteous treatment of women, respect for elders, ways of addressing the elderly, ways of addressing and greeting, conversation rules, table manners. In general, etiquette in a civilized society coincides with the general requirements of courtesy, which are based on the principles of humanism.

Compassion is a mandatory condition of communication. Delicacy should not be excessive or turn into flattery that could lead to unwarranted praise for anything seen or heard. There is no need to forcefully deny that this is the first time you have seen, heard, eaten and feared something because otherwise, you will be seen as ignorant.

What adds more value to a house? – Questions and answers about the value of the house

This article is for the average homeowner and not for people who want to upgrade “upper class” homes in prime neighborhoods. The things that add value to a house come in two aspects; one is the value of the home to a new buyer and two is the actual appraised value. There are different things that add value to one or the other, and sometimes both.

First, the things that add value to a new buyer are visual things. 80% of the sale is curb appeal. Houses for sale look a lot like humans if you think about it. We all have our own problems and failures, but we don’t want to announce it to our neighbors. Yelling at the husband/wife and kids is something we try to do around the house if you know what I mean. Selling the house has some similar features; It is the house that looks nice from the outside that sells first. Any minor defects within the home can be repaired once the buyer has moved out. Most people don’t want to be the one with the ugliest house on the block.

Another similar feature is that the newer the better. People like new trends, what is currently popular, and they are always looking for something better. Having a few of those popular items scattered throughout the house will bring an update, even if the entire house hasn’t been remodeled. How does it look updated and modern? Here are some tips;

  • Cleaning (most important)
  • Green lawn, trees. Trim shrubs and trees, plant annuals for great curb appeal.
  • If your kitchen cabinets look bad, consider painting them if you can’t replace them.
  • If your sinks or toilets aren’t white, replace them.
  • Light, neutral paint colors. Paint the ceiling lighter than the walls to add height.
  • Carpet in neutral tones and light browns.
  • Tiles that look like natural stone (if they aren’t already)
  • Stainless steel. Bronze or brushed steel fittings (gold is out)
  • Vinyl windows, energy efficient
  • textured walls.
  • The kitchen and bathrooms are the most important rooms in your home.

Creative decoration can be a great advantage. Get creative and make it look clean and tasteful – this will add the most value to a new buyer. Just keep in mind that the “general decor” is better. Not everyone likes that same decoration. I once bought a very nice (expensive) ceiling fan to put in a house. I thought it would be a great selling point as it was so beautiful to me; it was the first thing the landlord ripped off when he moved out. So do not overdo it and fall in love with your decoration.

Second, the things that add value to an appraiser and really make your home worth more are more structure and product based. Modern updates have little influence, but are mostly updated in a general way that makes the best difference. For example, if you replaced your old wood grain Formica countertops with a tile countertop, that would be considered an “upgrade.” Whether you used granite or ceramic tile may or may not make any difference. That difference would depend on your home, if you’re in a $500,000 home and you add ceramic while all your neighbors have granite, then your tile countertops would be a small upgrade. But if you live in a modest neighborhood where most other countertops were still Formica (but newer than wood), then installing granite doesn’t add any more value to your home than ceramic. A good example is seeing a really big and beautiful house with all the bells and whistles built in a neighborhood where all the houses were that size with minimal improvements. The value of that big and beautiful house will be less than that of one of its equals located in a better neighborhood. What your neighborhood offers will give you a great gauge of how far you need to upgrade to add value. Go a “little” further than your neighbors, going all out and beating them by miles won’t give you as much value as it sounds. Just try to think about upgrading generally, shop wisely, and forget about “brand name” purchases. 25 year old carpet and 10 year old carpet rarely make a difference in appraised value.

Then it comes to adding appraised value to a home, it will be limited to things like square footage, age of the home, construction or rebar manufacturing, etc. Within those bounds, this is the best way to add that value (yes, they’re in order);

  • Add square footage with an addition.
  • It has a garage or store.
  • Drywall and textured walls. (Get rid of the wood paneling, especially if it’s dark)
  • Kitchens and bathrooms are the most important rooms.
  • kitchens; new countertops, new cabinets (or resurfaced), new tile or linoleum flooring, etc.
  • bathrooms; good lighting, white bathtubs and sinks, tiled or linoleum floor, very clean toilet, etc.
  • New Carpet/Flooring: Wood floors (real and laminate) may have a higher value. The brand of the rug generally doesn’t make a difference, and neither does the padding. Details like fixtures, appliances, paint colors (neutral is best, not white), etc.

Above all, new paint has great value, even if it looks good, a fresh coat of paint can make all the difference in the world to a potential buyer and appraiser alike. It is also a task that the whole family can do.

Determining what adds the most value to a home will require a bit of neighborhood research, but when you’re done, you’ll be sure that your hard-earned money will be spent on things that actually add value. Also, we all love to save money and time. If you need a definitive number on what a certain upgrade might add in terms of value, then you should visit an appraiser in your area.

The science behind hydrogen hybrid cars: the electrolysis of water

The electrolysis of water in hydrogen hybrid cars occurs when an electrical current is passed through the water, causing the water (H2O) to break down into its two basic elements, oxygen (O2) and hydrogen gas (H2). It is interesting to note that industrial applications do not use this method of hydrogen production much, as they can do so more cheaply by getting it from fossil fuels.

The way this works in hydrogen hybrid cars is by taking an electrical power source and connecting it to two electrodes or plates (or multiples of two) usually made of some kind of stable metal like aluminum or stainless steel, then placing them on the water. If this cell is made correctly, hydrogen will form at the cathode (negatively charged metal plate) and oxygen at the anode (positively charged metal plate). Since there are two molecules of hydrogen for every one of oxygen, the amount of hydrogen produced in the water molecule is twice that of oxygen, and both are proportional to the electrical charge that the water passes through.

Using this process, electrolysis, for pure water uses much more energy, called overpotential, to cross activation barriers. Without much additional power, electrolysis of pure water occurs very slowly, if at all. This is because the water will not autoionize (decompose) very much if left alone.

Seawater is about a million times more electrically conductive than pure water because of all the electrolytes it contains, such as salt. Many electrolytic cells may also lack these necessary electrocatalysts. Electrolysis in hydrogen hybrid cars is much more efficient with the addition of some of these electrolytes, such as salt, acid, or base.

The history of electrolysis dates back to 1789, when Jan Rudolph Deiman and Adriaan Paets van Troostwijk used an electrostatic machine to produce electricity and discharged it onto gold electrodes placed in a water-filled Leyden jar. Then, in 1800, Alessandro Volta invented the voltaic pile, and shortly thereafter William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle used it for the first electrolysis of water. Finally, in 1869, Zénobe Gramme invented the Gramme machine which became an inexpensive way to produce hydrogen through the electrolysis of water.

Next, in The Science Behind Hydrogen Hybrid Cars: The Equations of Electrolysis, we’ll go into the scientific details.

12 Easy Ways to Support a Grieving Friend This Holiday Season

The holidays are upon us and it seems like a lot of people have decided to simplify their Christmas traditions this year. Instead of spending hours shopping and getting frustrated at the mall, they decided to spend quality time with friends and family.

In the spirit of simplicity and kindness, we’ve compiled a list of 12 simple and memorable ways to support a grieving loved one this holiday season. This list comes from suggestions submitted by our online community. So take a minute to check your vacation to do list and make sure you’ve added your bereaved loved ones to the list.

1. Don’t be afraid to acknowledge the loss.. One of the most important things you can do for a grieving friend is to understand that special occasions and holidays can be filled with sadness and joy. A message as simple as “I know that the holidays can be difficult for you. I want you to know that I am thinking of you.” it will let them know you care.

2. Listen and allow the tears to flow. Give your friend a chance to feel all the feelings he is experiencing at this time of year.

3. Let the person set the pace. Grief is a bit of a roller coaster with many ups and downs. Your friend may want to cry one minute, talk about funny memories the next, and the next they may want some alone time. He respects his needs and understands that his mood swing is not about you.

4. Encourage your friend to talk about the person who died. If you knew the person, share your fond memories as well.

5. Invite your friend to join your Christmas gathering. As family members pass away, traditions change and a loved one may not be able to spend the holidays with their family. Including them in your family festivities will help ease any loneliness they may be feeling at this time of year.

6. Send a card and be sure to acknowledge the loss. Don’t be afraid to mention the person’s name or include your own personal memories of the deceased.

7. visit the cemetery with your friend or leave flowers with a note for the family at the grave site.

8. Prepare your friend’s favorite Christmas treat or the deceased person’s favorite food. Every year I make my mom’s Christmas cookies to remember her love of the holidays.

9. Create a scrapbook of memories. Ask your friends and family to write down their memories of the loved one who has passed away and to prepare a scrapbook of photos and stories to give to your bereaved friend.

10 Make a donation to your favorite charity in memory of the person who has died.

eleven Encourage them to take care of themselves. Self care is very important to the healing process. Give the gift of pampering at a spa or prepare a care package that includes a relaxation CD, bath salts and an aromatherapy candle. If going to a spa isn’t their way of relaxing, find an activity that brings them joy and relaxation.

12 Don’t run for the hills. Many people are afraid to be around a person who is grieving. They often treat the grieving person as if they had a contagious disease. A true friend is one who supports his friend and allows him the space to feel all the feelings he is going through… the good and the bad.

Offering your support, understanding, and companionship during the holidays will be a treasured gift. Be sure to listen to your friend’s wishes and don’t force him or her to participate in activities that may be overwhelming. Be sure to only offer your support if you know you can really move on. And remember, it’s the simple acts of kindness delivered with an open heart that are remembered year after year.
