Living Finish Definition – The Facts About Copper Sink Finishes

If you’re considering a metal faucet, sink, or countertop for your kitchen or bathroom, you may have heard the term “living finish” or perhaps “organic finish.” Any metal other than stainless steel that is not coated with a sealer or a metal finish like chrome will acquire a “patina” over time. This means that the finish will change and evolve through exposure to the environment. Some call this “oxidation” (exposure to oxygen), but this patina process is also caused by other environmental factors that the metal surface might come into contact with, as well as wear and tear resulting from regular use.

When applied to plumbing fixtures, the question most often comes up regarding copper sinks. Faucet and drain hardware manufacturers typically address this issue with certain coatings that protect the metal surface from the environment, thus preventing patina or changes in finish. However, these types of coatings (PVD or other types of clear protective finishes) are more difficult to apply to a larger surface area such as a sink and require a more “production” like manufacturing process. The constant changes due to these myriad factors are appreciated by some and not welcomed by others. Personally, I like deep tones and earthy browns that appear over time. I see this as “character” and appreciate the uniqueness in color and tone between two identical products in different settings.

If you appreciate a lively finish, caring for and maintaining your sink will be fairly easy. If you want to avoid it, this is possible to a certain extent. There are several different ways to slow down the patina process. Applying a brass or furniture polish that does not contain polishes or cleaners can slow the change in patina in the same way that an auto polish protects your car’s finish. If you want, you can remove the patina from a sink with a metal polish or a mild acid, such as lemon juice or vinegar. Waxing the surface will preserve the shine, or the sink can be left untreated to develop a new patina.

We often feel that our clients fear a lively finish…or that this type of finish will require more maintenance. Our answer is always the same: if you don’t like the patina you finally get, you can always start over! Any copper or brass cleaner will reverse the patina to a shiny surface if desired. If left unprotected the aging process starts all over again and within a few weeks you will start to see the surface of the metal darken. Also, you can always buy a sink with a darker finish and keep the surface waxed. This will ensure the fewest changes over time. As far as maintenance goes, the occasional cleaning with soap and water is really all you need to do. Seriously, this is something you really need to add to your business if you haven’t already. I have made many of these myself and love them!

There are many people who use these two terms, VIP and VRD, as if they were the same thing. I see them differently.

I see a VIP day as being with a person for 2 to 4 or 5 hours. Your client is fully in charge of the agenda, so you, as their coach/mentor, have no plans to make and no preparations to make. I like clients to give me some of the topics they want to discuss. That way, I may have some resources that might be helpful to them.

These VIP days can be ‘stand alone’ sessions for a particular client or they can be part of a high-end Platinum program that people are paying you very well for. They are a great bonus or reward for paying up front.

A virtual retreat day (VRD), in my opinion, is with a chosen group and theme. I’ve done them on Niche, setting up High-End Platinum Programs, How to Get Paid What You’re Worth, and other topics.

I like to keep these groups small, usually no more than 5 people so everyone gets a lot of personal attention.

Basically, we turn the phone on and off 4-5 times during the day. Everyone calls on a bridged line. I teach for maybe 20 to 40 minutes and answer any questions. I give them their ‘homework’ and we all hang up. They do their job and I start hanging! Then we all get back on the phone at a certain point and go over the work they’ve done. Then we move on to the next teaching point and continue in this way for about 4 hours. It’s a quick way to learn or experience a lot instead of doing a 6 week teleclass or longer. People like that!

One of the most fun I’ve ever done, and should do again, was a virtual organization day retreat.

Some clients and I were lamenting how messy our home offices were, so we met on a Friday afternoon over the phone. Every single one of us committed to what we were going to do, from clearing desks to filing and deleting emails. Anything that had to do with the organization of your office.

We made our commitments, I wrote them all down, then we would hang up the phone. We took 45 minutes to do our ‘work’ and then got back on the phone and shared what we had accomplished. And we were all in awe of everything we had done!

We did this all afternoon and after we all got our last call, I was so loaded I just kept going.

Trademark Infringement Issues for Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertisers

Yahoo just announced that they will no longer allow PPC advertisers to advertise or offer trademarked terms.

Could this be a trend of things to come from the other major search players?

The new MSN adCenter (still in beta) states that you are not allowed to infringe trademarks within their editorial guidelines (see policy below).

However, Google is still taking a strong stance on allowing advertisers to bid on trademarked search terms, as long as the trademarked term is not used in the advertiser’s ad text.

Numbers to consider

Next to click fraud, trademark infringements are the second biggest concern for pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Of the total number of online searches, 20% are brand searches. That is, company-owned trademarks such as “Pontiac” account for 20% of all search traffic. While 1 in 5 searches for trademarked terms may seem high, most conversions don’t originate from trademarked terms. A study by comScore and Yahoo Search Marketing (Overture) found that most shoppers don’t search by manufacturer or product name. I’m currently working with an AdWords client in a situation where their competitors are bidding on their trademarked search terms. In addition to constant monitoring and reporting of trademark infringements being used in the ads themselves, the ad spend to secure the top positions for your ads has skyrocketed from an initial $2.00 per click to $15.00 per click. click. Additionally, the monthly expense has increased from $1,200 to almost $30,000.

I have to go back to my client with an estimated budget of $500,000 for the rest of this year to control the space for their own trademarked term. In my opinion, it’s just not right that a business owner has to spend over $500,000 to buy their own brand term that has already cost them millions of dollars to build. This is more than $500,000 in revenue for Google that is being generated by a policy that goes beyond the elementary terms of trade. Yahoo and MSN have recognized the unfairness of this policy and have taken steps to change it.

If we are unable to address this policy on a case-by-case basis, then I have no choice but to inform my client that we are unable to assist him further and that his only option is to pursue legal action against Google.

Earthquake insurance in California

When water began draining from New Orleans in 2005, we learned that most New Orleans homeowners did not have flood insurance, since they were supposedly in “low risk” areas. More than 60% of homeowners will need to rely on their own savings and limited federal assistance to rebuild New Orleans, at an uncalculated cost to homeowners and taxpayers.

Could that level of disaster, especially that level of uninsured disaster, happen in California? Less than 15% of California homeowners currently have earthquake insurance, due to its high cost, “it can’t happen to me or my house” factor, and coverage is not required by mortgage providers. The next big earthquake will result in billions in uninsured damage, but is earthquake insurance really worth the high cost?

How did we get here?

The state of California requires all homeowners insurance providers to offer at least one earthquake insurance (albeit at a high cost). Until 1994, it was widely available, but the high costs of damage from the Northridge earthquake caused 97% of homeowners insurance providers to withdraw from the state of California. In response, the California legislator formed the California Earthquake Authority to provide earthquake insurance.

What is the California Earthquake Authority and how does it work?

The California Earthquake Authority provides two-thirds of the earthquake policies in California, sold through its member providers such as Allstate and State Farm. An owner buys the policy through his regular insurance agent, but the policy is actually a CEA policy.

The CEA currently has about $7.2 billion to pay claims, which it says is enough to pay for foreseeable damages (Loma Prieta in 1989 had $6 billion in total damages). If damage claims exceed $7.2 billion, then each claim would receive a pro-rated share of their losses, unlike a regular insurance company, which promises to pay actual damages under the insurance policy. The State of California cannot help pay claims from general funds.

The policies also have a high deductible, typically 15% of the home’s value. In other words, your home must be damaged by more than 15% of its value before the insurance will start to pay out. Therefore, this insurance is not for cracks in the driveway, it is for significant structural damage to your home. The policy also pays for limited content ($5K and up) and loss of use ($1500 and up).

Why is earthquake insurance so expensive?

Insurance policy premiums are calculated based on probabilities: the probability that a house like yours in a neighborhood like yours will catch fire or that a driver like you will be in an accident. With data from millions of households, these probabilities can be calculated with reasonable precision. But no one can reliably predict the probability of an earthquake strong enough to damage your home.

And, as you can imagine, the damage from an earthquake, flood, or hurricane is widespread, potentially over thousands of square miles, rather than one or a few dozen houses, as in a fire. As such, the insurer would have to pay out zero claims or billions of dollars in claims – too much variance to reasonably plan or accurately quote.

Are we really at risk here in San José?

According to the USGS, there is a 62% chance of an earthquake measuring 6.7 or greater (such as the Northridge earthquake) in the Bay Area in the next 30 years.
