Types of business licenses and permits

The last thing you want to know after starting your business is that you broke the law by not applying for the correct permits for your business. Before starting a small business, you should pay attention to the regulations in your town, city and county. In most places, all businesses need a basic license, sometimes called a tax registration certificate. Aside from this, other permits and licenses may also be required.

Business licenses and permits are issued at all levels of government: federal, state, and local (city, county, or town). Depending on the type of business you are running, you may need to apply for licenses at various levels. For example, if you decide to open a restaurant in the city of San Francisco, you will need a business license and health permit from the city of San Francisco, a sales tax license from the state of California, and a federal tax identification number from the US federal government.

Not sure what type of license or permit you need for your business? Well, as usual, we’ve made it simple for you. Below is a quick checklist covering the most common federal, state, and local licenses and permits you may need to acquire before starting your business:

Business License – This is the basic license you will need to legally operate a business. If the business is located within the city limits, a city license must be obtained; if it is outside, it is obtained from the county. Contact your city’s business license department to apply. Remember also that you have to pay an annual fee.

Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) – Also known as a tax identification number, it is required for almost all types of businesses. Depending on where your business is located, you may also need to acquire a similar tax identification number from your state.

Land Use and Zoning Permits – Before you start your business, you should find out if the space you are going to use is properly zoned for the type of use that is planned. You may need a zoning compliance permit. Zoning laws regulate off-street parking, waste disposal, and the size, construction, and placement of signs.

Health Department Permits: If your business involves the preparation and/or sale of food, you will need a permit from the county health department. Please note that the health department will inspect your facility before issuing one.

Sales Tax License – This license is essential before you can sell almost any product or service in any state.

Fire Department Permits: Businesses such as restaurants, day care centers, or anything else that draws a large crowd need a fire department permit.

State-issued special business licenses or permits: You may need special licenses if your business involves the sale of certain types of products, including liquor, lottery tickets, gasoline, and firearms.

State-Issued Special Occupational/Professional Licenses: In many states, people in certain occupations are required to have occupational licenses or permits. A state license is generally required for auto mechanics, plumbers, electricians, construction contractors, collection agents, insurance agents, real estate brokers, repossessions, and personal service providers (estheticians, cosmetologists, therapists, and massage therapists) . If you are thinking of starting any of these businesses, you will need to pass the state exams to get the permit. Contact your state government offices for a complete list of licensed occupations.

Special Federal Business Licenses or Permits: You may also require special federal business licenses if your business involves investment advice, drug manufacturing, meat product preparation, broadcasting, tobacco, alcohol, or firearms manufacturing.

Licensing and permit requirements for small businesses vary from state to state; therefore, it is a good idea to contact your state and local government to determine the specific obligations of your new business.

Educational value of having pets in the classroom

Educational value of having pets in the classroom: Pets provide many new ways to learn in the classroom. Teachers can use these lessons for many things and topics, the list is endless. You can use animals to enhance many areas of education. I have some ideas and would love for you to post your ideas. Have you done this in your classroom? Share your experience.

Make a care plan with your students.

Who will take care of the animal? What a great way to teach them to take turns? Each child will have the opportunity to be responsible for feeding and caring for the animal, even cleaning the pets’ “home” should be a shared responsibility. Make a poster or bulletin board to be fair by giving each student a turn with the mascot.

Who is going to name the pet? What a great way to teach them how to vote and that their vote really does make a difference.

Ideas to use in the classroom:

Math: how much does the animal weigh, how tall is the animal, how much will it cost to feed the animal, use a measuring cup for food and water. The possibilities are endless.

Science: learning how to care for the pet, what kind of habitat the pet needs, what kind of food is best, what part of the world did this animal originate from? Let your students help by bringing things to the habitat. Let each student choose something they would like to contribute to the pet that will help them understand all that it takes to care for an animal.

English/Language Arts: What words would children use to describe the classroom mascot? They can make journal entries every day to use their spelling and grammar skills. Each day choose another topic about the animal that you can write about. Use some of the words for the spelling or vocabulary test. I’m sure you have many more ideas. Please share them in the comments section.

Children can learn social skills by taking turns caring for the animal. They learn compassion and empathy. Animals in the classroom also have a calming effect on classroom behavior. They reduce aggressiveness and encourage spontaneous communication between students and teachers. Even verbal communication with the animal is excellent. It has been documented that even children with special needs do much better with pets, what better way to help a child who is frustrated holding a furry animal? Not that you’re looking to add a trained “special needs dog” to your classroom or anything else, but snuggling with a hamster can still have the same kind of calming effect on your child.

Be sure to consult with parents before choosing a pet for the classroom. The last thing you want is a child allergic to a pet of your choice.

Have fun with your new pet and you will be surprised how well your children will love and care for this animal.

Weight loss success stories before and after

Gaining weight is very easy while losing weight is very difficult and complicated. To inspire you, my dear readers, I will share with you before and after weight loss success stories of some of my friends. Their stories will help motivate you to lose weight and stay fit and healthy.

EMMA’S REUNITED LOVE

Emma has shown me that having a fat body can really change. She made a remarkable transformation from fat to fit. She just has to bring the right ingredients and she will get the remarkable result. So what are the ingredients by the way? She will find the ingredients for one of my friends who experienced a before and after weight loss success story.

PRIOR TO

During her college days, she was pretty and sexy. After graduating, she immediately got married. When she got pregnant, she ate a lot of food. I want to say a lot. After the pregnancy, she gained weight. From 143 pounds, she gained 44 pounds. She never noticed her weight gain because she was busy taking care of her daughter. She was happy at that moment. One day, her family decided to go to the beach and have fun. They took pictures, swam and enjoyed the warmth of the sun. When they finally got home, Emma looked at the photos of her. She was surprised to see her once sexy body turned into a not so sexy body. She deleted the photos. Not only that, her husband suddenly became a bit cold towards her. Later, she found out that her husband was cheating on her. Emma felt very sad and insecure. She wanted her husband back and she wanted so much to get her body back.

DURING

Feeling so hurt and motivated to lose weight, Emma started watching her diet. She began by eating small meals frequently, increasing her dietary fiber and protein intake, as well as reducing her fat intake. Later, she also began exercising by walking briskly every morning for about 40 minutes a day. She also included aerobic exercises in her routine as well as cardiovascular exercise. Every week, Emma checks her weight to see if she lost a pound or so. She became so self-aware and wanted to be fit, healthy and sexy once again. Her motivation was so strong that she made it all the way. Her very heavy weight of 187 pounds she became 143 pounds now.

AFTER

After vigorous exercise and strict diet, Emma achieved her target body. Her strong will to change, as well as her great discipline, made her body more and more sexy. Not only that, her husband noticed her beauty once again and they met once again and much sweeter than ever.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The ingredients in Emma’s weight loss story were proper diet plus exercise. But don’t forget that the most important ingredient is dedication. It really takes a lot of dedication and perseverance to achieve your goals. That is the most important factor in weight loss. No matter what happens, you must be strict in following it and never give up. By following those ingredients, you might just be the next to share your before and after weight loss success stories.

5 secrets that turn ideas into products that sell

So you had a great brainstorm of what is going to be (or already is) a new product. You know that others like you will be so relieved once they see how you have solved that annoying problem. You developed the prototype. You found a manufacturer. He borrowed money to build a website (and it wasn’t easy to get) He got his dba and opened a merchant account. You even have a lawyer. Better yet, you are the first to market, no one has done this before. woof woof

You are proud of yourself and feel that you have a new future ahead of you. Health!

Suddenly, your email inbox is flooded with salespeople selling you super expensive infomercials for “just $60,000.” The call from the holdover publisher offering her space in a national magazine for just $15,000 was tempting. Have you started to wonder where the hell am I going to get this kind of money? Do you know how profitable one option would be over the other?

Can you tell what type of marketing would be the best use of your money? Panic sets in when you realize you didn’t really think about marketing; perhaps you? You may have been dreaming about how different your product is and how it will make you an industry hero, but now the reality of reaching your customer can be overwhelming. I’ve always said that developing any product or service without knowing who wants it and where it can be found is a terrible waste of money.

Without a doubt, the most important question that any entrepreneur can ask is the following: How do I get my client to buy my product? And speaking of my clients, where the heck can I find them? After 20 years in the public relations business launching new products, I’ve seen this path of thought many times. I’ve met so many enthusiastic entrepreneurs, all of whom have really great ideas that solve real problems.

The truly rare entrepreneur, the one with the greatest potential for success, is not the one with the coolest mousetrap, but the one who has figured out how to get their product to the people who need it.
Are you a rare bird—or are you not so sure?

Do not panic.

You’re not alone.

Many entrepreneurs get to the point of having a product ready for sale and then fall into a debilitating case of overwhelm. He may be saying to himself, “I know my industry. I know why it’s important. My product is great! But I don’t know anything about marketing.”

This is so common.

The author of “The E Myth”, Michael Gerber, predicts that 85% of American businesses are developed by “artisans”; mechanics starting auto repair businesses or chefs starting restaurants. He says that these artisans spend 100% of their time doing the part of the business they know, but ignore the division of their time into business development and building operating systems.

So, are you spending 100% of your time making your product really cool, your packaging great, or your retail space irresistibly beautiful? When you start thinking about getting the word out to the people who will actually buy your product or visit your store, do you draw a blank? Is panic taking hold of your stomach at the very words you just read? Are you flushed thinking about how much money you just spent and realized that you spend 100% of your time on your product alone?

Does your mind spin thinking about how long you’ve committed to this dream?

Well, now that I have you in a hesitant. Take it easy. Take a break. Just get to the bottom of this and I promise you will walk away with a renewed sense of joy. The overwhelming will be subsidized; I promise. The good news is that the answers to the above questions are quite simple and will not require a much larger investment of time or money, but simply perform this simple exercise:

The following is a 5-step exercise that will erase any overwhelm you may be feeling, putting you in the driver’s seat with a specific roadmap to the Emerald City of success. This exercise will set the course for your future. Truly, without going through this exercise, there is no way you will be successful, it is that important.

First of all, take a pen and a piece of paper. Do it now. Read each of these questions below first. Then go back to the first one, read it again, and start writing down the answers as they come to you. Don’t edit your thoughts. Let the ideas go into his skull, flow through his shoulder, flow down his arm and straight onto the sheet of paper, without judgment or change.

This is important.

Let the ideas come out on paper first, then you can look at them later, change your mind if you want, but the key is to get them out of your brain first and edit them later; are here:

1.Who is my client?

2. Why is my product so perfect for them?

3. Where does my client meet?

4. What publications, TV shows, radio shows do they read/watch/listen to? Where on the Internet does my client congregate?

5. What commonalities do my clients share with each other?

So, now let’s see what to do with the answers.

Knowing a profile about your customer, even if you’re making educated guesses, is CRITICAL to giving them what they want and need. Most likely, you developed this product because you needed it. Come on, make some guesses about them:

How old are they?

What business are they in?

What are your interests?

What kind of communities do they live in?

What do they do for fun?

Who are your friends?

What professional associations are they members of?

It must be clearly stated why your product is perfect for your customer; especially before you spend another dime. People buy products because they solve a problem for them. Whether it’s a bra that eliminates visible bra lines on a slender past 18 girl, or a clip-on cup holder for cars like my Porsche that were somehow built without that fabulous little service, you need to know. And what you need to know now.

Think of this in terms of solving your client’s pain and make a list:

What is killing them right now?

What makes them tremble?

What makes them angry?

What frustrates them?

What do they complain about with their friends?

How can they save time and money?

What would make them smile with happiness if they only knew about it?

Those attributes become your “Unique Selling Proposition” and the foundation of all your marketing to your customers. Your job as an entrepreneur is to provide a solution to someone else’s problem. Try to get your list down to less than 5 words that you can use on packaging, press releases, and as an “elevator pitch” when someone asks about your product. So now that you know who your customer is, where do they hang out? What do they read/see/hear? What associations could they be connected to?

Where do they spend their time and money?

What do they read?

You can get creative here, and you don’t need to know a particular industry to answer this question. Make some educated guesses. For example, I’d say fashion designers probably read Vogue and WWD religiously. They probably subscribe to Daily Candy online and are alumni of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. They probably buy a lot and can be found in malls on weekends and at night to see what else is out there. They are passionate about fashion and most likely you can find them in any situation that has to do with it.

If you’re having trouble figuring out where they are, make a list of where they aren’t.

Using our fashion designer example, I would say that fashion designers are probably not skiing in the winter and riding bikes in the summer. They probably spend many hours at the mall and make it a hobby, rather than a chore. They probably aren’t at football games or gardening on the weekends. Chances are they don’t eat at McDonald’s and they don’t watch The History Channel.

Makes sense?

So why is it important? Because these are the associations where you can make presentations, the magazines where you ask for reports on your product, and the organizations whose websites you sponsor. For example, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising probably has speakers coming to speak to their students. They probably have a magazine aimed at their students. They might even have an internal program. Clever; instant access.

Now the last question really helps dig deeper into who your customer really is. The value of knowing the commonalities your customers share will help you determine where they spend their time and money, and in what order. Knowing the commonalities that your customers share will shape your marketing program. You’ll find out who your real targets are and if you have other customers who are potential buyers, but aren’t worth spending your increased dollars and time on.

Going back to the example of the fashion designer, ask yourself the things you guessed about her, what are the most common things they share? From the examples we discussed, I’d say the most common thing they would share is a subscription to Vogue. Second, I would say that they are likely to have graduated from a fashion school like the Fashion Institute of Merchandising or the Fashion Institute of Technology.

So now that you have all these questions answered, make a list of those customers and divide them into groups of those most likely to buy your product.

Sort them into a priority of three categories.

1. The first are the most likely customers;
2. seconds are somewhat likely;
3. and the third is a hundred possibilities.

Then match the commonalities with your target customers.

Now make a list of professional associations where your clients might be members. Get their websites. Call them and see if they have internal newsletters. Ask if they sell their mailing lists. Find out if they have any special events where you can come talk to their members. List the magazines your customers subscribe to and read. Go buy them. Flip through magazines and find sections where they might report on your product. Write down the names of the journalists who wrote those articles.

Make a list of your customers’ “loaves.”

Next to the “pains,” list the attributes of your product that ease your customer’s pain.

Now here’s how this all comes together:

Write a sentence about your product that includes the customer’s pain and how your product solves it. Play with it. Write it over and over again. Use different words to say the same thing. Eliminate all superfluous words. Above all, make it rich and very simple.

Federal Express’s USP was: “When it definitely has to arrive overnight.”

Domino’s Pizza said “hot pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less.”

This becomes your “Unique Selling Proposition” and the phrase you start with when you call the professional associations and media outlets you listed above.

There are THOUSANDS of other marketing things you can do to get your product to your customers, but if you start here, I promise you’ll never be overwhelmed again. When you know who your customer is, you will never be in doubt about how to attract them. Now you know what your customers love, hate and where they hang out; they will never elude you again.

As time goes by, you’ll refine your customer attributes, where-to-find lists, and continue to diversify your marketing programs, but for now, pat yourself on the back and put one foot in front of the other. You have lists, a roadmap, just start at the beginning and travel down the road. Success lies in educated effort, not necessarily innate talent. One of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes says, “Education won’t do it. Privilege won’t. Experience may not do it. Tenacity will.”

So how do you feel now?

Has the stomach pain subsided?

Are you excited for Monday?

Good.

Go get them Tiger!

A week of vacation in the Aegean islands with a sailboat

Endless hours on the beach, contemplating the blue horizon, the night sky and the stars. Early in the morning a cup of coffee, pajamas as a bathing suit and then plunge into the “big blue”. Just you and your partner, in secluded bays and yet on the most popular islands. Sailing holidays are a way of life, which however can be followed by everyone.

Let’s start our sailing trip from Paros Island. The advantage of Paros lies in the fact that Paros is located exactly in the center of the Cyclades with so many islands around it, making your Greece cruise vacation an ideal choice.

This gives you the opportunity to sail every day, no matter where the wind blows, making your islands jump in a dream.

There are so many options and so many anchorages to stay in even in very rough conditions that sailing is safe and enjoyable even for relatively inexperienced crews.

Day 1: Set sail around Paros to your first destination, Naxos. Depending on the weather conditions, it will take between 3 and 4 hours to navigate. Naxos is one of the largest islands in the Cyclades with great sights and many places of interest. Don’t miss the sunset at the ancient temple of Apollo, a few meters from the marina. The grilled octopus with “ouzo” is a “must” here.

Day 2: Today sail south along the west coast of Naxos, ending at the southern tip of the island in Kalando Bay. Half way we will stop at a nice anchorage, Roga, to swim and have lunch. Kalando is a special place. It is not a town, but it offers a perfect haven for the yacht. It is an isolated area with a long sandy beach and many kilometers of paths along the sea, ideal for hiking in the middle of nature. For dinner, a kiosk run by a local shepherd offers BBQ with only local products. Don’t expect luxury here. Without a doubt, it will be your favorite place in the end.

Day 3: Set sail from Kalando towards Koufonisi. A short stop at a wonderful place, called Rina, where you can swim inside a sea cave. Amazing colors everywhere. Koufonisi, by far the most beautiful of the small Cyclades islands, with many sandy beaches around. Rent a bike and tour all of them. Dinner at the “Capitán Nicolás” venue is out of any bargain, as is an ice cold mojito at the windmill bar just above the marina.

Day 4: If the wind is strong, stay in the area by visiting the nearby island of Kato Koufonisi and swim in the crystal clear waters, snorkel or go hiking. The area is very protected from the big waves because the huge island of Naxos to the north blocks the wind to make our life on board more comfortable. In the afternoon return to the same marina in Pano Koufonisi.

If time permits, we will set sail for Amorgos, the island from the movie “Big Blue”. Rent a car or bike here to explore the wild beauty of this paradise. Visit the famous monastery with the breathtaking view from your balcony and try “rakomelo”, the local alcoholic drink. Dinner at “Xilokeratidi” will be a memorable romantic event by the sea.

Day 5: Iraklia is another island of the “Lesser Cyclades” that is worth visiting especially for those who want to experience small, quiet, cute and isolated places, representative of the Greek spirit. So, after a short swimming stop in Antikeros on our way from Amorgos to Iraklia, we will end up in the picturesque port of the island.

Here you can swim to the nearby beach, snorkel from the yacht and walk enjoying pure nature. Dining at Iraklia means fresh fish and local taverns more hospitable than anywhere else are ready to meet your expectations.

Day 6: Antiparos, the last island of your sailing cruise. After a 4-5 hour sailing trip and of course after the vital stop for lunch and swimming, we end up in Antiparos in the late afternoon. Strolling through the small streets of the beautiful village, have dinner in one of the hundred restaurants and continue with a drink in one of the local bars. The nightlife here, especially in high season, is a must for everyone.

Day 7: Before setting sail for your final destination, visit the Antiparos cave. Nozzles are available just 100 meters from the yacht. Upon your return on board, head immediately to a pretty anchorage on a small island north of Antiparos with crystal clear waters. The evening has already arrived and the hour of farewell.

Is he "I need to relax" Stress you?

Most of us know that we need to relax more, take the time to rejuvenate ourselves so that we can be even more productive in the future. But how many times does the “need to relax” become just another item on your endless “to do” list?

To be “on the edge”, you are literally not centered, you are not in your spiritual center. ~Carrie Latte

Particularly for women, it is not unusual to see 28 hours of urgency in a 24-hour day. Everywhere she looks, there are people who depend on her: children, spouse, partners at work, all while juggling cupcakes for the school bake sale, driving carpools and volunteering at her church. Even as we age, we don’t seem to slow down. As grandmothers, we take care of our grandchildren and serve our communities with time and talent. Many women feel guilty if they are not really making something for others, instead of taking the time to love and care for themselves.

No one can achieve inner peace by jumping on it. ~Harry Emerson Fosdick

A very simple way to create opportunities to relax, without letting down our friends, family and responsibilities, is to create little ‘touch points’ that will very gently remind us to take care of ourselves.

Imagine you’re making dinner, helping the kids with homework they’d rather be wrestling on the floor, and the phone rings. It’s his boss, wondering why that urgent report isn’t on his desk. While he’s explaining himself, a second call comes in and it’s another parent asking if he can carpool to soccer practice tonight. When she ends the call, she sees her husband’s email that says she has to work late. The wrestling begins, the children are on the ground, the cat runs for cover, and you can almost feel the headache clutching your head in its hands.

Reaching for the refrigerator, he notices the Angel refrigerator magnet with the word Tranquility engraved on its wings. Do you remember. You remember to breathe. You remember that living with joy is not a destination, but a journey. Remember to be kind to yourself, knowing that you are doing your best, and your best is better than good enough. Your kids will be fine, they’ll get homework done, they’ll be fed even if it means stopping by the drive-thru on the way to soccer practice, and in just a few hours you’ll be kissing their sweet little heads goodnight. .

You remember to breathe. You remember the joy that exists in this beautiful life that you have created. You remember those things you’re grateful for, and in those short 30 seconds it’s almost as if touching that angel’s wing is like touching your own beautiful spirit. Like acupuncture for the soul, this small act of connection unlocks and releases and allows us to continue our journey renewed.

Sitting with a dog on the side of a hill on a glorious afternoon is to return to Eden, where it was not boring to do anything, it was peace. ~ Milan Kundera

Sometimes these touchpoint reminders can be accomplished with small blessing stones, carried in a pocket or laid out where you will pass by often; or with a beautiful tapestry placed in your kitchen or by the door.
