Paying for College: A Gift That Keeps Giving: Helpful Strategies for Grandparents to Lend a Hand

Adding the cost of college tuition, fees, and housing, this number can easily double. But paying for college shouldn’t require winning the lottery. Careful and coordinated planning by parents and grandparents with the help of a trusted financial advisor can help reduce the burden on families and their children.

Before grandma or grandpa writes a check

Enlisting the help of a relative will certainly take some of the pressure off. But before someone writes a check, he needs to have a serious discussion about how best to help.

Providing aid the wrong way can be detrimental to a student’s chances of obtaining financial aid.

Consider these strategies that will help the student in a financial aid friendly way.

Consider paying off student loans after graduation

Financial aid is based on several formulas to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Most of this is based on information provided on a student financial aid form about the assets and income of the parents and children.

Financial aid forms do not ask about the financial assets of other family members.

If you or a relative find yourself in the fortunate position of having extra money, you may be inclined to help. But providing a cash donation directly to the parent or student will result in an increase in reportable assets which will reduce the calculated need, increase the EFC, and in turn reduce the amount of possible financial aid.

And if a helpful relative comes forward and indicates that they will help, then the financial aid office will also reconsider the student’s financial need. Money paid to the school on behalf of the student could be considered like any other outside resource, such as a private scholarship that reduces the aid offered by the school.

A better way is to let the student qualify for maximum aid while they are still in school and then help by helping pay off loan balances.

Family EFC too high?

For those who know their EFC is too high to qualify for help, there are still options for grandparents who can still help. These options at least offer them some tax savings.

Tip #1: Pay the college directly

Since the aid will not be affected, simply pay directly to the school. Each grandparent can give up to the annual gift limit ($13,000 in 2010) to each student. This will help reduce the grandparents’ taxable estate and is an exempt gift to the student.

Tip #2: Establish a 529 Savings Plan

For grandparents who want to help with college costs, a qualified tuition plan offers a great option. Money set aside in these plans can be used for eligible expenses like tuition, fees, books, and equipment.

These accounts offer a variety of investment options that can be tailored to the time frame before the funds are needed. Funds grow tax-free and, if used for qualified expenses, can be withdrawn tax-free.

Grandparents can transfer large amounts of cash into these accounts without triggering gift tax. Each grandparent can effectively deposit up to five years of annual gifts which is currently $65,000. The assets in these accounts remain under the control of the grandparents and are not countable assets for the student.

Tip #3: Give the gift of prized possessions

Assuming Grandpa has long-standing assets that have increased in value, one way to pay for college tuition and reduce a potential tax bill is to gift these highly prized assets to someone in a lower tax bracket. This could be the child or the parents.

This saves the large capital gains tax bill the grandparents would likely incur if they sold the appreciated asset and used the proceeds to help pay for tuition or other expenses directly.

Tip #4: Establish a Charitable Remnant Trust

For those who are charitably inclined and want to help a student, grandparents can set up a trust.

A charitable remainder trust can be funded with highly appreciated assets that can later be converted into income-producing assets. The income that is generated can be used to help the student. Eventually the remaining assets can be given away to charity. This strategy helps the grandparents avoid paying capital gains on the assets and removes the asset from the taxable estate. While not an issue this year (no estate taxes in 2010), this will change in 2011 without any action from Congress.

Bat-Wings: The dreaded hanging arm skin after WLS

Gastric bypass surgery is just the first step that many morbidly obese patients take in total body remodeling. A residue of massive weight loss is the dreaded “bat wings.” You know what I’m talking about: that skin on your upper arm that hangs like bat wings if you open your arms to fly. Wave your hand and the bat wings will too. For some, after massive weight loss, there’s so much skin that it’s hard to find shirts with sleeves that fit well, and worse, it’s embarrassing to wear sleeveless shirts.

To do?

Exercise:

The first line of defense is weight training or strength training during the rapid weight loss phase. Many patients report satisfactory contraction of the skin of the upper arms when they have incorporated light exercise during weight loss. Biceps curls and triceps pulldowns are the best exercises to firm up your upper arms. Arm training requires minimal equipment (2 light dumbbells at 3-5 pounds each) and limited space. It should be noted that the younger the patient and the fewer times they have seen a significant change in weight, the more chances they have to tone and shape their arms with exercise. Now, that doesn’t relieve older patients of the obligation to exercise; it just gives a little more encouragement to younger people having weight loss surgery.

Liposuction:

The next option, but not very plausible, is liposuction. Liposuction is only suitable when there is a lot of fat and the skin is tight. Lipo sucks out the fat and allows the skin to shrink. This is not plausible for most WLS patients because they have already lost the fat leaving an empty balloon of skin on the upper arm.

Brachioplasty:

The last resort is the $5,000 arm lift called brachioplasty. Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the upper arm.

Incisions and Scars in Arm Lift

Scars are the biggest drawback of this operation. They will extend from the armpit to the elbow, along the inner side of the arm. This operation changes an aesthetic problem (loose skin) for another (scars). In general, people with very loose sagging skin are more likely to find this trade-off worthwhile. Those with a small amount of slack probably won’t want the scars.

Personal Injury Lawyer: How To Find Them

A personal injury attorney is specialized in handling personal injury cases: claims and settlements. A lawyer with many years of service can be advantageous, but what you should look for is his multitude of legal skills and, of course, an in-depth knowledge of his special case. If you have a long list of personal injury cases that you have handled and won in the past, all the better. Otherwise, find someone who already knows the exercise.

Finding a personal injury attorney may never be easy, especially if you don’t know where to start your search, how to go about it, and who to look for. If you live in New York, your difficulties may even be twice as difficult. So here are some tips on how to search for and find your personal injury attorney:

Legally Accredited Law Firms

Anyone would prefer a top quality law firm to handle their cases. And for you to find the best lawyers, you need to be sure that you are looking for law firms that have been legally accredited by legal law accreditation agencies in your country. Start by checking the official page of the State Bar Association and check if the companies you have in mind are recognized by the state bar association.

Official Pages

Many law firms in the United States have a corresponding official website. Use your favorite search engine and limit your search. For example, if you enter “Manhattan personal injury attorneys,” your search engine will return a million results. Once you are on the site, be sure to check out the history of the law firm. The downside to this is that there’s a good chance the websites won’t even tell you the percentage of cases they didn’t win compared to cases they did win.

interview

Finally, there is nothing much more convincing than a personal interview. After you have completed the background check, schedule an appointment with the law firm of your choice. Most of the time, a law firm will ask you about your case before deciding whether or not they would like to be hired. I know it’s backwards, but that’s how it usually is (although there are exceptions of course). In reality, there are firms that may not want to handle your personal injury case, especially if the monetary awards are too low for your standard professional fee. Although not all, most companies will want to get at least 20-30% of the monetary fee once they win the case. So, if you think your case can be handled without the help of lawyers and legal proceedings, you can. Many plaintiffs have been handling their cases on their own.

Motorhome trip to locate Gitche Gumee

Recall the opening lines of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “The Song of Hiawatha”:

Along the shores of Gitche Gumee,
By the sparkling Water of the Great Sea,
The Nokomis wigwam rose…

We wondered if we could travel by RV to Gitche Gumee, translated means Big-Sea-Water, more identified as Lake Superior. Our investigation pointed out that the scene of the poem could be about 11 miles east of Marquette, MI, 33 miles west of Munising, MI on Highway 28 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. So we loaded up the RV and headed for the Mackinac Bridge, also known as “Big Mac.” Once we crossed the bridge, we headed west and sure enough, our research turned out to be correct when we discovered the Gitche Gumee RV park.

The entrance to the RV park is across the street from what is 1.5 to 2 miles of beautiful Lake Superior beach. Lake Superior is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. We were able to witness many magnificent sunsets looking west from the beach.

The RV park sits on a 52-acre parcel, nestled in a deeply wooded strand of pine trees. Jeff Glass, better known as Ranger Jeff, created the park to reflect the area’s Native American heritage. Along with the name of the parks, the roads, buildings, and other features reflect themes from Longfellow’s poem. The log lodge is named Pau-Puk-Keewis, the “handsome storm fool,” who ran off with a white woman who liked Indian style.

Ranger Jeff was educated as an engineer and the park reflects his great talent for creating what might be called a little piece of Hiawathaland. It’s amazing to see him operate his 1946 Crane, that’s 1946 and it still works, lifting pillars and logs on his many projects. He will show you many tools that he has modified with his ideas, making them easier to use and more productive.

There is another side to Ranger Jeff’s talent that really amazes RVers and Campers. Inside the park you will find hand-carved stones that are unique. Both “Miskodeed, the spring beauty” and Pau-Puk-Kee-wis, the handsome Yenadize are carved in stone. Some of the other treats are The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, treats of presidents, Indian chiefs, and a mini Mount Rushmore. Out of all the cravings our favorite is the 10 ton marble rock from “The Last of the Mohicans”.

Whether you’re a Rver or a camper, be sure to leave time in your itinerary to speak with Ranger Jeff and learn about his accomplishments and travels. You will be amazed and captivated by some of his adventures.

We don’t want to leave you with the wrong impression that traveling or camping at Giche Gumee RV Park is difficult. It really isn’t, as ranger Jeff has provided cable, WiFi, and many other amenities for his guests. One of Ranger Jeff’s favorite sayings is that RV travel and camping is “roughing it smoothly” at Gitche Gumee RV Park

Pets

Importance of pet supplies

The percentage of American households that own a pet has increased from 56% in 1988 to 62% in 2008, according to figures provided by the American Pet Products Association or APPA. The growth in the number of households is accompanied by increased spending on pet supplies and other items. American households are expected to spend $50.84 billion on their pets in 2011. This amount includes spending on food, supplies, over-the-counter medications, veterinary care, pet purchase and care costs. Taking care of a pet involves spending on the purchase of a wide range of pet supplies including food, clothing, medicine, etc.

Need for pet supplies

Pets are just like any other member of the family and they need many supplies including food, medicine, clothes or houses, shampoos and washing soaps, etc. All pet owners like to provide the best of supplies for their pet. This means buying food and other products of the highest quality to ensure that the pet stays healthy and grows according to its age. The best way to buy good quality pet food is to contact specialized pharmacies that deal in household products.

According to statistics cited by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the average cost of basic food, supplies, medical care, and training for a dog or cat is $700 to $875 a year. You can purchase good quality pet supplies at discounted prices from various online pharmacies that focus on selling supplies of all types and price ranges.

Types of pet supplies

Whether you have a cat, dog, horse, or any other animal in the home, you’ll need to shop for certain essential food staples and other items on a regular basis. In addition, products that help you groom and train your pets are also essential. There are several types of innovative supplies available on the market and they are meant to make it easy to take good care of your pet.

While some pet supplies are common to all animals, there are others that are specific to certain animals. Supplies can be broadly classified into:

  • training products
  • Personal care products
  • essential foods
  • Feed and water containers
  • Cleaning products
  • Food supplements
  • Pet carriers and houses
  • Pet toys and beds
  • Health care products
  • Pet Care Books and CDs
  • Pet clothing and collars

In addition to these pet supplies, you’ll likely spend on vet visits and pet medications to treat some common allergies and infections. Medicines to treat common problems such as fever, itching, hair loss, ticks, cancer, rabies, dysentery, tumors, worms, etc. they can be treated by purchasing brand-name or generic medications at a pet pharmacy.

Buying pet products from a specialty store or pharmacy is very beneficial because their staff can advise you on the right kind of products. You can also check the usefulness or effectiveness of a home product of your choice. These pharmacies also guide you on the correct dosage and procedure to use a medication or treatment for your pet.

Rentals and apartments: 6 tips to find one on a budget

If you or someone you know has experience renting an apartment, know that it’s not hard to find one. However, if you are completely new to this, you may not be able to search for good apartments and rentals. Here are some tips that can make choosing an apartment easier. Keep reading to know more.

1. Get roommates

If you’re on a budget, you can have a few people share the space with you. For example, if an apartment costs $800 per month, you can share it with two people. And this will split the cost equally between the two roommates.

2. Avoid apartment hunting during moving seasons

Although the availability of units increases in the high season, the increased demand results in higher rental prices. Therefore, it is best to start your search when the season is “off”. During this time, you will be able to find a better deal and negotiate a better deal.

3. Ask the right questions

Before you apply, make sure you are aware of the ins and outs of the apartment. Find out if the landlord charges an additional price for having pets or using the parking space. Typically, pet fees can range from $15 to $50 per month.

Likewise, parking can cost between $40 and $100. However, garage parking costs much more. Other questions are related to public services, such as insurance. The reason is that insurance costs a lot of money.

4. Try new apartment buildings

Search for a newly built apartment in your area. If you think you can’t afford to live in a new apartment, you should think again. Most new buildings offer great move-in deals, like a full month’s rent. Apart from this, it also includes some extra benefits like gyms and parking spaces.

Depending on your budget, the benefits can add up to a hefty amount you would pay each month. For example, if you want to save money, you can cancel your gym membership to save another $50 per month.

5. Consider mid-floor apartments

Rental prices can be high for apartments that are in the higher or lower levels. The reason is that people love to opt for apartments that allow them to enjoy great views through the windows.

If you don’t care much about views and don’t mind taking the stairs, you can save a few more bucks.

6. Seize the opportunity the moment it arrives

Rental prices often keep changing on a daily basis. If you come across a lovely place that doesn’t charge much, you should be quick and go for it. Make sure the leasing agent knows that he is serious. Therefore, he may want to send the request to him without wasting any time.

Hopefully, these 6 tips will help you choose the best apartment to meet your needs. Be sure to consider all the tips given in this article.

Why it is easy to control people when they are afraid: the same in private life as in politics

I wonder why people today think they are better than those of old, when those same people are the ones who fully understood the ramifications of human cloning; they were fully aware that allowing cloning to take root would allow doppelgangers to roam freely among us.

Trump’s power motivation and his admiration for Putin place him in the line of the worst dictators this world has ever seen; he stalks for control and craves hidden power, both of which align well with the self-centered ambitions of a tyrant.

Donald is an empty man, extremely anxious and hungry to see the victory of his cause; he watches the successes of dictators such as Putin and Jong-un with great interest, and does not seem to care at all about their affiliations and theoretical claims and ideological constructions of his incitement to power. Either he fails to fully understand the distinction between democracy and dictatorship, or he has a deeper insight into both than most of us are aware of. He calls to question his vision of the government and his ambition for power.

While we can respectfully agree to disagree, we have to ask why some people think being authoritarian is desirable while also fighting for a system of government that encompasses the right to liberty.

On the one hand, a democracy itself offers checks and balances, while on the other hand, a dictatorship loses those very freedoms and rights to express concerns. Without a doubt, Putin and Jong-un indulge in the necessary evil of illiteracy among their people… at the expense of democracy, freedom and peace… Therefore, it is necessary to educate those who need knowledge and provide them with the opportunity to understand the difference, completely.

Of course, we as a people have genuine objections and differing views of how things are done in Washington these days, emulating tyranny certainly places us in a backwards nod, many who came before us have died. trying to break free.

The custom that modernity renews comes to modern man from the creators of the Commonwealth, ancient men of strong religious convictions and hearts, faithful men who erected their bureaucratic fabric as a sanctuary in which the word of God was worshiped.

The fundamental with powerful facts, the need to learn and understand the distinction between working and being worked, can be interpreted in many different ways, languages… depending on the mental capacity of each one and the country of origin.

To work and to be worked are two words with very different meanings; to work means civilization, while being worked can only mean one thing: degradation. All forms of physical labor are honorable, and idleness in all its forms is shameful…

Ghajini movie review

Boouuuuuu! The-man-who-cannot-do-evil has messed it up. Maane tu yaa maane naa, Ghajini is a step back for the man who made Taare Zameen Par. Aamir Khan, you didn’t need to do this. Especially not now. I hope the members of the Academy don’t get a print or a copy of his new movie. Otherwise, they are bound to have short-term memory loss about India’s chances at the Oscars this year.

Isn’t it ironic that the movie that changed the way movies were made in Hollywood has become a 180-minute showcase of early movie-making in Bollywood? The mother of all mind-bending, Christopher Nolan’s cult classic Memento, has been reduced to a vegetable, a word they forgot to translate from the original. What hurts the most is not the inspiration but the total lack of intelligence of the script.

Incredible as it sounds, coming from the little big man, Ghajini is nothing more than a B-grade masala revenge drama from the 80s. The ones where the dying man whispers the villain’s name to the hero just before he disappears. Or where the flashback dissolved into the pages of a diary. Or where the villain and his jovial men with flowerpot hairstyles walked the streets with metal fences. In fact, there are so many of those bars that we wonder how a steel company didn’t make the brand linkage list.

Ghajini’s trump card is, of course, the Memento bit: Aamir’s Sanjay suffers from anterograde amnesia. He can remember things for only about 15 minutes and is reminded of this every 15 seconds. Yes, that is the main problem of the film. Not only does it simplify the proceedings, but it makes its audience dumb, explaining the same thing over and over again.

After all, Aamir couldn’t understand Memento! So what if the tattoos on his torso are upside down to be read in the mirror? So what if he walks around with a Polaroid camera to click on people’s snapshots and give a personal caption for future reference? So what if he is avenging the death of his wife, he has a man to kill and he is aided by another woman? So what if the only twist at the end is another Memento flashback?

Yes, yes, Mr. Khan sweated until Mr. Brain became Mr. Body. But did he really need to do it? Maybe because of the promotion and marketing part, definitely not because of the movie. A little Uma Thurman could kill Bill and beat up his army. The roar in the “revenge rampage roar” should have come from within and not from those eight pack abs. Aamir plays it over the top, which suited Surya in the Tamil version, but he seems hysterical here.

Is there no redeeming factor through the three hours? Yes, there is, and the name is Asin. We’ve had a couple of really good debuts this year in Prachi Desai and Anushka Sharma, but Asin is the best Bollywood find in a long, long time. His character’s catchphrase in the film reads: “Kalpana jadoo ki chhadi hai… Yun ghoomti hai aur sarkarein badal jaati hain.” I don’t know about the sarkars, but if Ghajini wants to stay afloat after the four-day bank holiday weekend, it has to be thanks to Asin.

In fact, Aamir-Asin’s romantic hint in the flashback is the only time you’ll find yourself laughing and smiling. Aamir, as the business tycoon, is much more comfortable, but it is Asin who steals the show and gives the film its best moments: the first meeting with Aamir, the help of the disabled children, the Ambassador sequence . She is refreshing, easy on the eyes, and a bundle of contagious energy.

Ghajini’s irony does not end with Memento. In his own way, he is an antithesis of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. There, the common man disguised himself as a cool guy to woo the girl. Here, the cool (and rich) guy disguises himself as a common man to woo the girl. While Aamir’s everyman is nothing like SRK’s Suri experience, when the original chocolate boy hero says “I love you,” he resonates even more strongly with Bollywood.

Of course, you get help from the best people in the business to express your love. AR Rahman and Prasoon Joshi once again meet Behka, Guzarish and Kaise mujhe as passwords. Despite the South Indian feel, the extras strut around in magenta jackets! – Ravi K. Chandran makes the songs seem engaging, contrasting just enough with the very somber, very green revenge track.

That brings us to the title character. Pradeep Rawat plays Ghajini, the guy Sanjay has to “find and kill”. Unfortunately, Rawat (the Sikh pacemaker at Lagaan) does not deserve the honor. Not even Sholay was called Gabbar. And here you have the old school villain, with his rod fetish, mouthing goofy lines (Piyush Mishra dialogue) under his breath and doing his best to look evil. Jiah Khan is the other casting misstep. She is so annoying that she often uses loud background music to drown out her lines.

Ghajini got a U/A certificate but it’s not a good idea to take the kids. Yes, most of the metal action is offscreen, but the bodies lying around like something out of The Exorcist, heads turned 360 degrees, don’t make for a pretty sight. The action (Peter Heines and Stun Siva) is hands-on, but after Bourne and now even Bond, it’s again a case of having seen it there.

Surely, most of you remember December 25. But don’t be surprised if within 15 minutes of leaving theaters, you’re like, “Ghajini? What’s that?” Because as the bright line in Memento says, “you can’t remember to forget” the movie.

Business

What is a brand?

At one time or another, we’ve all seen a product or company name with a little R in a circle floating next to it. You’ve probably wondered what this R symbol actually stands for and how exactly it got there in the first place. Most people will tell you that it means something like “registered”, but that’s only a small part of the meaning behind the circled R.

It is correct that this symbol implies the term registered, but registered with whom and how?

A “trademark”, or ®, refers to a name, slogan or logo that has been officially registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Registering a trademark is beneficial to a company because it publicly states that their trademark is registered with the USPTO and therefore they have exclusive rights to that name within their industry. This means that if your business was trademarked and you found another business of a similar nature using your name or logo, *you would probably have a legal right to use your name!

Every time a person applies for a trademark, the USPTO cross-references their name and/or design for similarities. ONLY among federally registered or pending trademarks. The USPTO search is not found in the U.S. national common law AND state trademark databases! Because the USPTO protects names in this way, you are not at risk of being used and possibly tarnish the reputation of the company you worked so hard to build!

Once you have applied for your trademark, the USPTO will consider it a pending trademark for up to 18 months. This is one of the many reasons why it is important to apply for your trademark sooner rather than later. The sooner you apply, the sooner you’ll be doing business under a registered and protected name!

* This depends on whether the name is actually available at the time of submission. In other words, was there a prior federal or state trademark? Was there an earlier use of the name in Common-Law?
