How Workers’ Compensation Rates Affect You and Your Company

Workers’ compensation is regulated at the state level, which means everything is standardized and everyone pays the same rate as everyone else. Right? Well, of course that is not the case. There are a number of factors that affect your own coverage, how much you pay, and even how easy or difficult it is for you to get your coverage.

At first, the amount you pay and your ability to get workers’ compensation coverage is determined by factors like your industry classification, whether you’re a new or established business. Depending on what state you’re in and how many employees you have, it also determines whether or not you should have this type of insurance to begin with.

Small businesses can also seek the support and services of employee leasing providers to be part of their coverage, usually a much larger and better established platform. This generally helps reduce coverage costs.

All of this, however, and we haven’t gotten to the point of this guide, which is workers’ compensation mod rates, one of the most important variables in determining how much you pay for your coverage. A new business generally receives a modification rate of 1.0. All of this means that you pay 100% of the mandatory or regulated rate for your type of industry.

Of course, the term modifier implies that this number will not always be the same. Your rate may be reduced in subsequent years. The A.95 modification fee, for example, means you only have to pay 95% of the industry standard. The state and industry you are in will once again affect how, when and to what extent your modification rate can change.

Of course, workers’ compensation mod rates can also increase, much to the chagrin of business owners. A mod fee of 1.15 means you pay 115% of the standard fee. Such increase is generally based on the number and severity or range of incidents reported from the previous year or time period reported.

If your rate goes high enough, that’s when you may even have a hard time getting coverage. Different states have organizations or services that then specialize in high-risk or hard-to-obtain workers’ compensation policies. That might help make sure you’re covered, but you’ll have to prepare for the extra cost.

Understanding the mod rates on your workers’ compensation is one more way to understand how much you’re paying and for what reasons. Be sure to check with an insurance agent or broker licensed in your state if you have any questions about getting a new policy or searching for a better deal.

The Cultural Heritage of Han Jiang Penang Ancestral Temple

Without a doubt, Penang is famous for its historical buildings and beautiful temples. In Penang, you will see many beautifully designed temples scattered throughout the capital city of Georgetown. The Han Jiang Ancestral Temple on Chulia Street is one of the many beautiful temples in Penang that you can visit here.

Penang’s magnificent Han Jiang Ancestral Temple was built in 1870 when a significant number of Teochew Chinese from China’s Chaozao province began to settle in Penang. Originally, this Penang temple was called Teochew Kongsi and functioned as a clan association building, before it was renamed Han Jiang Ancestral Temple in 1935. Han Jiang Ancestral Temple is known to be the best maintained Teochew temple. throughout Southeast Asia. and has won the 2006 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Prize for cultural heritage conservation.

When you look at the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple from the street, you’re probably right to mistakenly assume that this Penang temple looks like any other Chinese temple in this island state. However, when you enter this magnificent Penang temple, you will feel as if you have been transported back in time, especially when you look at the temple’s well-preserved 19th-century architectures.

This Penang temple was originally built in a four-pronged gold quadrangular design. When the Teochew community in Penang finally prospered, an ornate Chinese-style outer gate building was added to this Penang temple. One thing that you will be interested to know about this Penang temple is that it has the largest entrance gate in Penang as compared to the other clan temple buildings in this island state. It is also one of the few temples that can have three gates instead of just one or two gates. This is because the Shang Di Gong shrine, the tallest of the Chinese deity, is located inside the temple.

Another interesting feature that you will notice about this Penang temple is its lack of windows. This four-pronged gold quadrangular design air shaft from the Penang temple is shaped like a gourd, symbolizing the holding of money. The absence of windows is believed to prevent money from escaping from the temple.

If you take a look at the huge panels on the main gate of this Penang temple, you will see that the panels are intricately decorated with the motifs of the imposing Gate Guardians, Qin Shu Bao and Yuchi Gong, with their unique golden helmets. When you take photos next to the gate and compare your own height with it, you will understand why the gatehouse is considered the largest gate in Penang.

If you look up, you can see the typical Teochew architecture reflected in the rectangular spiral crossbeams built on top of the main crossbeam. Take a walk through the outer hall of this Penang temple and you’ll see the beautiful altar dedicated to the patron deity of Teochew, known as the Taoist god of the north. There are also many ancient stone tablets placed here. Above this altar is a plaque written in gold letters.

The second hall of this Penang temple houses the Shang Di Gong shrine. You will notice that the large courtyard off the second hall is lined with granite slabs and has various plants such as pomegranates, lotus and bamboo growing here. As you look at the entrance gate, you can see the three carp statues. Meanwhile, the rooftop is decorated with two beautiful green dragon statues. It is believed that once the carp jump over the gate they will transform into dragons.

You can see three altars with incense urns in this third hall of the Penang temple. There are also ancestral tablets that contain the names of the ancestors and community leaders of the Teochew community. From the many ancient tablets placed here, you can really get the feeling that the Han Jiang Ancestral Temple places an emphasis on honoring the legacy of previous generations who made Penang their home.

When in Penang, be sure to visit this captivating piece of local Teochew cultural heritage. Indeed, you will appreciate the sense of history that this magnificent Penang temple brings to its visitors. Let’s make this wonderful Penang temple at the top of your must-see list.

How to Fix a Stuck Zipper on a Washable Futon Cover

One of the best features of futon furniture is the fact that the covers can be replaced or, depending on the style and fabric, washed.

Designed to withstand the rigors of machine washing, futon covers are available in a variety of prints, solid colors, and sizes. While these washable covers can be mixed and matched to add some variety to your interior décor, the main feature is that they are easy to keep clean. Unlike regular upholstery that may require professional cleaning, the occasional mess created by children or pets is not a problem with machine washable covers.

Typically, a machine washable futon cover has two large zippers. The entire cover looks like a large sheet made of denim or some other material and has a seam down the middle. To install, spread out the cover, align the mattress against the seam, and then fold the cover over to cover the entire futon mattress. There are two zippers, one in each corner. Close the cover and that’s all there is to putting a cover on a futon mattress. When it’s time to wash, simply unzip the futon cover and pull it off the mattress.

Especially after a few spins in the washing machine, the zippers on your futon cover can occasionally snag. Trying to get the zipper to work can be frustrating.

It may be tempting, but don’t try to pry open the stuck zipper because pulling too hard could inadvertently break the zipper tab or destroy the teeth. After the teeth have been coated, try zipping and unzipping the unit several times. This will usually make the zipper work more smoothly. If a candle isn’t available, a bar of hand soap works, though not as well.

If the problem is not “sticky” due to age, dirt, or other factors, a string or fabric from the futon cover could get caught in the fastener unit. Carefully remove any trapped material or string that is jamming the zipper. The inner fabric is usually what gets caught, so a pair of tweezers can come in handy to grab the material or thread. Gently pull any inner lining, thread, or other material caught in the unit to separate it from the zipper. A slight tug will work, as long as you don’t pull on the zipper tab. Forcing the zipper tab up or down will make the problem worse. Depending on how embedded the futon fabric or thread is in the zipper unit, the teeth may separate when the material is removed. Gently push the zipper teeth back into place and the zipper should work. It is helpful to check the length of the zipper and push the liner to prevent snagging in the future. Recompress and the problem should be fixed.

Although they don’t cost much, machine washable futon covers are quite durable and their zippers are strong. However, having a spare pair of futon covers can come in handy if the zipper breaks.

Lamar Odom – Why They Call It "The goods"

Lamar Odom is well known among basketball fans for his versatile style of play. What most of them will now know is that Odom was once given the nickname “The Goods” because that’s what he pretty much delivered during every game during his younger years. When he was a star with the University of Rhode Island, Odom would help lead the team to the conference championship and also gave them their first A-10 tournament championship.

Following his senior year in college, Odom became eligible for the upcoming 1999 NBA Draft. He was selected with the sixth overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers and would go on to have a very strong rookie season with the team. His stats of 16.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg and 4.2 apg were a testament to the kind of versatile game Odom was capable of. He was named to the NBA All Rookie Second Team for his efforts.

After spending his first five seasons with the Clippers, Odom became a free agent in 2003 and signed with the Miami Heat, where he would play alongside rising star Dwyane Wade. He, Wade and the explosive Caron Butler would help lead the Heat to the second round of the playoffs where they would lose to the Indiana Pacers in 6 games.

For the following season, Odom and Butler were traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. After his stellar season with the Heat just a year earlier, Odom would continue to be a solid player for the Lakers, but they would end up missing the playoffs during his first season with them. He would prove to be a valuable asset to the Lakers, as he helped lead them to back-to-back NBA titles in 2009 and 2010.

Odom’s size and athleticism generally make him a tough matchup for most defenders playing his position. He has consistently improved his offensive game throughout his career and has also shown good shooting touch from the 3-point line. He is also a very capable defender and rebounder, and his size allows him to effectively guard smaller players. Another often overlooked facet of Odom’s game is his ability to create plays. Odom is averaging 4 assists per game for his career and while that may not sound like much, his willingness to make the extra pass has helped his teams in more ways than one.
