Memory Foam Mattress Toppers Explained

Would you spend a thousand dollars on a new mattress if you didn’t have to? Purchasing a memory foam mattress topper can be a perfect way to extend the life of your mattress while saving money to buy a new mattress in one, two, or five years.

Nuts and bolts

How does memory foam work and why should you bother? This amazing foam was developed by NASA in the 1960s. They wanted better cushions for astronaut seats. Twenty years later, Tempur-Pedic began manufacturing memory foam. These days there are tons of companies to think about. Foam works like this: the little cells in the foam compress when you press on them. And unlike regular foam, they “remember” to stay compressed. Regular foam is springy and dry. It tugs at you, if you sit on it with bare skin. It’s not stretchy and feels wet, somehow. It also feels a bit sticky, but the texture is different, not abrasive like regular foam is.

Memory foam cells flatten in response to your body’s weight and heat. But they work independently of each other. For example, if you place your hand on it, fingers open, the foam compresses only where it’s actually making contact. This is amazing news for people with back pain. The foam relieves pressure points by supporting only those areas in contact with the bed.

dollars and sense

Now that you know how it works, here’s why it’s an inexpensive option, too. You could spend anywhere from $500 to a thousand dollars on a new mattress. What if I told you that you could spend $200 and have a better sleeping experience? That is the miracle of viscoelastic. A topper is a great choice. He fits over his existing bed and essentially has a new mattress.

There are even cheaper toppers on the market. You could walk into a Target right now and walk out with a $50 foam cover. It will last a while, probably a year, and you will notice a difference in your sleep. The reason I say it will last a year is that an inexpensive cover like that is probably only an inch or so thick and the foam itself will be lightweight. The thicker the topper and heavier the memory foam, the better. It is as you would expect: it will cost you more money. The thicker and heavier, the more expensive because the company had to use more materials to create the foam.

Stuck telescopic fishing rod?

One of the most frustrating things that can happen to a telescopic fishing rod is it getting stuck in a joint. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but is usually due to corrosion or dirt, mud, or sand in the joint.

Better safe than sorry: Try to keep the cane off the ground at all times to prevent dirt from getting into the joints. Wipe it clean before removing it so that dirt does not collect in the joint. If you have been using it in salt water, give it a quick rinse with fresh water as soon as you can after using it. It’s a good idea to put a protectant like WD-40, Tackle Guard, or a silicone lubricant on the joints. Be sure not to use too much or you may go the other way and prevent the bar from sitting up when you extend it, especially around the toe joints.

Now if you are unfortunate enough to have a rod jam (due to bad luck or mismanagement), there are several techniques to get the sucker unstuck.

1. The hot water technique

For hot water on the large side of the joint as close to the joint as possible to expand it quickly. Then after a few seconds try to twist or push the small side of the joint down. It’s best if you can do this under a tap where the water starts out cold and then gradually warms up over a few seconds, as this reduces the risk of stress cracks developing in the joint.

2. The technique of ice and hot water

If the hot water technique fails, try the next step. Do the same as above, but ice the small side of the joint to shrink it. This is easiest if you get some ice from your freezer, place it on a cloth or towel, and then wrap it around the bar and hold it while you heat the other side with hot water.

3. Lubrication

Try a penetrating lubricant like WD-40, CRC, or Tackle Guard. Let the joint soak for an hour or two, and then gently try lowering the rod.

4. Tapping method

Place the rod stop on a hard surface such as concrete and hold it above the stuck joint. Gently lift and hit the butt on the ground. This works best if the lower joints are stuck. Never hit the tip against the ground, as it is very likely to break it.

5. The Partner Twist

Have a friend hold one side of the joint while you hold the other and twist. I recommend that you use a friend you trust and give him the thicker end to hold. It may not be very good for the relationship if something breaks.

6. The “Lost All Hope” Method

Go to our website and buy another rod, they are not very expensive. Take better care of your fishing gear in the future! You can always keep the stuck one as a spare or give it to a neighborhood kid (tell them you’ll buy it for a buck if they fix it)
