No more reading about weight loss

I had searched the internet for more than 4 hours. I was looking for some easy weight loss tips, but trust me; I didn’t find anything except spam. The same junk content is repeated over and over again.

I’m sick of that repetition.

Finally, I decided that I would never read a single article on weight loss.

No more reading about weight loss!

What good is all that reading? Not all of those informative weight loss articles can help me achieve my goals. It was enough. I thought that he should accept me as I was.

I gave up!

It was my experience when I was trying to lose my first five pounds. Nothing was working for me and I gave up.

Teaching grammar: implicit or explicit?

Based on my 15 years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), the statement “grammar instruction should be implicit, not explicit” could be argued both for and against. Whether teaching grammar as an approach drawn from ELT (English Language Teaching) or more passively as an inductive and comprehensive topic has been the subject of countless debates by institutions, teachers, grammarians, and language researchers for decades. Grammar is the branch of linguistics that deals with the form and structure of words or morphology and their interrelation in sentences, called syntax. The study of grammar reveals how the language works, an important aspect of both acquiring and learning English.

In the early 1900s, grammarians such as the German-American anthropologist Franz Boas and the Danish linguist Otto Jespersen began to describe languages, and Boas’s work formed the basis for various types of study of American descriptive grammar. Jespersen’s work was the forerunner of current approaches to linguistic theory such as Noam Chomsky’s Transformational Generative Grammar.

Chomsky, who studied structural linguistics, sought to analyze the syntax of English in a structural grammar. This led him to see grammar as a theory of the structure of language rather than a description of actual sentences. His idea of ​​grammar is that it is a device for producing structure, not of a particular language, but of the ability to produce and understand sentences in each and every language. Since grammar is the means by which we can understand how a language “works”, a definitive study of the grammar of the language is essential to the study of the language.

However, strictly explicit grammar study, and even grammar-focused lessons, are often not communication-based. Therefore, they can be boring, cumbersome and difficult for students to assimilate. Strict grammar / structure teaching, except with students of the Logical – Mathematical or Verbal – Linguistic multiple intelligences, can be frustrating and highly ineffective.

Teaching grammar must be implicit

In the early 20th century, Jespersen, like Boas, believed that grammar should be studied by examining living speech rather than by analyzing written documents. By providing grammar in context, implicitly, we can expose students to substantial doses of grammar study without alienating them from learning English or another foreign language. I also agree with this implicit approach to teaching grammar. The main way I accomplish this is by teaching short grammar-based sessions immediately followed by additional function-based lessons where the new grammar / structure is applied in context.

The hypothesis is that adult language learners have two different ways of developing skills and knowledge in a second language, acquisition and learning. Acquiring a language is “learning” it, that is, developing language skills by using it in natural communicative situations. Language learning differs in that it is “knowing the rules” and having a conscious knowledge of grammar / structure. Language is acquired by adults, although generally not as easily or as well as children. However, acquisition is the most important means of acquiring language skills. A person’s first language (L1) is learned primarily in this way. This way of developing language skills typically employs the teaching and learning of implicit grammar.

Teaching grammar must be explicit

However, this does not completely preclude the explicit teaching of grammar. Some basic features of the grammatical structure of the English language are illogical or different from those of speakers of other languages ​​and do not easily lend themselves to being well understood, even in context. In cases where the characteristics of English grammar are diametrically opposite or in some other way radically different from the student’s L1 form of expression, explicit teaching may be necessary.

Aspects of English language grammar that may offer an exceptional challenge to learners of English as a foreign language include the use of word order, determiners (this, that, these, those, a, an, the), prepositions ( en, on, en, por, para, de, de), auxiliaries (to do, to be, to have), conjunctions (but, thus, however, therefore, although, although), interrogatives, intensifiers (some, any, few, more, too) and distinctions between modal verbs (can, could, should, should, can, could, must). Phrasal verbs also present considerable difficulty for Spanish speakers learning communicative English.

Some students are also linguistically prejudiced or logical thinkers who respond well to structured presentation of new material. Students of logical-mathematical and verbal-linguistic intelligence are prime examples of those who would respond well to explicit teaching of grammar in many cases.

Based on my English language teaching and my experience of learning a second and third foreign language (L2, L3), a unique approach using implicit or explicit methodologies is not as effective as using one or the other of these approaches as needed . Although it is essential to teach elements of language and develop communication skills in our students, there is no better way to introduce and practice them. Young learners have a more natural facility for acquisition, while adults can benefit substantially from more “formal” language learning. Learning styles and intelligence strengths are also an important factor.

There are many generally accepted ways of presenting the sounds, structure, and vocabulary of English, including colloquial forms of conversation and the four basic communication skills. The grammar foresees the “communicative economy”. Teaching grammar should be implicit or explicit, as teaching / learning conditions may require that you help to minimize the response of students that teachers fear most: “Teacher, I don’t understand.”

Losing those pandemic pounds

This is really embarrassing. But I am sure I am not alone.

Somehow I had the guts to step on the scale last month and found that I had gained 23 pounds during the pandemic.

Is this what they mean by middle-aged spread? I felt like a slug. Deep sigh. It was like that humorous poem, “When what to my astonished eyes should appear, but 20 pounds more on hips, thighs and butt.”

This fact is especially difficult to share since I wrote a book called “Ten Secrets to Losing Weight After 50”.

How did this happen to me?

Several years ago, after caring for my mom who had Lewy body dementia, I put on a lot of pounds. I was horrified to weigh 172 after his death. The heaviest thing in my life so far. So, I did a lot of research and experiment, I lost 15 pounds, although it is true that it is snot to lose weight as you get older, then I shared how I did it in this book. I even managed to keep the weight off … until the pandemic.

I broke the 5-pound rule that I shared in my book: If I gain 5 pounds, it’s time to lose 5 pounds. Everyone else ate in stress, indulged themselves, and drank wine. Why not me? We all had to comfort each other in some way, right? After the pandemic ended, I would lose weight again, I reasoned. After all, he knew how to do it.

Well, the problem with that kind of thinking is that COVID stayed a lot longer than planned. At first, I told myself that on January 1 I would start to lose weight. Surely 2021 will be a better year with less stress. Then one day, I was sitting in front of a mirror on a full-length closet door and I was taken aback by my reflection. I took a photo, gritted my teeth, and decided to face the music on the scale.

I tipped the scale at 180 pounds. Unfortunately, I had broken my previous record. My BMI is 29 and 30 is considered obese. I was on the cusp. At the rate he was going, he would easily accomplish that feat early in the year.

The severity of obesity during a pandemic

He couldn’t let that happen. After all, this is not the time to become obese. Southern California, where I live, is the current epicenter of COVID as we approach 2021. According to the CDC, obesity increases the risk of serious illness from the coronavirus and can triple the risk of hospitalization. Simply put, as BMI increases, the risk of death from COVID-19 increases.

Yes, a vaccine is just around the corner, but there is more bad news: Studies have shown that obesity may be linked to lower responses to vaccines. Oh!

So yeah, I hated my looks, but that’s not my main motivation for losing weight. I want to reduce my risks of becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID. Also, I just turned 60 a few months ago. I want to stay healthy and strong so I can travel again when this is all over, play with my grandchildren, and live longer.

There is no time like the present

No more procrastination. Last month, I began my journey to a healthier self. I wanted to be responsible, so I bravely posted my weight on my author’s Facebook page and declared that I was going to start following my own advice in my book. It was very scary to make this announcement in case it failed, but it was time to be honest with myself and with others.

A few weeks later, my husband posted a photo of me on a hike. By then I had lost some weight, but it still seemed a bit heavy. Normally, I would have scolded him for posting this photo. Since I gained weight, embarrassed, I only allowed headshots. But you know what? I own it! I let go of Facebook approvals.

I reread the chapter in my book on attitude change (like thinking that losing weight is impossible when you’re older and lamenting that methods that worked when you were younger no longer worked). I reviewed my tips on how to overcome slower metabolism and muscle loss, manage stress eating, avoid starvation, and ways to overcome stubborn stagnations.

Pretty good stuff, now I just had to follow my own suggestions.

Choosing the right diet

So, I started my journey and the weight started to lose. I didn’t cut out all carbs, ate grapefruit, ate at certain times of the day, used specific supplements, or ate raw foods. There were no dangerous surgeries, diet pills, expensive weight loss programs, expensive supplements, expensive gym membership fees, or personal trainers involved. And not starve or follow crazy fad diets that are not only unhealthy but don’t work in the long run.

You don’t have to do any of that to lose weight. Stay away from all those fad diets that your friends are excited about working temporarily but are unsustainable. As we age, it is important that health, not rapid weight loss, is a priority. Experts warn that rapid weight loss can lead to malnutrition and loss of lean muscle mass. Fad diets can also cause digestive difficulties; for example, many of the high-protein fad diets can cause severe constipation. On top of that, you are more likely to regain the weight. Who needs all that?

Remember, you are older and wiser. Your goals are different now. You’re not losing weight to look good in a bikini this summer or to slip into a pair of skinny jeans for the weekend. You want to lose weight so you can live longer and stay healthy and strong.

There is a lot of confusion about choosing the right diet. You’ll want to use a plan that is nutritionally balanced with no banned foods and is easy to follow, allows for occasional indulgences, and provides permanent healthy lifestyle changes.

While writing my book, I tried some of the top recommended diets on the US News World Report’s “Best Overall Diets” List, including the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet, and Weight Watchers (by the way, the popular Keto, Paleo, Atkins and raw food diets ranked as some of the worst on his list.) I shared the pros and cons of the best diets, their requirements, and my personal thoughts based on my own experience.

Weight Watchers, which is ranked number one on the best weight loss diets, worked best for me during that time, so that’s the plan I’m currently using. However, we are all different, so you will need to find what works best for you. If you want to try any of the other healthy diets listed, you can find cheap used copies of books describing the diets along with recipes on Amazon.

So here I am a month later and thank goodness my advice still works like magic! How much weight have I lost? I weigh 169 pounds, so I lost 11 pounds in four weeks. I’m off to a good start and I’m determined to stay with it for the long haul!

I already feel much better physically, mentally and emotionally. During the pandemic, when so much is out of our control, it is comforting to regain control of my eating.

Establishment of mini-deadlines

Experts tend to agree, if you need to lose a lot of weight, setting smaller goals works better than targeting an intimidating and seemingly impossible number that seems so far into the future that you can’t imagine it.

Makes sense. Setting a goal of losing 10 pounds in six weeks is less overwhelming than setting a goal of losing 100 pounds in one year. Short-term milestones keep you focused on your success and progress rather than obsessing over how much weight you still need to lose. Meeting your mini-deadlines is encouraging and energizing.

In my case, I need to lose around 30 pounds to reach a healthy weight. My first goal was to lose 10 pounds in six weeks, which I happily accomplished. However, from past experiences, I know that the weight drops faster when you start dieting. After that, it slows down with some stages making progress difficult.

So I hope to lose a pound or two a week from now on. Some weeks you may not lose anything, you may even gain a pound or two. It’s fine. Keep in mind that when you are over 50, your metabolism slows down and you lose muscle mass. That means losing weight is more challenging and will likely take longer. But it is certainly not impossible! And it is worth the effort.

So from here on, I’m going to make it my goal to lose five pounds a month, and focus on just those five pounds instead of all the weight I still need to lose.

Corrupt Investigation: Exposing the Peer Review Process

When you hear about new medical advances in the news, you will only hear about peer-reviewed research. Peer review means it passed some kind of basic quality standards. It is the gold standard of research.

But is it real gold or fool’s gold?

Medical research seems especially mystical and inspiring to the average person. The basics of medicine, which are not really difficult to understand, are deliberately shrouded in Latin terminology and other confusing jargon, making medical knowledge and theory seem out of reach for the common person.

After all, every profession should make you think that you need their services. Lawyers make the legal system so complex and confusing that the average person is completely helpless without legal assistance. Accountants help the IRS modify the tax code so that it is virtually impossible for the average person to know everything, understand everything, or follow all the changes that are constantly being made. Doctors have made it so that you cannot order medical tests or take over-the-counter medications. Name a profession and you can see the ways it perpetuates itself by disempowering the public.

What about the medical research profession?

One of the most important things to know about medical research is that it is a profession first and foremost. Researchers often earn money from both salaries and grants. The investigator’s job is to find a sponsor for your special type of research. The more research projects and publications they get, the more sponsors they will have and the higher their income. And if a researcher comes up with a patentable drug or device, there are intellectual property rights to include in the compensation package.

This means that researchers do not work for free. They are mercenaries. There can be very interesting research and, by societal standards, very important what needs to be done and what they could do. But unless, and until they are paid to do it, the work is not done.

This means that the sources of funding for research, whether they are government or private sources, determine what research is actually done. Most of the money for medical research comes from the private sector, usually pharmaceutical companies, which is why drugs dominate modern medicine. Government funding is a bit different, as it comes from agencies that are heavily pressured by drug companies and run by trained doctors and paid for by drug companies. Medicine is a public-private partnership that gives the pharmaceutical industry a power similar to that of a government over culture and its health research.

Research on non-drug alternatives is rarely done for this reason. It is also the reason why medicine claims that it knows very little about the causes of most diseases of our time. They care much more about the treatment than the cause, as the treatment is profitable for the research sponsors, while knowing the cause can lead to prevention, which translates into “non-billable” medical terminology.

Of course, this is a pretty big scam to pull off. Consider your scope. The public must pay taxes and ask for donations to pay for medical research that is used to discover drug treatments that the public will then have to pay insanely high prices to obtain, and only after paying the doctor for an office visit to obtain a prescription. And if the drug produces unpleasant side effects, it only generates more orders for more money to find newer drugs with different side effects.

Is the public getting a good deal here? How do you know that the research is scientifically valid? Where is the quality control?

Since most people have been conditioned to believe that they cannot judge medical research unless they have a Ph.D., MD, Newcastle disease, or other license, the research is evaluated by other scientists in the field. This is called peer review.

Research scientists, as with all professions, belong to a club of like-minded researchers in the same business, promoting their services and products. They belong to the same type of industries, such as universities or large multinational pharmaceutical corporations. They have the same education, which means that they all think alike. The purpose of your organization is to provide standards of practice that are supposed to ensure quality. Any research must be reviewed in some way by the fellow members of this club to ensure quality guidelines are met, before the research can be published.

However, despite this quality assurance, the fact remains that most of what is considered true today will be discarded as false in the future. “Ninety percent of what you learn in medical school will be out of date and out of date in ten years,” the dean of students told us when I started medical school. This means that most of what doctors learn is wrong. It also means that new information that will arrive in 10 years to replace and update current misconceptions and errors will also be considered out of date in another ten years. This is a powerful indictment from medical research, which appears to produce little more than temporary information.

It also means that the peer review process does not ensure the truth. It just means that current standards of practice are being followed. Currently, this allows for conflicts of interest, as most drug research is paid for by companies that produce and benefit from those same drugs. Even the research that proves the dangers of drug side effects is paid for by companies that stand to lose, big time, if their drugs are shown to be unsafe. Given that pharmaceutical companies have their results, and not selfless service to humanity, as their reason for their existence, it is extremely unwise to entrust them with researching their own products. The researchers do not take any oath of honesty or integrity. They work for whoever pays them, and they are not above manipulating the results to obtain the desired result.

This is not good science, of course. But it is science as practiced in a culture that has professionalized research in a for-profit enterprise. It is not, as people fantasize, the sacred trust necessary to help the sick and injured with selfless devotion. Medical research is about making money off newly patented drugs to replace newly off-patent ones that generic competitors are selling too cheaply.

Peer review does not stop conflict of interest. Medical journals accept conflict of interest, knowing that it is the way medical research is done. Knowing what research is coming allows these experts to get a feel for new drug developments before the public knows it, so they can change the mix of their investment portfolio for anticipated stock price adjustments.

Peer review also avoids alternative theories and ways of doing research. Any innovation threatens the status quo, and those who control the peer review process, such as Supreme Court justices, can decide which cases to hear and which to ignore. They are the guardians of the status quo, which maintains the current powers that are in power. Since peer review boards are the culture’s final authority on quality, there is no way to challenge their decisions. In fact, the quality of the research can be poor, which is evident when you look at how many research articles criticize other peer-reviewed research as flawed in some way. Any researcher will tell you that a lot of bad research gets published. However, it is a world of publish or perish. Yes! Who doesn’t love classic homemade chocolate chip cookies? Well these classic cookies are low in sugar and gluten free. They only have about 7 grams of concentrated carbohydrates! See below how to do it.

Ingredients:

13 oz almond flour

1/2 cup erythritol sweetener (you can use splenda)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

1 egg

1 stick of salted butter

1 spoon of vanilla

1/2 cup unsweetened chocolate chips (any brand is fine)

1/8 cup of water

Addresses:

Soften the butter, mix 1 egg, water, vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the almond flour, salt, baking soda, and erythritol. Add the wet ingredients to dry, then add the chocolate chips. Place a small scoop on parchment paper lined baking sheets (so cookies don’t stick).

Bake at 350 degrees in the oven for 10-12 minutes. Enjoy!

I do it with an almond crust, but it can also be made with other types of flours to fit your weight loss plan (talk to your health advisor). Nia’s Sugar Free and Gluten Free Cheesecake is one of our team’s favorites and is often made over the holidays or other special occasions.

Ingredients:

• 3 packages (1 and 1/2 pounds) cream cheese (room temperature)

• 4 eggs (room temperature)

• 1 and 1/2 teaspoon (1/2 tablespoon) vanilla

• 1 and 1/2 teaspoon (1/2 tablespoon) lemon juice

• 1 1/3 cup sugar equivalent to an artificial sweetener (I personally like liquid sweetener for its mildness)

• 1/4 cup sour cream

Cortex:

• 1 cup of almond flour

• 2 tablespoons melted butter

• 2 tablespoons of sugar equivalent in artificial sweetener

preparation:

Heat oven to 375 F.

Make the crust: combine the ingredients for the crust and press into the bottom of a removable pan

Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, until perfumed and starting to brown. (Set aside)

Increase the oven heat to 400 F, or lower to 350 F if you are using a water bath (see below).

Make the cheesecake: Put the cream cheese in a bowl and beat until fluffy. Add the other ingredients, scraping the bowl and mixers each time (this is key), and fully incorporating each ingredient. When all the ingredients are combined to mix on top of the cooked crust in the pan.

Instructions for using a water bath: Wrap the bottom and sides of the detachable pan in aluminum foil, place in a baking pan, and pour boiling water down the sides. Bake at 350 F for 60 to 90 minutes, checking frequently. When the cake is firm to the touch but slightly soft in the center, or the center reaches 155 F, remove from the oven.

Waterless Bath Instructions: For this method, start the cake at a high temperature and slowly fall.

St Boniface – Brief history of the survival of a large rural church in rural Kansas

St Boniface Church and Cemetery is located in Scipio, KS, a small hamlet between the cities of Richmond and Garnett, and two miles east of Highway 59. This Catholic church with its 160 ‘copper steeple and stained glass windows is exceptionally large for a country church, and also has an equal-length ‘L’ rear wing that is currently a combined rectory and retreat. At one time this two-story limestone wing was a monastery for 25 Carmelite friars, who built the current limestone church, and subsistence farming / cultivating up to 600 acres around it.

Original church

In the mid-1850s, a handful of Jesuit missionaries served Native Americans in eastern Kansas. And then, against the wishes of these missionaries, these natives were moved further south. Around the same time, numerous immigrants were occupying agricultural lands in the Scipio region, most of them German Catholics.

Because Scipio’s group wanted their own church, two prominent members of this community convinced the Bishop of Leavenworth to have his own priest. Instead, they got a visiting missionary once a month. However, because their unannounced visits did not work out well, they again prevailed over the bishop, who paid them a visit. After seeing the nearly 40 dedicated faith and media families living there, he assigned them a permanent priest.

The community then built their new resident priest a small house and log church on 20 acres of donated land. It was dedicated in the spring of 1859. St Boniface would be the only Catholic church in Anderson County for 25 years. However, this situation would change over time as the surrounding big picture developed.

Get over it

In 1865, Saint Boniface was handed over to the Carmelite Order, a large order of friars with German roots. This Order gave the parish a huge boost in membership. In 1869, the railroad approached. By the 1870s, the parish had outgrown its log church, which was also damaged by a prairie fire. With more families in the parish now, plans began for a new church on the top of the hill, to the west of the log.

In 1873, his chief friar ordered the construction of a log-framed Carmelite monastery that would also serve as Mt Carmel College parallel to what would later become the present-day church. For a time, church services would take place in this framework monastery, while the new church was being built.

Eventually, this future building layout would give the entire facility a large west-facing ‘U’ shape when ready. Construction continued with a one-room parochial school, community room, and Ursuline Sisters house north of the proposed church. Meanwhile, friars and laymen with masonry skills carved and stacked their own limestone blocks for the projected church built in 1881. Its foundation stone was laid in 1882.

By then, the Carmelites had increased their holdings to 600 acres. The brothers cultivated / cultivated it, which included a 10-acre vineyard and winery. They also built a massive rectangular red barn and sheds for dairy cows, cattle, hay, grain storage, and equipment. They certainly had a smokehouse and places to cut, can and wash clothes.

Times changed

Because the municipality surrounding Scipio is on a rural highway between highways 59 and 169, it was never incorporated. Today only a few houses remain. Other Catholic churches sprang up in the nearby cities of Richmond, Garnett, and Greeley, all three on busy roads that emerged over time.

The frame of the university closed and was finally demolished. The parochial school also closed. So did the nearby railroad, which was later converted to a 51-mile railroad. Several Ursuline friars and sisters / teachers went to other places. Agriculture stopped. The land was rented for a time, but was eventually sold. A storm destroyed the large Carmelite barn and the population of the nearby towns increased.

Today

St Boniface still has around 60 active families in its parish today. Their services for Easter and Christmas have assistance only standing up. His university building area turns into a meditation garden with a fountain. His limestone monastery has been adapted into a rectory and modern three-unit retreat for priests and others in need of silent healing. Is named Elijah’s Rest.

Two friars live in the rectory, where they serve the church. The historic cemetery is still in use and stands where the original log church stood. Tourists visit this church and its well-kept cemetery. Its doors are always open. For detailed information on this church, see the brochure below.
