Top 10 Spring Bass Fishing Tips

I see the new lures and the advertising for new equipment, and I need to get some. Looking at all the new fishing lures and equipment, I have to get it. Despite the fact that I bought several things last year, I have never used them. If you’re a Bass angler, you know exactly what I mean.

The beginning of the Bassin season may be the best time of the year to catch large bass. They have eaten little during the winter because the cold water slows down their metabolism and now that the water is getting warmer; they are hungry and ready to eat.

The biggest bass I’ve ever caught was on an opening day of the season, in about 6 feet of water, near flooded trees. I was using an original black and gold Rapala that writhed on the surface near the trees. I tossed it and let it rest near a tree. I saw the wake coming through the water from about 10 feet away. He hit so hard that his entire body came out of the water. Six pounds 4 ounces. It was incredible

Preparing to spawn.

1. Many baits work well early in the season because most bass will stay in shallow water most of the day where the water is warmer. 3. However, do not go through the flats with a sandy bottom. There is a lake where I fish regularly, which I love to get to before the sun rises. There is an area on the northeast side of the lake, about 10 acres of flat sand, about 3 to 6 feet deep. I can’t even count the number of bass I’ve caught in this area, casting a medium scuba crankbait and bouncing it along the sandy bottom. Bass love to cruise the sandy flats at dawn, they are aggressive and love to bite.

4. Be silent. When you’re fishing in shallow water, the noise you make travels a long way through the water and is amplified considerably above what you hear. I have a big radio with a CD player on my boat, I never have it on when I’m fishing. Can you imagine how that sounds to fish?

I recommend you even turn off the engine before you get to your spot and use the trolling motor to get closer. I think it’s even better if you put the trolling motor at a very low speed and let it run while you’re in shallow water, so it makes a low, constant sound. If you have it at high speed and keep hitting it, it can scare off the fish as well.

Keep things quiet and move as little as possible when you’re in shallow water, especially if you’re in an aluminum boat. Just think that any noise you make is amplified through your helmet and through the water.

5. When you are in shallow water, look for any structure you can see. A line of brush forms, trees in the water, boat lifts, rocks, etc. Never go over a pier without fishing it from the front to the shore. If you’ve ever fished off a pier, you know that small sunfish, crappies, and other small fish like to hang out on the piers. What do sea bass like to eat? Smaller fish. The Bass knows that the food will be there, so they go there to eat.

Any weeds like sedges that stick out of the water and grow on the sand flats can be amazing at the right time. There is a lake where my brother and I have fished a lot. There is a reed bed in about 5 feet of water on a sandy flat that we had fished before and fished.

One day in a light rain in early June we went to this reed bed and over the course of the next 5 hours we caught over 80 largemouth bass in the 2 to 4 pound range, not very big but a good size and fun to catch in Minnesota. We trap them all in bright purple weightless plastic worms from Texas. It was the single most phenomenal fishing experience I have ever had. We finally gave up because we were tired of fishing. We have caught many more Bass from those reed beds, but never anything like that day.

6. Cast longer. When you’re in shallow water, and especially if it’s clear, you’ll want to cast longer so you don’t spook the fish. If you’re fishing on flat sand, you can switch to a rod with a lighter line, because you don’t have to worry about the fish getting caught in the weeds. The lighter line will allow you to cast farther and use the smaller baits if necessary.

7. Wear polarized sunglasses. You will be surprised at how much better you can see through the glare on the surface of the water and see the fish if the water is relatively clear. Seeing fish always excites you. I’ve never tried one of the underwater cameras, but that’s why they’ve become popular. It motivates you if you see the fish. The cameras look great, but I think I would spend more time looking at the screen than fishing, so it wouldn’t help me catch more fish.

8. Test all your lures. Sometimes any lure will work in the spring. Start with the lures that can cover the most water the fastest. If you are fishing on a sandbar that is open, start with a crankbait. If you are fishing on kelp line or other structure and the water is rough, start with a spinnerbait or chatterbait. If you are out when the sun is up, definitely try a topwater that you can throw near the deck and entice them to bite. If faster fishing lures don’t work, switch to jigs or worms. Every obvious structure. I start with a spinnerbait and then go to a tube jig or plastic worm before moving on. If you find a lure that works, use it until it stops working. Fish can change what they want multiple times during the same day, so don’t get hung up on just one lure. Try different lures and you will catch Bass.

9. Go for smaller lures. If you just can’t find anything that is working. Go for a smaller bait and something that can be fished more slowly. A smaller crappie-sized spinnerbait or smaller tube jig, or 4-inch plastic worms may be just the ticket for finicky bedding or post-spawning bass.

10. Go bass fishing. If you live in Minnesota like me and you are a bass fisherman, you are part of a smaller group of anglers. Most anglers in Minnesota fish for walleye and panfish. There is nothing wrong with Walleye or Panfish or Pike. I fish for panfish whenever I want a great fish to eat, nothing beats crappie and lightly breaded, butter-fried sunfish fillets.

One thing you may not know if you don’t fish for bass is that you catch a lot of pike when you fish for bass. I catch my fair share of Walleyes while fishing for Bass. Fishing kelp lines at the edges of deeper water is a good place to catch good size walleye to eat, and they will catch spinnerbaits and crankbaits quite easily. My point is to go bass fishing and you’ll be hooked, especially if you’re like me and hate to stand still and stare at a cork.

Xbox Indie Reviews: Stick ‘Em Up 2

Thepwnboss and I decided to team up for our epic game of Stick ‘Em Up 2: Paper Adventures. Along the way we meet terrorists, pirates, ninjas and a whole shower of shooting stars. With our various weapons and vehicles we conquered everything that opposed us.

So what is Stick ‘Em Up?, you ask. Stick ‘Em Up is a platform game where you play as stick figures. I’ve only played the trial version of the first one now, so I don’t have a full experience of the entire series. The second greatly improves the graphics of the first (which were really just stick figures) and turns everything into a paper form. The game now looks beautiful. With multiple landscapes to battle through, Stick ‘Em Up stays fresh to the very end. The game can be played with up to four players locally (although this time it was just me and the pwnboss). It also features some sort of deathmatch mode for up to four players.

Again, I will say that Stick ‘Em Up 2 looks amazing. It’s a beautifully designed world and a joy to play. The soundtrack is well done and goes along with the atmosphere. The game itself is solid and the controls work well. Right trigger to fire and left trigger to jump allow you to aim well and efficiently. There is also a lot of diversity with all the unique areas and weapons given to you at each level. Running across the moon is something you don’t do every day, any more than fighting pirates or throwing shurikens in feudal Japan. Not to mention, you can do all of this with three other people.

Unfortunately the game is short, very short. The game features six levels, all of which can be completed in around three minutes or less. In those six levels there is almost too much variety. The first level, which is also the tutorial and test level, features an assault rifle and a rocket launcher. This is the only modern level in the game, after that you’ll never see your rifle again and the only time you’ll get another rocket launcher is for shooting shooting stars. Sure deflecting bullets with your sword is fun, but it’s also fun to carry guns. There are challenges to complete that can give a bit more replay value along with some difficulty modes. From my playthrough to testing the first game, I saw that there were bonus effects that you could activate after finding secrets. I have not found anything similar in the second. The one on one I had with Thepwnboss wasn’t anything special either, but it’s there if you’re interested.

This game has just enough quality and polish to be an Xbox Live arcade title. I just think it’s too short. The game sells for 240 microsoft points ($3). I read that they may add more content to the game later. This would make the game a much more worthwhile purchase.

Until then, Stick ‘Em Up 2 gets 3/4.

Autumn in Kinsale, Co Cork, Ireland

Have you ever been to Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland? If so, you know it’s a medieval fishing village, but also a yachting community that straddles Irish small-town rural village life and an international cosmopolitan vibe. Kinsale enjoys the best of many worlds. Our population ranges from perhaps 3,000 in the dead of winter, when most people have fled to warmer climates, to 10,000 or more in the height of summer, when everyone is in residence and all the tourists have dwindled.

This article is not about the hustle and bustle of an active resort town, but rather about the joys and delights in a quick “walk” through the city center that is only available in the fall here. Since its autumn, or autumn, the Irish will say, life is moving a little more slowly than in the summer. You’ll hear the locals catch up and always talk about the weather. If you just start every conversation with a comment about whether it’s a nice day or a rainy day, you’ll fit right in. Looking down on the map of Kinsale town center you will see a small square surrounded by shops. Surrounding that would be five other business streets with three or four long driveways, each leading into this tangle. It is the outer streets, running through the city and out at the quay, that comprise the busiest section of the city. Built in medieval times, with narrow streets, this half-mile square contains a myriad of enchanting and fantastic Irish experiences. This article will take you through some of my favorites. The walk begins in a corner, going down to the town, in the church of St. Multose, erected in 1190, which is currently decorated after the end of the Harvest Service. Harvest is a big season in Ireland, a surprise to our American visitors, who couple the celebration with Thanksgiving. A quick stop at the church reveals beautiful stained glass windows and a peaceful place to contemplate ancient history while blending in with the modern world. Continue through the gate taking a right and heading towards the center of town. Turning around, you pass Tap Tavern, which should be a stop for you later that night. There is no pub in Kinsale as quaint as “The Tap”. A hangout for the local acting types, it has several small rooms where you can find a place to chat with your friends or, if you fancy mixing with the locals, grab a seat at the bar. The Ghost Tour starts from here, so you’re likely to see all sorts of believable and not-so-believable characters.

Enjoy walking down the street as you meander toward downtown, with its art galleries, restaurants, and shops, but be sure to stop at Eileen Murphy’s Paint Shop. The sign above the door says Murphy’s and you’ll know from the window on the right that they sell paint, but the left side of the store is packed with an amazing assortment of homewares and gifts. Since it’s fall, the windows have stained glass lamps and other cozy homey items, designed to make us think of cozy evenings by a campfire. Looking around the store, notice that it doubles as both a delivery location and a Kinsale news hub. Eileen does the town a great service by offering to keep something from one person so someone else can stop by and get it later in the day. And of course with each installment we get to hear the latest news about things like Kinsale standing up with the Tiny Town Campaign this year.

There are many fantastic places to shop for gifts in Kinsale, each with their own reasons for being so charming. The other two I recommend to most would-be Hamish Hawken’s and the Perryville House gift shop. The owner of Hamish Hawkens has a practical eye and at the same time everything has an unusual style that makes it seem “one of a kind” when you bring it home. Perryville House has the best Irish pottery and always lovely housewares. But like I said, shopping is such an individual experience in Kinsale which has dozens of shops each with their own unique style. You will surely find several that you will love. Finally, when it’s time to stop and rest your feet, you’re also spoiled for choice. If you want to have a coffee or lunch I would recommend Cucina’s upscale nouvelle cuisine or Salvi’s which is quiet and open to moms with strollers. If the weather is nice, there are a couple of restaurants with outdoor tables where you can sit and enjoy the bustle of the city.

Dinner, however, is where Kinsale shines. Known as the culinary capital of Ireland, there are dozens of excellent restaurants, some ethnic, some traditional Irish and some just fantastic gourmet food. My favorite of the latter variety is Max’s Wine Bar, where they serve up perfect proportions of flavorful delights from a menu crafted from what was fresh that day, all enhanced with fantastic wines. Fishy Fishy is happy and reliable, and definitely the restaurant in town that gets the most attention. Located just behind the dock road rose garden, don’t be surprised if in a busy season you may have a short line waiting to get in. The Blue Haven serves delicious food and can accommodate travelers at times when other restaurants may be closed or full. Just the other night when we were there we were enjoying traditional Irish music while eating in the bar.

Wherever you go in Kinsale, whether you stay here for one night in a B&B or hotel, or for several nights in self-catering accommodation, you’ll find our town friendly, interesting and charming. You only have to browse the Kinsale net to see that many people have great memories of their time here. But in my heart, there is no better time than fall.

In the times we live in today many people are looking for alternative ways to save their money. As inflation and debt levels continue to rise while wages remain stagnant, it becomes increasingly difficult for people to grow their savings.

In the book, “The Richest Man in Babylon”, Arkad was widely known for his great wealth. The story suggests that he had a working theory of, “Apart from anything you earn, it’s yours to keep. It shouldn’t be less than a tenth, no matter how little you earn…pay yourself first.”

Unfortunately, most of society has strayed from this thinking.

The fact is that Canadians are not saving like they used to and collectively have record levels of debt. The average household savings rate in Canada fell from about 20 percent in the 1980s to 5.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016.[i] Many people think they can’t save because after “all their bills” are paid, they don’t have much left. However, understand that in most cases, if you try to save after paying all your bills, this strategy may be useless. Instead, get in the habit of saving first or consider paying yourself first. Once you’ve developed this habit, you can look at which vehicle you want to save your money on.

Generally speaking, when people DO consider saving many times the traditional approach is taken; Open a bank savings account and put as much cash into it as possible. Sit on it like a goose sits on its eggs and wait for your savings to hatch. However, the sad reality for most is to take a future cash withdrawal only to be able to buy less with your savings because inflation has consumed you. And you will always be on the losing end of a bank savings account because interest rates are no higher than inflation.

Another option that many consider is putting money into the stock market, however, one should not look at the stock market as a savings vehicle because the stock market has had a history of declines dating back as far as 1929.[ii]

Look up the definition of saving in Webster’s dictionary and see “preservation from danger or destruction,” while the definition of investment reads “to pledge (money) for a financial return.” Neither method is good or bad, but you must understand which one you are trying to do.

Finally, during my research, I have found throughout history that when people lose faith in their national currency, the banking system that controls it, and their governments, many run back to gold. Gold is the oldest form of money and has proven to be a safe haven for centuries. Gold cannot be printed, degraded, or inflated. Simply put, gold is financial insurance.

To better understand this concept, it is important to start investing in your own education. Financial education should be taught in our school system, however sadly it is not.
