Amazon, king of disruptors

AN INTRODUCTION
When it comes to disruptive technology, there is one company that reigns supreme. Amazon ($ AMZN). Amazon and its pioneering founder and CEO Jeff Bezos are responsible for disrupting more industries than I can count on my hands, and they keep going. In this article, I’m going to explain what makes Amazon such an efficient machine and the many industries that have been affected.

FIRST BLOOD
When was the last time you walked into a Barnes & Noble ($ BKS)? Or any other bookstore for that matter? How about the last time you visited the Amazon website? I’m willing to bet that almost everyone reading this has been to the Amazon website in the last few days, and I’m equally willing to bet that hardly anyone has walked into a physical bookstore in quite some time. The bookstore industry, symbolized by former giant Barnes & Noble, was the first victim of Amazon’s disruptive trends. Amazon’s roots go back to 1994 when the company founded an online bookstore. By designing itself as an online bookstore, Amazon was able to offer a much broader selection than any physical bookstore, as well as being able to offer the same selection at a lower cost to the consumer. As the free market normally behaves, consumers choose the cheapest option when offered an identical product or service. By 2007, Amazon had surpassed Barnes & Noble in book sales revenue, the same year they launched the first version of the Kindle e-book reader. In 2010, digital book sales exceeded physical book sales through Amazon. Amazon also runs the Audible company and website, one of the biggest players in the audiobook game. In 2011, Borders Group, which was only a few years earlier the second-largest bookstore chain in the United States, went bankrupt and ceased to exist a few months later. As of this writing, Barnes & Noble has a market capitalization of approximately $ 454 million. Amazon has a market capitalization of approximately $ 832 billion. Based on the market capitalization valuation, Amazon is worth nearly 2,000 times more than Barnes & Noble. Amazon’s entry into the bookstore industry and its replacement of previously established companies is simply the first of many industries that the Amazon bull has disrupted.

NO END IN SIGHT
After benefiting from direct retail sales and fees charged to third-party vendors on Amazon’s website, Amazon derives the largest percentage of its revenue from its Amazon Web Services (AWS) division. AWS has a history dating back to 2006. In the course of 2006, Amazon successively launched Simple Storage Service (S3), a file storage service as the name implies. Simple Queue Service (SQS), a service designed to automate message queues. And to end the year, they launched Elastic Cloud Computer (EC2), a service that allowed users to pay for server time to run programs and simulations. Today, around 100 different services are offered under the Amazon Web Services umbrella that can satisfy almost all digital needs. Today, almost half of all digital cloud computing is operated by Amazon. Similar to what happened with the bookstore industry, Amazon has taken over. By 2020, cloud computing is projected to be a more than $ 400 billion industry. And Amazon is poised to dominate this market for the foreseeable future.

CLAIM TO FAME
The grocery and retail industry is a perfect example of an industry that Amazon permanently changed and what they are best known for. To begin with, though, Walmart ($ WMT) has nearly three times Amazon’s annual revenue, so it’s not that Bezos and co have come to dominate the retail industry, but they certainly have made a dent. You could say that they have revolutionized the industry. Although they were founded in 1994, for the first four years they were just an online bookstore, but in 1998, the company expanded its catalog and began selling more than just books. Since then, the company’s online sales have grown exponentially year after year, and they have even been accused of bankrupting many traditional retailers. Amazon gets roughly 85% of its revenue from its retail business, so it’s clearly most of Amazon. By pioneering online retail, Amazon was able to establish itself as one of the biggest players in retail despite being entirely online, in part because of the convenience and lower prices. Most recently, in 2017, Amazon acquired Whole Foods, a luxury grocery store, to increase its market share in the grocery and retail scene. Through its online retail arm and physical grocery arm, Amazon is able to grab a sizable market share and keep the agency over the space. Oh, and just to put Amazon’s reach into perspective, more than two-thirds of all households have an Amazon Prime subscription.

OBJECTIVE WHAT MORE
Above I have talked about which are the biggest divisions of Amazon and why they are better known. But here I am going to talk about the lesser known parts. Amazon operates its Amazon Video service and is available to all Prime customers. This service acts as competition for television and traditional media and is popular with cable cutters, rivals other streaming services like Netflix ($ NFLX) and Hulu (soon to be owned by Disney, ($ DIS)) and offers thousands of movies and TV shows. shows. There’s Amazon Drive, which offers unlimited file storage for just $ 59.99 a year. They recently also acquired streaming website twitch, the largest video game live streaming site out there for Amazon in the streaming and e-sports industries. One of the first subsidiaries is A9, a highly advanced search engine and marketing company that operates on machine learning. Amazon also goes after autonomous vehicle companies like Tesla ($ TSLA) and Google’s Waymo ($ GOOG, $ GOOGL). Although, Tesla is not as advanced as many believe, nor as good an investment. Back to normal, they also have Amazon Music, Amazon Tickets, Amazon Home Services, Amazon Inspire, Internet Movie Database (IMDb), Amazon Go, Fire TV, Goodreads, Zappos, and many more. Go ahead and look for Amazon subsidiaries or services offered by Amazon that I haven’t talked about, you can probably find at least a few dozen more. A couple of days ago, Amazon even announced that they were acquiring an online pharmacy to offer an online pharmacy and pharmaceutical delivery service that will revolutionize traditional pharmacies.

THE CONCLUSION
Right now, Amazon is the second most valuable company in the world by market capitalization. The only company that surpasses them is the tech giant Apple ($ APPL). Based on Amazon’s enormous growth potential and lack of equivalent competition, I believe its value will continue to skyrocket. They are in a unique position to disrupt almost every industry imaginable and succeed at the same time. Amazon is a remarkable company that will continue to expand indefinitely, and I would recommend anyone to invest in the company, even though some people believe they are overvalued.

Backplates – Perfect for enhancing the appearance of your hardware

You just bought some lovely new hardware for your kitchen cabinets and are in the process of getting it installed. After installing a few knobs and drawer pulls, you find that it’s not as flashy as you’d like. Instead of getting frustrated and throwing everything back, there is a decorative way to spruce up the look of that hardware, just buy some lovely backplates for it.

Backplates really are a surefire way to fix the look of hardware you bought, it’s also a great way to improve the look of old hardware. How is it possible that I am thinking? Well, it is because of the striking materials with which they can be made and the beautiful finishes that are applied to them.

For example, you can get bronze ones that have an oil rubbed finish applied to them. Or you can get others that are made from brass that is then polished to create a shiny piece that looks like the sun. Some of the other materials it can be made from include steel, stainless steel, wrought iron, aluminum, and nickel, while other finishes include satin, burnished, brushed, and matte black. Along with the finishes, they can also feature different designs such as you can get the ones with looped scrolls and some that have distinctive patterns.

Now, there are two main things to keep in mind when shopping for backplates. One, is to make sure you get the right ones for the hardware you’re buying it for. For example, if you are buying knob ones, be sure to get ones that have only one hole for the knob screw to go through because if you buy knob ones you will be out of luck as the knob ones have two screw openings.

Along the same lines, you also need to get backplates that match the current style of your hardware and your cabinets. For example, if you have cabinets that have a modern look, you don’t want to get ones that have a traditional feel. The great thing about these accessories is that since there are so many choices of materials and finishes, there are many styles available, from modern and traditional, to others that are on the old side, and some that are very Avante gard and have an art. deco feel for them. To navigate through the different options, what you need to do is go online and do some shopping. With just a click of your mouse, you can navigate through the many options, and when you come across something you like, it is usually at the best possible prices.

When it comes down to it, back plates are simply fantastic decorative accessories and are a surefire way to enhance the look of your hardware. So if you have any hardware that just doesn’t cut into your look, just turn to these wonderful accessories to enhance your look. With all the options available, doing so is pretty easy.

Why the delay in the massive take-up of electric cars?

It’s been a few years since various electric saloons started receiving rave reviews, notably, of course, the Tesla range.

Not only were they generating good performance figures, but aspects such as their autonomy and recharge times seemed to indicate that they were practical. Therefore, no one had to think about making a trip of 500 kilometers in several stages and over several days, to allow recharges or battery changes.

Go back say 5 years and everyone was predicting that by now, we would all be deafened by the silence of our roads as everything changed to a quiet hum. The strange combustion engine car would be viewed with disgust or sympathy and we would all have clean air around us as a benefit as well.

However, it has not happened. Why is that?

Price rears his ugly head

Some of the most admired electric cars, and those that are often the most attractive in terms of range and performance, are still very expensive.

Some retail models cost around $ 100k. Even for large corporations and prestigious limo rental companies, these are prices that will make anyone blink when reading those ads.

True, there are also more modest cars. It’s great news, but then things start to get tricky in terms of battery “issues” (rented, owned, life expectancy, exchange periods), and so on. Some commentators have observed that it takes a doctorate in math to try and figure out how much the ‘bottom line’ is and when you get there it’s suddenly smaller because it doesn’t look that ‘small’ in terms of price.

Performance

For much of the mass market, performance is a secondary issue. Yes, you can drool over the Tesla-S and other brands so prestigious that they can hit 60 mph even before getting in the car, but in reality, that performance is completely irrelevant in most driving environments that are urban or suburban.

Joe’s public may be excited about the performance figures of a Ferrari, but that doesn’t mean they will (or can) buy one.

What the typical buyer wants to know in terms of an electric car’s performance is:

  • Will this vehicle tackle steep hills?

  • How will you handle stuck traffic jams in terms of power consumption?

  • What is your range before needing a recharge?

  • How long will it take to recharge?

Now surprisingly, while these questions aren’t exactly rocket science, firm numbers aren’t easy to come by from looking at many electric car ads. When you see them, things start to sound a lot like the ‘old days’ of electric vehicles.

Entire tables of data begin to appear. For example, the figures that say a car’s range before recharging is 400 km / 250 miles may not seem too impressive. They certainly sound like a less impressive loss again (almost terrifying) when little warnings are added saying things like “it may be less in winter“Many ordinary buyers will want to leave the house in bad weather knowing they will get there, not starting in a”let’s wait and see what happens“base.

Too many figures for electric vehicles are fluid on the edge of ethereal and there are too many qualifiers. Another example is recharge times, which often cite a multiplicity of options depending on what your power source is. Some seem reasonable in, say, 3 hours, but then you realize that you don’t know what the special charger is being referenced. Others sound comically unrealistic like “21 hours with a normal plug“.

Try to explain to your boss that you will be late tomorrow because your car will be charged.

Complications

A final observation related to inhibitors in the mass adoption of electric cars is that some of the advertising websites are almost incomprehensible.

The typical mass market buyer of new cars wants to see clear options that state “Model X = $”. Sure, we all understand that some things are configurable, like motor size, color scheme, etc., plus, they will all have price implications.

However, what people probably don’t want to think about is that when they go to their showroom they will need to bring a QA, engineer, statistician and accountant to interpret all the various options related to batteries, performance variables , recharge fees and so on.

Until electric vehicles become cheaper, advertising and pricing are easier to understand and, above all, their recharge rates improve, their use is likely to be limited to niche market segments.

Definition Define What is a Fat Strat – Stratocaster?

Do you have, or are you wondering what a Fat Strat is? If so, you are probably not alone and here I will try to give you a short guide on what exactly a Fat Strat is. I hope you find this helpful.

Yes, there is a Fat Strat, which is also called HSS, which means, it is an anagram of Humbucker, Single Coil, Single Coil stratocaster, as on the Fender Stratocaster guitar (as if you didn’t already know). The usual and more typical Strat has three single coil pickups. The Fat Strat has just two single coil pickups, one located at the neck and one at the middle position, and a humbucker pickup at the bridge position. Confused?

The humbuckers give what is called a fatter sound than a single coil. They have more windings which, as a direct result of this, are ‘hotter’, in other words they achieve higher or higher output. Generally speaking, the hotter the pickup, the more prominent the midrange frequencies will be, which is why they are said to have a thicker or warmer sound with less highs. Humbuckers are what you will find in guitars like the Gibson Les Paul among others.

The Fat Strat can give you more tonal options if that’s the kind of sound you’re looking for or appealing to. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for the true classic Stratocaster sound, you may want to stick with the standard assortment of three standard single coils. At the aftermarket, you can buy single coils that roll up hotter and will achieve a warmer sound for you as well. Many people will add a hotter single coil at the bridge position, which I suppose could give a somewhat similar sound, if you can call it that, an effect like humbucker.

There are also HH Strats that contain 2 humbucker pickups and no single coils. You may have heard that they are known as Double Fat Strats.

Options Trading Strategies: Misuse of Historical Volatility and Implied Volatility Crossovers

Not all volatilities are built equal. Differentiating between historical volatility and implied volatility is critical, so retail traders learn to trade options by focusing on what is important to theoretically price option spreads going forward.

Historical Volatility (HV) measures the past price movements of the underlying asset by recording the actual or realized volatility of the asset. The best known type of HV is statistical volatility, which calculates the performance of the underlying assets over a finite but adjustable number of days. Let me explain what “finite but adjustable” means. You can vary the number of days to measure statistical volatility: for example, 5-10-50-200 days, this is how time-based moving averages and momentum / oscillator studies are constructed. However, this is not the case for implied volatility.

Implied volatility measures expected values by repeatedly refining the supply and demand estimates. These estimates are based on the expectations of buyers and sellers. The buyers and sellers (more than 85% of the volume traded on the floor is driven by institutions, traders on the floor and market makers) behind the bid and ask values, who change their estimates during the day, as new information, be it macroeconomic or microeconomic news. -Economic data are available that impact the underlying product. What is being estimated is the future fluctuation of the underlying asset with certain assumptions incorporated in the changes in the information of the underlying. Such refinement of the supply and demand estimates must be completed within option expiration periods with a finite time limit. This is why there are monthly and quarterly option expiration cycles. You cannot change these expiration periods, either by shortening or lengthening the number of days, to “build” a time period that gives you faster or slower crossover indicators.

Why point out the incorrect use of the historical volatility and implied volatility crossovers? It is to warn you against faulty use of HV-IV crossovers, which is not a reliable commercial signal. Remember, for a given expiration month, there can only be volatility during that specific period. Implied volatility must start from where it is currently trading to converge to zero on the expiration date. Implied volatility (either IV for ITM, ATM or OTM strikes) should return to zero at expiration; but the price can go anywhere (go up, down or stay stable).

Continually selling “overvalued” options and buying “below price” would eventually cause the implied volatility of each non-zero bid option to line up exactly. Which means that IV’s skewed “smile” phenomenon disappears as IV becomes perfectly flat. This hardly happens, especially in very liquid products. Take, for example, the SPY, a broad-based index; o GLD – the SPDR Shares ETF in a fast market like gold. With an open interest in non-zero bid strikes running into the thousands and tens of thousands, do you really believe that a retail trader who is not on the floor will be allowed to “beat the price” of the professional hedger on the floor? Unlikely. Call and put options on highly liquid products are like high-supply inventory items because there is high demand. This type of inventory is not “mispriced” because floor traders have to earn a living on a daily basis by negotiating call and put options; they will refuse to take the risk of setting incorrect prices overnight.

So what are the key considerations for banking to your advantage as a retailer?

  • The percentage impact of IV on the extrinsic value of an option is much more important for ATM and OTM strikes, compared to ITM strikes that are loaded with intrinsic value but lack extrinsic value. Most retail options traders with an account size of $ 25- $ 50k (or less) gravitate toward ATM and OTM strikes for affordability reasons. The deeper the ITM, the wider the Bid-Ask spread becomes compared to the narrower differences of the Bid-Ask spread on ATM or OTM strikes, making ITM strikes more expensive to trade.
  • When you trade with IV, you are buying downtime for an increase in IV by one percentage point below; or, time-of-sale premium for a drop in IV by one percentage point above the theoretical price of the market value, which the participants are willing to pay or sell. Depending on the market ranges of that day, the price debit spreads will fill in at 0.10-0.15 below the theoretical price of the spread. With credit spreads, increase credit to sell the spread between 0.10 and 0.15 above the theoretical price of the spread. The price you pay next; Or, receiving above the theoretical price of a spread is your advantage, based purely on the price performance of implied volatility only. Remember, you theoretically price a spread to fill the order at its forward value, never the other way around.

Where can I learn to trade consistent profit options focused on implied volatility without historical volatility? Follow the link below, titled “Consistent Results” for a retail options trader portfolio model that excludes the use of HV and focuses on trading IV only.

I will cite these actual historical events to reinforce the case for completely removing historical volatility from your trading process.

February 27, 2007: Widespread panic over massive stock sell-off in China. If you were trading the options of an index like FXI, which is the iShares product of the 25 largest and most liquid Chinese companies in China, although they are listed in the US but are based in China, you would have been affected. While you can argue that it is possible for market events to recreate the ranges of the Dow, Nasdaq and S&P, how do you recreate the scenario in which VIX and VXN skyrocket 59% and 39%?

January 22, 2008 – The Fed cuts rates by 75 basis points before the policy meeting scheduled for January 30, causing the FOMC to cut another 50 basis points on the date of the meeting. If you were operating in interest rate sensitive sectors using the options of a financial ETF or a banking index such as the BKX; Or, the housing index like the HGX, would have been affected. And in today’s near-zero rate environment, the FOMC, while still having a rate policy tool, cannot cut rates by the same number of basis points as before. What was a historic event cannot be repeated successively in the future, not until rates are raised again and subsequently lowered again.

Question: How do you reconstruct the story? That is the history of the events that formed the Historical Volatility. The answer lies in the actual examples cited, as with any other financially related historical event: history cannot be reconstructed. You may be able to mimic parts of HV, but you can’t repeat it in its entirety. Therefore, if you continue to use HV-IV crossovers, you are visually confused looking for “mispricing” patterns of volatility that you would like to see; But instead, you’ll end up with poor earnings performance. It makes more practical business sense to focus exclusively on IV; Then diversify volatility trading across multiple asset classes beyond equities.

Where can I find out more about IV trading in multiple asset classes using only options, without owning stocks? Follow the link below (video-based course), which uses IV Mean Reversion / Mean Repulsion and IV Forecasting, as reliable methods for trading implied volatilities in broad-based stock indices, commodity ETFs, currency ETFs, and ETFs. emerging markets.

Scandinavian Christmas Delight – Pickled Pork Feet

Christmas must be near. My mom asked me to “watch out” for the pig’s feet. Why do you ask? What a silly question for someone like me who appreciates the only time of year when I enjoy this “delicacy.”

Granted, I admit that the often maligned swine treat doesn’t fall into the “delicacy” category for many, except for the hearty souls who still enjoy a bit of the “old country.” That would be Sweden and Norway for the uninformed, thank you. Unfortunately, my birthplace is Minnesota, but my gene pool can be found among the fjords. For as long as I can remember, pickled pig’s feet were an integral part of the family Christmas.

I know there are variations to the recipe with vinegar and spices, but we are purists. The ingredient label rivals the shortest on record: pig’s feet and salt. There is not much recipe here. You take pig’s feet (conveniently pre-split by the butcher) and boil them. And boil them. And boil them. Hours. You can start checking them around the 4 hour mark, but don’t expect them to be done. And what I mean by fact is, by most standards, it’s considered to be a lot like gelatin. Interestingly, the resulting cooking liquid is LOADED with gelatin, as you can see when it cools.

You would think that after a few hours, the feet should be tender. For the occasional tester, a fork easily slides off the feet, fooling the beginner into thinking it’s done. Experience has told me that this is not true. The next step proves this point.

Get yourself a kettle and make a brine solution of salt water. Without prescription. Just a lot of salt. But not too much. Or very little. You know, just the right amount. Chill, put your feet (well, not yours, but the pig’s) in a bowl or bucket and cover with the salt solution. Throw them in the fridge behind the herring and lefse. Take them out the next day and repeat the brine process, as the first batch of brine will generally have that gelatinous stickiness. Give them a try. Salty enough? Too salty? Adjust your brine solution accordingly. You know, salty enough. But not too salty. Throw it in the fridge behind the lefse, herring, and lutefisk you picked that day. The next day you are in business! You’ll discover that what you thought were soft goo balls have turned into, well, goo balls. But delicious.

I have to admit that my mother, a brother and I are the only ones who eat these wonders. The slimy mix of tendon, skin, fat, and a small bite of real meat is a godsend. My brother loves to “suck his knuckles” as he proclaims, and the inevitable finger jelly joke is pulled out of stock for the annual event (always done by a non-pig’s foot believer). I take great pleasure in sucking on a knuckle in front of the rest of the family, happy to know that I am traveling a path they dare not travel.

Mmmm … I can already taste them …!

Spider-Man PS4 2019 Review: I was never bored of playing this tutorial!

Spider-Man 2018 is an incredible action adventure game influenced by Marvel comics, developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game features Peter Parker as the main character, secretly known as Spider-Man. You can also play other characters like Mary Jane Watson and Miles Morales during the main game’s story. The best thing is that you can wander through the city that never sleeps, New York. This article will review the main game walkthrough, downloadable content, and some side missions.

Main game

The main game covers Peter Parker’s life as Spider-Man. You are a mature adult who needs to balance life between college and fighting crime. The story is simple and what intrigues me the most is that you will have the opportunity to unlock battle suits, gadgets and abilities by completing main missions and side missions. You will encounter a lot of super villains and the hardest part is when you will have to meet two villains at the same time, for example Electro and Vulture.

DLC: The City That Never Sleeps

Additional downloadable missions, which aim to eliminate Hammerhead and his goons in all three DLC series. All three DLCs will reveal Hammerhead’s true intent with the Magic group.

The robbery

The heist, as the name suggests, requires Spider-Man to be more stealthy on missions by getting close to Hammerhead’s goons. I felt the missions are easy relative to other DLC as I am used to playing stealth games like Metal Gear Solid. It’s proven in stealth capabilities here, which means equipping yourself with stealth abilities is crucial.

War for territory

Turf War, as the name suggests, requires Spider-Man to fight Hammerhead’s goons. The thugs are extremely strong, outfitted with stolen Sable battle suits. You will need to be equipped with high fighting skills and defenses from attacks like launching missiles. From this DLC onwards, I prefer to use the combination Spider Bro and Spider Drones as you are surrounded by tough enemies both on the ground and in the air.

Silver lining

Silver Lining is one of my favorites among the other two DLCs. The DLC covers most of the Spider-Man PS4 characters, especially Silver Sable. The all-out battle of Turf Wars continues as the game leads to a possible rematch against Hammerhead. Unlike in Turf Wars, the people of Hammerhead are fully equipped with Sable’s gear, making them incredibly strong to defeat.

Side missions

Taskmaster and Screwball challenges

The most popular side quests that allow you to obtain those base tokens to upgrade Spider-Man’s level, gadgets, and abilities. The missions included stealth, combat, and web balancing skills that you will need to find the right setup for Spider-Man. Personally, I find combat challenges the easiest to get to Spectacular level, while other missions tend to get repetitive by nature.

Tombstone

One of the interesting side quest stories that was initially unleashed during Demon’s investigation. Simply put, Spider-Man has to complete all the side missions to eventually take on Tombstone himself. That is the toughest boss of all the side missions.

All recordings

Collecting all the recordings was one of my favorite side missions after Tombstone. Spider-Man needs to collect all the evidence from recordings scattered around New York City. Once you have collected them all, you will witness an interesting ending in Yuri Watanabe.

The history and success of black filmmakers from Africa and the African diaspora

Indeed, it is a wonderful revelation in world cinema history that immensely talented African and African diaspora filmmakers are succeeding in innovative cinema. Not only are they challenging old movie recipes, they are also using their superior art of cinema to create and establish new visions of their people and the world. The journey of black filmmakers began as early as 1922 when Tressie Saunders, a black director, made the exemplary film ‘A Woman’s Mistake’. It was the first attempt of its kind at that time to decolonize the gaze and base the film on black female subjectivity. Yet today, even after a long history of evocative work, black female directors have had a long, slow road to the director’s chair, where only a handful of black female filmmakers have been able to break down racial barriers in Hollywood.

But apart from Hollywood, many of the black women of Africa and the United States have managed to stand out in world cinema. In fact, filmmakers like Julie Dash (originally from New York City) long ago won the award for best cinematography with their highly acclaimed film “Daughters of the Dust” at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival. On the other hand , Cheryl Denye from Liberia has received worldwide fame and recognition with her film The ‘Watermelon Woman’ (1996), which happens to be the first African-American lesbian feature film in the history of world cinema. Another female filmmaker, Safi Faye from Senegal has to her credit several ethnographic films that gave her international recognition and earned her various awards at the Berlin International Film Festivals in 1976 and 1979. In addition, there are independent black filmmakers like Salem Mekuria from Ethiopia who produces documentaries focusing on her native Ethiopia and African American women in general. In 1989, Euzhan Palcy became the first black woman to direct a mainstream Hollywood film, ‘A Dry White Season’. Despite all this success, it remains true that the situation is not so rosy for African-American filmmakers. A documentary called “Sisters in Cinema” by Yvonne Welbon has tried to explore why and how the history of black women behind the camera has become strangely dark throughout Hollywood.

“Sisters in Cinema” is the first one-of-a-kind documentary in world cinema history that attempts to explore the lives and films of inspiring black women filmmakers. To commemorate the success and colossal achievement of female film noir throughout the centuries, a 62-minute documentary by Yvonne Welbon titled “Sisters in Film” appeared in 2003. The film attempted to trace the careers of inspiring African-American filmmakers from the early 20th century to the present day. The first documentary of its kind, ‘Sisters in Cinema’ has been regarded by critics as a robust visual history of the contributions of African American women to the film industry. ‘Sisters in Cinema’, they say, has been a seminal work that pays tribute to African American women who made history against all racial and social barriers and obstacles.

During the interview, filmmaker Yvonne Welbon admitted that when she set out to make this documentary, she hardly knew there were black female filmmakers other than African-American director Julie Dash. Yet in search of those inspiring directors, he set out to explore the fringes of Hollywood, where he discovered a phenomenal film directed by an African-American woman Darnell Martin. Aside from that ‘I Like It Like That’ movie, he discovered only a handful of movies produced and distributed by African Americans. That said, Hollywood’s monopoly by white filmmakers, producers, and distributors inspired her to go down the independent film path. Surprisingly, here she discovers a wide range of truly remarkable films directed by an African American woman outside of the Hollywood studio system and thus discovered her sisters in the cinema.

Within the 62-hour documentary, the careers, lives and films of inspiring female filmmakers, such as Euzhan Palcy, Julie Dash, Darnell Martin, Dianne Houston, Neema Barnette, Cheryl Dunye, Kasi Lemmons and Maya Angelou are showcased, along with rare, in -In-depth interviews interwoven with movie clips, rare stock footage, and production photos and videos of the filmmakers at work. Together, these images give voice to African American female directors and serve to illuminate a story of the phenomenal success of black female filmmakers in world cinema that has remained hidden for far too long.

In recent times, the Eighth Annual African American Women in Film Film Festival was held in New York City in October 2005. It was another notable event that showcased exceptional feature films and documentaries, as well as short films made by African American filmmakers such as Aurora. . Sarabia, a fourth generation Chicana (Mexican American) from Stockton, CA, Vera J. Brooks, a Chicago producer, Teri Burnette, a Socialist filmmaker, Stephannia F. Cleaton, an award-winning New York City newspaper journalist, and the Staten Island Advance Business Editor, Adetoro Makinde, Director, Screenwriter, Producer, Nigerian-American first generation actress, among others. And more recently, from February 5 to March 5, 2007, the Film Society of Lincoln Center & Separate Cinema Archive celebrated Black History Month, in which the center presented “Black Women Behind the Lens.”

A seething documentary, “Black Women Behind the Lens” celebrates the uncompromising cinematic labor of love created by a group of brave African American women. Gifted with uncommon determination and a fearless spirit, these black filmmakers were committed to speaking truth to power while offering alternatives to the stereotypical images of black women found in mainstream media. They turned to guerilla cinema, an artistic rebellion against Hollywood’s long-established network, and have challenged old cinematic perceptions, using their art to erect new visions of their people, their heritage, and their world. Leading theorists, sociologists, writers and directors say it’s good to know that African women filmmakers and the African diaspora are challenging old movie recipes and creating their own visions in the cinema they love to make.

However, while significant numbers of women in Africa and here in the United States have been able to build successful careers in film, the obstacles are particularly daunting. The problem, says Elizabeth Hadley, president of Women’s Studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, is not particularly about black women making movies, but issues of marketing, distribution and financing. As a result, most of these women find money independently and work on tight budgets. However, all said and done, it is quite encouraging to know that at least some of these women dare to decolonize the Hollywood gaze and base their films on black female subjectivity. Any attention or recognition that comes when these women wish to communicate their ideas about Black history and heritage, with an emphasis on the experience of women, should be welcomed!
